Claims
- 1. A process of performing repetitive work operations on a multi-layered plastic web comprising:
- (a) forming lines of weakness in the web to delineate a series of interconnected commodities;
- (b) applying position locating indicia to an external surface of one layer of the web at spaced positions with at least one such indicia being applied to each commodity, the positions being selected to repetitively produce consistent spatial relationships between each such indicia and a web location where a work operation is to be performed;
- (c) the indicia applying step including the substep of incorporation into each indicia transparent electromagnetic wave shifting material which when stimulated emits energy in a wavelength shifted range of an intensity relatively greater than the intensity but in the same wavelength range as the electromagnetic energy ambient to the web;
- (d) directing electromagnetic energy to the indicia to cause the indicia successively to effect a wavelength shift and emit a relatively high intensity electromagnetic energy signal in said range;
- (e) detecting the successive indicia signals with a detector while discriminating them from any ambient light reflections of like wavelength which are present; and
- (f) separating a commodity from the web in response to said signal detections.
- 2. The process of claim 1 including the step of applying multi-colored printing to the web and thereafter applying said position indicia over the multicolored printing.
- 3. A method of manufacture of a multi-layered plastic web for separation into a set of like commodities comprising:
- (a) coating at least portions of one face of the web to modify its appearance and provide a repetitive pattern;
- (b) applying registration enabling indicia to the web in a repetitive pattern repeating one for each repetition of the coating, the indicia being transparent and of a material which fluoresces when stimulated by radiation in a first range of energy by emitting electromagnetic radiation in a second energy range having an intensity different than that reflected by the remainder of web and the coating in the second energy range;
- (c) forming lines of weakness in the web with one such line between each adjacent pair of repetitive patterns to delineate the commodities;
- (d) moving the web along a path;
- (e) irradiating the web with indicia stimulating radiation of an intensity greater than the intensity of light ambient to the web and in said first energy range as it is moved along the path to cause the indicia to emit radiation in the second range;
- (f) detecting such indicia emitted radiation as one of the indicium passes a detection location by intensity discrimination of the indicia emitted radiation from any reflected ambient light in the second range and wavelength discrimination from the indicia stimulating radiation; and
- (g) separating a commodity from the web in response to detection of said one indicium passing such location.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the first given range is in the infrared portion of the spectrum.
- 5. The method of claim 3 wherein the first given range is in the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum.
- 6. The method of claim 3 wherein the wavelength discrimination comprises filtering energy so the detector sees energy in the second but substantially no reflected energy in the first given range.
- 7. The method of claim 3 wherein said path is illuminated by ambient light including electromagnetic energy in both the first and the second energy ranges and the ambient light is in an environment where humans are present.
- 8. The process of claim 3 wherein the web is a polyolefin and the indicia are formed by a material which will not migrate through the web.
