Claims
- 1. A coordinate measuring machine for measuring an object comprising:
a support platform for supporting the object; a probe supported by said support platform, said probe including a shaft having a contact end portion, said contact end portion including a tip for contacting the object; and heating means proximate said support platform for forming said tip whereby said tip is formed by heat transferred from said heating means to said contact end portion.
- 2. The machine according to claim 1 including drive means connected to at least one of said probe and said heating means for moving said probe and said heating means relative to each other.
- 3. The machine according to claim 1 wherein s aid shaft has a maximum shaft area perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said shaft, and said tip has a maximum tip area parallel said maximum shaft area, said maximum tip area being greater than said maximum shaft area.
- 4. The machine according to claim 1 wherein said tip is generally spherical.
- 5. The machine according to claim 1 including supply means supported relative to said support platform, said shaft including a supply portion disposed in said supply means.
- 6. The machine according to claim 5 including feeding means for incrementally extracting said supply portion from said supply means whereby said contact end portion is presentable to said heating means when said supply portion is extracted from said supply means.
- 7. The machine according to claim 1 including cutting means proximate said support platform for cutting said shaft prior to said heating means forming said tip.
- 8. The machine according to claim 7 including drive means connected to one of said probe and said cutting means for moving said probe and said cutting means relative to each other.
- 9. The machine according to claim 6 wherein said supply means includes a guide tube supported by said support platform, said supply portion being disposed in said guide tube.
- 10. The machine according to claim 9 wherein said feeding means includes at least one drive wheel rotatably supported relative to said guide tube, a portion of said supply portion frictionally engaging said at least one drive wheel, whereby said supply portion is drawn from said guide tube upon rotating said drive wheels.
- 11. The machine according to claim 9 where in supply means includes a spool rotatably supported relative to the guide tube, a portion of said supply portion being disposed about said spool.
- 12. A coordinate measuring machine for measuring an object comprising:
a support platform for supporting the object; a probe supported by said support platform, said probe including a tip for contacting the object; and cleaning means proximate said support platform for cleaning said tip.
- 13. The machine according to claim 12 wherein said cleaning means includes a compressed air source in fluid communication with said tip whereby particulate is removed from said tip by air supplied from said compressed air source.
- 14. The machine according to claim 13 wherein said cleaning means includes a guide tube, said compressed air source being connected in fluid communication with one end of said guide tube, said probe being disposed in said hollow portion with said tip extending from the other end of said guide tube.
- 15. The machine according to claim 12 including drive means connected to at least one of said probe and said cleaning means for moving said probe and said cleaning means relative to one and other whereby said tip and said cleaning means are positioned proximate each other when cleaning said tip with said cleaning means.
- 16. The machine according to claim 12 wherein said cleaning means includes a rinsing bath having a rinsing agent disposed in said rinsing bath, said probe and cleaning means being relatively positioned by said drive means whereby said tip is submersed in said rinsing agent when cleaning said tip with said cleaning means.
- 17. The machine according to claim 16 wherein said cleaning means includes agitation means for agitating said rinsing agent.
- 18. A coordinate measuring machine for measuring an object comprising:
a support platform for supporting the object; a probe supported by said support platform, said probe including a tip for contacting the object; and dislodging means proximate said tip for dislodging said tip from the object.
- 19. The machine according to claim 18 wherein said dislodging means includes a compressed air source in fluid communication with said tip whereby dust and other particles are removed from said tip by air supplied from said compressed air source.
- 20. The machine according to claim 19 wherein said dislodging means includes a guide tube supported by said support platform, said compressed air source being connected in fluid communication said guide tube, said probe being disposed in said guide tube with said tip extending from said guide tube whereby air supplied by said compressed air source is fed to said tip through said guide tube.
- 21. A coordinate measuring machine for measuring an object comprising:
a support platform for supporting the object; and a probe supported by said support platform, said probe including a flexible shaft and a tip extending from said flexible shaft, said tip including at least one stylus for contacting the object.
- 22. The machine according to claim 21 wherein said shaft has a maximum shaft area perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said shaft, and said tip has a maximum tip area parallel said maximum shaft area, said maximum tip area being greater than said maximum shaft area.
- 23. The machine according to claim 22 wherein said tip is generally spherical.
- 24. A coordinate measuring machine for measuring an object comprising:
a support platform for supporting the object; and scanning means supported by said support platform, said scanning means including a non-contact scanner, a probe, and drive means connected to at least one of said non-contact scanner and said probe for moving said non-contact scanner and said probe relative to one and other, said probe being detectable by said non-contact scanner.
- 25. A coordinate measuring machine for measuring an object comprising:
a support platform for supporting the object; and scanning means supported by said support platform, said scanning means including a non-contact scanner and a probe being detectable by said non-contact scanner; and a fiber-optic ring adapted for receiving light emitted by a light source and proximate said probe for illuminating said probe.
- 26. The machine according to claim 24 including a guide tube supported by said support platform, said probe extending from said guide tube.
- 27. The machine according to claim 25 wherein said ring is disposed in said guide tube and surrounds a portion of said probe.
