Claims
- 1. A method for controlling the volume of the chambers in a cylinder head of an engine in an in-line manufacturing process, said method comprising:
- determining, in line, the location of a finite plurality of points in the cylinder chamber as referenced to the face of the cylinder head, for each of the cylinder chambers of the cylinder head of the engine;
- transmitting, in electrical form, the results produced by the determining step for each cylinder chamber, to computing means;
- computing, using the computing means, the approximate volume of each chamber from said point locations;
- comparing, using said computing means, the computed volumes of the cylinder chambers; and
- selectively removing material from portions of the cylinder head defining the cylinder chambers, in line, as required in accordance with the results of said comprising step, so that all of said cylinder chambers have the same nominal volume.
- 2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein said determining step employs optical triangulation measurements.
- 3. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the engine includes pistons associated with said cylinder chambers, said method further comprising optically measuring the deck height of the engine pistons associated with said cylinder chambers.
- 4. A method for controlling the volume of the combustion chambers of an internal combustion engine with the combustion chambers defined in part by the cylinder chamber of the engine cylinder head in an in-line manufacturing process, said method comprising:
- measuring, in-line for each cylinder chamber of the cylinder head of the engine, the location of finite plurality of points in the cylinder chamber as referenced to the face of the cylinder head;
- computing from said point locations the approximate volumes of each of said cylinder chambers;
- measuring, in an in-line operation, for each combustion chamber of the cylinder head of the engine, at least one further parameter which determines the volume of at least a portion of that combustion chamber not defined by the cylinder chamber of the engine cylinder head;
- computing from said measurement of said further parameter the relative volumes of said portion of said combustion chambers;
- analyzing and comparing the computed approximate volumes of each cylinder chambers and the computed relative volumes for said combustion chambers;
- selectively varying, as required, for each combustion chamber to be provided, at least one of (i) the volume of the cylinder chamber of the engine cylinder chamber of the engine cylinder head and (ii) the at least one further parameter so as to vary the volumes that the combustion chambers will have in accordance with the analyzing step so that the combustion chambers to be provided are of the same nominal volume.
- 5. A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein the engine includes pistons, having a dome, associated with said cylinder chambers and said at least further parameter comprises the shape of the piston dome of the engine pistons.
- 6. A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein the engine includes pistons associated said cylinder chambers and said at least further parameter comprises the deck height of the engine pistons.
- 7. A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein said volume varying step comprises removal of the material from selected areas of the cylinder head.
- 8. A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein each said cylinder chamber has a piston associated therewith and said volume varying step comprises removal of material from selected areas of the piston.
- 9. A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein each said cylinder chamber includes a piston associated therewith and said volume varying step comprises removal of material from selected areas of the engine gasket.
- 10. A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein the engine includes a piston, having a dome, associated with a said cylinder chamber and the entire surface of the piston dome is scanned and the piston dome volume is calculated during said relative volume computing step.
- 11. A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein said engine includes an engine block having a bank face and said further parameter measuring step includes measuring the height of the engine pistons relative to the bank face of the engine block when the piston is at top dead center.
