Claims
- 1. A hood for collecting hot gases from an opening in a cylindrical body which rotates on a longitudinal axis comprising:
- (a) a circumferential sealing means along the edges of said hood in circumferential and frictional contact with said body;
- (b) a longitudinal sealing means along the edges of said hood in longitudinal contact with said body and including
- (i) a hinged metal plate,
- (ii) a curved convex edge of said plate in axial contact with said cylindrical body,
- (iii) a rotatable bar disposed in a direction along said hood parallel to a longitudinal axis of said cylindrical body, said plate attached to said bar, and
- (iv) means for rotationally biasing said curved convex edge of said metal plate against said body, and having a counterweight on an extension of said bar which penetrates a side wall of said hood;
- (c) means for pivoting said longitudinal sealing means away from contact with said body when a deposit of material on said body passes beneath said longitudinal seal, thereby permitting rotation of said body around said longitudinal axis; and
- (d) a gas seal between said bar and said hood structure.
- 2. The hood of claim 1 further comprising a cooling means.
- 3. The hood of claim 2 wherein the cooling means comprises a network of tubes through which water is circulated, said tubes located on outside walls of said hood.
- 4. The hood of claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the circumferential sealing means comprise:
- (a) a flexible refractory material; and
- (b) means for biasing said material into circumferential contact with said body.
- 5. The hood of claim 4 wherein the biasing means comprises:
- (a) a housing in which said material is disposed, said housing extending along the edge of said hood;
- (b) an opening in said housing through which said material extends radially inward towards said body;
- (c) a retaining band located within said housing and attached to a surface of said material opposite said body;
- (d) a tensioning band disposed radially outward from said body within said housing;
- (e) a plurality of compression spring means disposed between said retaining band and said tensioning band; and
- (f) means connected to the hood for placing said tensioning band in tension, whereby said compression spring means biases said material against said body.
- 6. The hood of claim 5 wherein the means for placing said tensioning band in tension comprises:
- (a) an elongated member attached to said tensioning band and having a circular threaded portion;
- (b) a fixed plate defining a hole through which said elongated member passes;
- (c) a coil spring extending around the threaded portion of the elongated member, with an end of said coil spring in contact with said fixed plate;
- (d) retaining means disposed at an end of said coil spring opposite said fixed plate; and
- (e) a nut rotatably mounted on said threaded portion of the elongated member, bearing against said retaining means, and compressing said coil spring, whereby tension is imparted to said tensioning band.
- 7. An apparatus for providing a circumferential seal between a cylindrical body and a hood provided to collect hot gases from an opening in said cylindrical body as said cylindrical body is rotated comprising:
- (a) a flexible band of refactory material; and
- (b) a means for biasing said material into circumferential and frictional contact with said body, the biasing means including
- (i) a housing in which said material is disposed, said housing extending along the edge of said hood,
- (ii) an opening in said housing through which said material extends radially inward towards said body,
- (iii) a retaining band within said housing attached to a surface of said material opposite said body,
- (iv) a tensioning band disposed circumferentially outward from said body within said housing,
- (v) a plurality of compression spring means disposed between said retaining band and said tensioning band, and
- (vi) a means for placing said tensioning band in tension, whereby said compression spring means biases said material against said body.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the means for placing said tensioning band in tension comprises:
- (a) an elongated member to which said tensioning band is attached;
- (b) a fixed plate with a hole through which said elongated member passes;
- (c) a coil spring placed around said elongated member with an end in contact with said plate;
- (d) a retaining means disposed at an end of said coil spring opposite said plate;
- (e) a circular threaded portion of said elongated member extending within said coil spring; and
- (f) a nut which rotates on said threaded portion, bearing against said retaining means and compressing said coil spring, whereby tension is imparted to said tensioning band.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the hole in said plate is of a noncircular cross section and closely surrounds the elongated member, which is of the same general cross section as said hole as it passes through said plate, whereby said elongated member is prevented from rotating as said nut is rotated.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9 wherein the compression spring means comprise generally V shaped spring clips, an apex of said clips in contact with said tensioning band and ends of said clips in contact with said retaining band.
- 11. An apparatus for providing a circumferential seal between a cylindrical body and a hood provided to collect hot gases from an opening in said cylindrical body as said cylindrical body is rotated comprising:
- (a) a flexible band of refractory material; and
- (b) a means for biasing said material into circumferential and frictional contact with said body, the biasing means including
- (i) a housing in which said material is disposed, said housing extending along the edge of said hood,
- (ii) a tension band disposed radially outward from said body within said housing, and
- (iii) means for placing said tension band in tension.
- 12. Apparatus according to claim 11 wherein the means for placing the tension band in tension comprises:
- (a) an elongated member attached to said tension band and having a circular threaded portion;
- (b) a fixed plate defining a hole through which said elongated member passes;
- (c) a coil spring extending around the threaded portion of the elongated member, with an end of said coil spring in contact with said fixed plate;
- (d) retaining means disposed at an end of said coil spring opposite said fixed plate; and
- (e) a nut rotatably mounted on said threaded portion of the elongated member, bearing against said retaining means and compressing said coil spring, whereby tension is imparted to said tension band.
