A firearm comprising a gun barrel for accommodating a desired round of ammunition having a bullet, a shell casing and a primer, a chamber of the gun barrel having a firing pin associated therewith which is activated by a trigger assembly, and the firing pin, when activated by the trigger assembly, strikes the primer and discharges the round of ammunition accommodated by the chamber to propel the bullet out of the opposite end of the gun barrel;
wherein the firearm has a unique identifying indicia formed therein which, upon discharge of the round of ammunition, transfers an impression of the unique identifying indicia from the firearm to an exterior surface of the shell casing to identify that the shell casing was discharged by that firearm.
- 2. The firearm according to claim 1, wherein the firing pin has a striking surface which strikes the primer upon discharged of the firearm, and the unique identifying indicia is formed on the striking surface of the firing pin and the impression of the unique identifying indicia is transferred to the primer upon the firing striking the primer.
- 3. The firearm according to claim 1, wherein the identifying indicia is formed on an interior surface of the gun barrel and the impression of the unique identifying indicia is transferred to an exterior surface of the shell casing when the shell casing expands upon discharge of the round of ammunition by the firearm.
- 4. The firearm according to claim 3, wherein the unique identifying indicia is directly formed on an interior surface of the gun barrel which accommodates the desired round of ammunition to facilitate transferred of the impression of the unique identifying indicia to an exterior surface of the shell casing upon discharge of the round of ammunition by the firearm.
- 5. The firearm according to claim 3, wherein the unique identifying indicia is formed on an end surface of an insert and the insert is received by a radial bore extending normal to a projectile bore formed in the gun barrel so that the end surface is located adjacent a shell casing when the round of ammunition is accommodated within the gun barrel.
- 6. The firearm according to claim 5, wherein the insert, once received by the radial bore formed in the gun barrel, is permanently affixed to the gun barrel to prevent removal of the insert therefrom.
- 7. The firearm according to claim 5, wherein the end surface of the insert carrying the unique identifying indicia is formed in a curved surface and the curved surface of the insert is substantially flush with has an identical curvature to a curvature of a remainder of a cylindrical interior surface of the gun barrel.
- 8. The firearm according to claim 5, wherein the end surface of the insert, carrying the unique identifying indicia, is one of cylindrical, rectangular, hexagonal and square in shape.
- 9. The firearm according to claim 5, wherein the insert, carrying the unique identifying indicia, is one of mechanically bonded, welded, soldered and has an interference fit with the radial bore of the gun barrel.
- 10. The firearm according to claim 1, wherein the unique identifying indicia is one of a code, a bar code, a character set, an alphanumeric set, a symbol, a design and a mark.
- 11. The firearm according to claim 1, wherein the identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which extends from a base surface supporting the unique identifying indicia.
- 12. The firearm according to claim 1, wherein the identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which projects into a base surface supporting the unique identifying indicia.
- 13. The firearm according to claim 1, wherein the unique identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which extends from a base surface supporting the unique identifying indicia and at least one indicia feature which projects into the base surface supporting the unique identifying indicia.
- 14. The firearm according to claim 1, wherein the unique identifying indicia is formed by a laser.
- 15. A firearm comprising a gun barrel for accommodating a desired round of ammunition having a bullet, a shell casing and a primer, a chamber of the gun barrel having a firing pin associated therewith which is activated by a trigger assembly, and the firing pin has a striking surface which, when activated by the trigger assembly, strikes the primer and discharges the round of ammunition accommodated by the chamber to propel the bullet out of on opposite end of the gun barrel;
wherein the firearm has a unique identifying indicia formed therein which, upon discharge of the round of ammunition, transfers an impression of the unique identifying indicia from the firearm to an exterior surface of the shell casing to identify that the shell casing was discharged by that firearm, the unique identifying indicia is formed on one of the striking surface of the firing pin and an interior surface of the gun barrel whereby the impression of the unique identifying indicia is transferred to an exterior surface of the shell casing upon discharge of the round of ammunition by the firearm.
- 16. The firearm according to claim 15, wherein the unique identifying indicia is one of a code, a bar code, a character set, an alphanumeric set, a symbol, a design and a mark.
- 17. The firearm according to claim 15, wherein the identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which extends from a base surface supporting the unique identifying indicia.
- 18. The firearm according to claim 15, wherein the identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which projects into a base surface supporting the unique identifying indicia.
- 19. The firearm according to claim 15, wherein the identifying indicia comprises at least one indicia feature which extends from a base surface supporting the unique identifying indicia and at least one indicia feature which projects into the base surface supporting the unique identifying indicia.
- 20. A method of providing a firearm with a unique identifying indicia to facilitate marking of a shell casing upon discharge of the firearm, the method comprising the steps of:
providing a gun barrel for accommodating a desired round of ammunition, with the round of ammunition having a bullet, a shell casing and a primer, associating a firing pin associated with a chamber of the gun barrel whereby when the firing pin is activated by a trigger assembly, a striking surface of the firing pin strikes the primer and discharges the round of ammunition accommodated by the chamber to propel the bullet out of an opposite end of the gun barrel; forming a unique identifying indicia on one of the striking surface of the firing pin and an interior surface of the gun barrel of the firearm so that, upon discharge of the round of ammunition, an impression of the unique identifying indicia is transferred from the firearm to an exterior surface of the shell casing to identify that the shell casing was discharged by that firearm.
