- at least one pressure element (42,44,46) moving over said curing section with said chain (12) during the curing of said reaction mixture (32) in said mold elements (14).
- 2. The machine of claim 1, further comprising means for placing a second continuous sheet of substantially nonstretchable cover material (38) over said introduced reaction mixture (32) and beneath said pressure element (42, 44, 46).
- 3. The machine of claim 1 wherein said introducing means (30) comprises:
- means (30) for discharging said reaction mixture (32) onto said cover material (22) conformed within said mold elements (14); and
- means (34) for scraping excess reaction mixture (32) from the top of said mold elements (14).
- 4. The machine of claim 1, further comprising:
- a cam surface (96) on each side of said continuous chain (12) and at the beginning of said path for forcing said die elements (74) inward with said die portions (78, 80) within said transverse grooves (72) and over said cover material (22); and
- cam surfaces (100) along both sides of said continuous chain (12) and at the end of said curing section for forcing said die elements (74) out to release said cover material (22) from said groove (72).
- 5. The machine of claim 1 wherein said conforming means (28, 78, 88) comprises a second continuous chain (28) having rollers (88) driven with said mold elements (14), said first cover material (22) being introduced between said chains (12, 28) and said rollers (88) being receivable within said transverse grooves (72) to conform said cover material (22) to said grooves (72).
- 6. The machine of claim 1 further comprising:
- die elements (74, 78) forming seed recesses at both sides of each mold element (14); and
- means (32) for cutting said interconnected cured plugs (50) to form two chains of interconnected soil plugs.
- 7. The machine of claim 6 wherein said cutting means (52) further comprises means for cutting excess cover material (108) off of both sides of said cured soil plugs (50).
- 8. The machine of claim 6, further comprising means (54) for planting a seed within each seed recess.
- 9. The machine of claim 1 wherein each of said die elements (74) includes a slot (160) for receiving a portion of a plant within said groove (72) and further for holding said cover material (22) within said groove (72).
- 10. A machine for producing two separate strips (55) of interconnected soil plugs (50), said soil plugs being able to germinate seeds, comprising:
- a first continuous chain (12) having a plurality of mold elements (14), each mold element (14) having
- a body (70) defining a transverse groove (72) open on each end and
- a die element (74) pivotably connected to each end, each of said die elements (74) including a die portion (78) extendable into the end of said groove (72) for forming a seed recess (57);
- means (16) for driving said first chain (12) along a path, said path including a curing section;
- a second continuous chain (28) having a plurality of rollers (88) receivable within said grooves (72) of said mold elements (14), said second chain (28) being driven with said first chain (12) to introduce said rollers (88) into said grooves (72) at the beginning of said path;
- a first paper feed (20, 22, 24) introducing a first continuous layer of paper (22) between said first and second chains (12, 28) whereby the rollers (88) force said paper (22) into said grooves (72);
- a cam surface (96) for positioning said die elements (74) with said die portions (78) within said grooves (72) and over said paper (22);
- means (30, 34) for introducing a reaction mixture (32) into said paper (22) lined mold elements (14);
- a second paper feed (36, 38) introducing a second continuous layer of paper (38) over said reaction mixture (32) within said mold elements (14);
- a continuous pressure curing belt (42, 44, 46) positioned on said second paper layer (38) and biased against said first chain (12), said curing belt (42, 44, 46) being driven together with said first chain (12) to prevent slipping between said second paper layer (38) and said curing belt (42, 44, 46);
- means (52) for longitudinally cutting said cured strip (55) so as to form two separate strips, each having seed recesses on one side, said cutting means (52) further comprising means for trimming excess paper (108) from each side of said strip; and
- means (54) for depositing a seed within each of said soil recesses.
