- means for determining said adjustable starting position of said clamping means, wherein said adjustable starting position provides sufficient stroke for exerting said force for clamping and separating said platens, said means for determining including means for measuring the actual shutheight of said platens in the mold closed position, means for measuring the actual position of said clamping means, and means for calculating said adjustable starting position from said measurements;
- means for checking the position of said clamping means to determine if said sufficient stroke of said clamping means is present;
- means for adjusting said adjustable starting position based on the checked position of the clamping means so as to obtain sufficient stroke of the clamping means;
- means for sustaining said clamping force for a predetermined time;
- means for actuating said clamping means for developing said force for separating; and
- means to actuate said moving means to separate said mold halves.
- 2. The system according to claim 1, further comprising means for disabling and enabling said clamping means.
- 3. The system according to claim 2, wherein said means for disabling and enabling comprises a control valve for each of said clamping means.
- 4. The system according to claim 1, wherein said clamping means are actuated by pressurized fluid, said means for actuating comprising a multi-directional valve for directing said pressurized fluid to said clamping means.
- 5. The system according to claim 4, including a closed loop pressure controller means for controlling the rate of increase of clamping force by controlling the opening of said multi-directional valve.
- 6. The system according to claim 5, wherein said closed loop pressure controller means includes logic means for determining a maximum allowable deviation in the relative position between a plurality of said clamping means and for terminating actuation if said maximum allowable deviation is exceeded.
- 7. The system according to claim 6, further including means for measuring linear position of each of said plurality of said clamping means, wherein said means for measuring is operative with said logic means.
- 8. The system according to claim 1, wherein said means for determining an adjustable starting position and means for adjusting comprises a controller with computer program product means for determining said adjustable starting position.
- 9. The system according to claim 1, wherein said means for sustaining comprises a lockout valve operative to maintain said clamp-up force.
- 10. The system according to claim 1, wherein said clamping means is positioned on movable platens of a tandem injection molding machine having two movable platens and a central stationary platen, and wherein said connecting means comprise tie bars extending from said stationary platen for engagement by said clamping means as said movable platens move toward said stationary platen.
- 11. The system according to claim 1, wherein said clamping means comprises at least one body member having a structure which is movable as a single unit for securing to connecting means and for conveying said clamp-up force to said movable and fixed mold halves, said at least one body member adapted to be attached with at least one of said platens and including means for securing to said connecting means and means for conveying said clamping force to said mold halves for clamping said mold halves during injection molding, wherein said means for securing includes engagement means for placing said means for securing into and out of locking engagement with said connecting means, such that when said engagement means is out of locking engagement with said connecting means, said body member and said means for carrying are relatively movable.
- 12. The system according to claim 11, wherein said at least one body member is rotatable relative said connecting means for placing said engagement means into and out of engagement with said connecting means.
- 13. The system according to claim 12, wherein said clamping means is positioned with each movable platen of a tandem injection molding machine having two movable platens and a central stationary platen, said connecting means extending from said stationary platen for engagement by said clamping means as said movable platens move toward said stationary platen.
- 14. The system according to claim 11, further comprising means for rotating said clamping means into engagement with said connecting means and means for determining angular position of said clamping means for obtaining proper alignment with said connecting means.
- 15. The system according to claim 14, further including means for actuating said means for rotating.
- 16. The system according to claim 14, wherein said means for determining angular positions comprises proximity switches located with said means for rotating for detecting a prescribed angular orientation.
- 17. The system according to claim 8, further including means for detecting molded parts trapped in said mold halves.
- 18. The system according to claim 17, wherein said means for detecting comprises said controller including computer program product means.
- 19. The system according to claim 18, wherein said computer program product means comprise computer readable code means for comparing shut-heights of previous and current cycles and determining a representative value, said value potentially indicative of a trapped part, wherein if said representative value fails to meet a predetermined acceptable value, a part may be trapped and an indicator thereof is actuated.
