Claims
- 1. An automated banking machine apparatus comprising:a housing including at least one opening therethrough; a document handling mechanism positioned in the housing, wherein the document handling mechanism is in operative connection with the opening, and wherein the document handling mechanism is adapted to receive and move a stack including a plurality of documents passed through the opening; an unstack arrangement within the housing, wherein the unstack arrangement is operative to unstack documents individually from the moved stack; a document identification device within the housing, wherein the document identification device is operative to classify each unstacked document as either acceptable or unacceptable; and a routing mechanism in operative connection with the identification device, wherein the routing mechanism is operative to route documents classified by the identification device as unacceptable to a first area within the housing, and documents classified by the identification device as acceptable to a second area within the housing.
- 2. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the document handling mechanism includes the first area, and wherein the document handling mechanism is operative to deliver the documents classified as unacceptable out of the housing through the opening.
- 3. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the document handling mechanism includes the first area, and the apparatus further comprises a user interface in operative connection with the document identification device, and wherein the user interface is operative to receive a retry input from a user, and wherein the document identification device is operative responsive to receipt of the retry input to again classify each document in the first area as either acceptable or unacceptable, and wherein the routing mechanism is operative to route documents classified as unacceptable to the first area.
- 4. The apparatus according to claim 1 and further comprising:a user interface, wherein the user interface includes an output device; a control system in operative connection with the user interface, the document identification device and the document handling mechanism, wherein the control system is operative to calculate a number, wherein the number corresponds to the acceptable documents from the stack routed to the second area, and wherein the control system is operative to cause the output device of the user interface to output indicia corresponding to the number.
- 5. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the user interface further includes an input device, and the machine includes a third area and a transport within the housing, wherein the transport is in operative connection with the control system and the second area, and wherein after the indicia corresponding to the number is output by the output device the control system is operative responsive to a first input to the input device to deliver the acceptable documents out of the housing through a first opening in the housing, and is operative responsive to a second input to the input device to cause the acceptable documents to move from the second area to the third area through the transport.
- 6. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the document handing mechanism includes the second area, and wherein the first opening through which acceptable documents are delivered out of the housing in response to the second input is the same opening through which the stack is accepted.
- 7. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the indicia corresponding to the number is representative of a value associated with the acceptable documents routed to the second area.
- 8. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the user interface further includes an input device, and further including a third area within the housing and a transport extending intermediate of the second area and the third area, and wherein the transport is in operative connection with the control system, and wherein after the indicia representative of the number is output by the output device the control system is operative responsive to a deposit input to the input device to cause the acceptable documents to move from the second area to the third area through the transport.
- 9. The apparatus according to claim 8 wherein the control system is further operative responsive to the receipt of the deposit input to cause the identification device to again classify each document moved from the second area toward the third area, and wherein each document which is again classified as acceptable is moved to the third area through the transport.
- 10. The apparatus according to claim 9 wherein the control system is operative to cause documents moving from the second area toward the third area and not classified again as acceptable to be routed to the first area by the routing mechanism.
- 11. The apparatus according to claim 8 and wherein the user interface is operative to receive a dispense input, and wherein the control system is operative responsive to the receipt of the dispense input to move documents from the third area to the second area through the transport.
- 12. The apparatus according to claim 11 wherein the control system is further operative responsive to the dispense input to operate the document identification device to classify each document moved from the third area as either acceptable or unacceptable, and the routing mechanism is operative responsive to the document identification device to route documents determined to be unacceptable to the first area.
- 13. The apparatus according to claim 9 and wherein the user interface is operative to receive a dispense input, and wherein the control system is operative responsive to the receipt of the dispense input to move documents from the third area to the second area through the transport.
- 14. The apparatus according to claim 13 wherein the control system is further operative responsive to the dispense input to operate the document identification device to classify each document moved from the third area as either acceptable or unacceptable, and the routing mechanism is operative responsive to the document identification device to route documents classified as unacceptable to the first area.
- 15. The apparatus according to claim 8 and further comprising a canister, wherein the canister is removably mounted on the housing, and wherein the third area is on the canister.
- 16. The apparatus according to claim 15 wherein the third area includes a plurality of canisters, each canister removably mounted on the housing, and wherein each canister includes at least one storage area configured to hold documents therein, and wherein the document identification device is operative to identify a type associated with each acceptable document, and wherein the control system is operative to selectively move each acceptable document to a storage area responsive to the type associated with the particular acceptable document.
- 17. The apparatus according to claim 15 wherein the canister includes a plurality of storage areas thereon, wherein each storage area is configured for holding documents therein, wherein the document identification device is operative to identify a type associated with each acceptable document, and wherein the control system is operative to selectively move each acceptable document to a storage area responsive to the type associated with the particular acceptable document.
- 18. The apparatus according to claim 8 wherein the number is representative of an amount associated with the acceptable documents, and wherein the input device is further operative to receive at least one identification input corresponding to an account, and wherein the control system is further operative responsive to the deposit input and the identification input to cause the account to be credited with the amount.
- 19. The apparatus according to claim 5 and further comprising a sensor adjacent the first opening, wherein the sensor is in operative connection with the control system and is operative to sense removal of the documents from the first opening, and wherein the control system is operative responsive to not sensing removal of the acceptable documents through the one opening to cause the acceptable documents to move from the second area to the third area through the transport.
- 20. The apparatus according to claim 19 wherein the number corresponds to an amount associated with the acceptable documents, and wherein the user interface is further operative to receive an identification input corresponding to an account, and wherein the control system is further operative responsive to the identification input and the control system moving the acceptable documents to the third area to cause the account to be credited with the amount.
- 21. The apparatus according to claim 1 and further comprising an unstack device disposed operatively intermediate of the document handling mechanism and the document identification device, wherein the unstack device is operative to individually unstack each document from the stack.
- 22. The apparatus according to claim 21 and further comprising a central transport extending operatively between the unstack device and the document identification device wherein the central transport is operative to move each unstacked document individually adjacent to the identification device.
- 23. The apparatus according to claim 21 and further comprising a deskew device operatively intermediate of the unstack device and the document identification device, wherein the deskew device is operative to angularly align each unstacked document.
- 24. The apparatus according to claim 21 and further comprising an alignment device operatively intermediate of the unstack device and the document identification device, wherein the alignment device is operative to transversely position each unstacked document.
- 25. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the apparatus further comprises a central transport and a remote transport, and wherein the document identification device is adjacent to the central transport, and wherein the document handling mechanism includes a first area and is operative to deliver the documents in the stack from the first area to the central transport, and wherein the second area is in operative connection with the remote transport, and wherein documents from the stack are moved through the central transport adjacent the identification device, and wherein the routing mechanism is operative responsive to the identification device to route acceptable documents to the second area through the remote transport.
- 26. The apparatus according to claim 25 and further comprising a turnover device in operative connection with the central transport, wherein the turnover device is operative to reverse the direction of documents moving in the central transport.
- 27. The apparatus according to claim 25 and further comprising a document unstack device in operative connection with the document handling device, wherein the document unstack device is operative to separate each individual document from the stack and to produce a stream of individual separated documents in the central transport.
- 28. The apparatus according to claim 27 and further comprising a deskew device in operative connection with the central transport, wherein the deskew device is operative to angularly align each document in the stream in parallel relation with the other documents operated on by the deskew device.
- 29. The apparatus according to claim 27 and further comprising an alignment device in operative connection with the central transport, wherein the alignment device is operative to transversely position each document in the stream in a predetermined manner relative to a direction of movement of the documents in the stream.
- 30. The apparatus according to claim 29 wherein the central transport includes a transport center line extending in the direction of movement, and wherein each document has a document center line, and wherein the alignment device is operative to generally place the document center line of each document in the stream into aligned relation with the transport center line.
- 31. The apparatus according to claim 25 wherein the routing mechanism comprises a movably positionable divert gate, wherein in a first position of the divert gate documents from the stack are directed to the first area.
- 32. The apparatus according to claim 25 wherein the third area comprises a plurality of document storage areas, and wherein the remote transport further comprises a plurality of media gates, wherein the media gates are selectively operative to direct documents toward the storage areas.
- 33. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the document handling mechanism comprises:a first stack supporting member and a second stack supporting member, wherein the first area is bounded by the first and second stack supporting members; and an elevator mechanism, wherein the elevator mechanism is operative to relatively move the first and second stack supporting members along a first direction, whereby a stack accepted through the opening is enabled to be held in engaged intermediate relation between the first and second stack supporting members.
- 34. The apparatus according to claim 33 wherein at least one of the first and second stack supporting members is movable in a direction transverse to the first direction, and further comprising a first drive, wherein the first drive is selectively operative to move the one stack supporting member.
- 35. The apparatus according to claim 33 and further comprising a guide extending in generally the first direction, and wherein at least one of the first or second stack supporting members is movably mounted in supporting connection with the guide, wherein the one stack supporting member is movable in the first direction, and wherein at least one of the stack supporting members is movable relative to the guide in a direction transverse to the first direction, and further comprising a first drive, wherein the drive is operative to selectively move the one transversely movable stack supporting member in the transverse direction, and wherein the first drive includes the first guide.
- 36. The apparatus according to claim 35 wherein the first guide includes a first axis extending generally in the first direction, and the first guide is rotatably movably mounted relative to the housing about the first axis, and wherein in the operation of the first drive the first guide rotates about the first axis.
- 37. The apparatus according to claim 36 wherein the first drive is selectively operative to move the first guide in a first rotational direction or in an opposed direction, wherein rotation of the first guide in the first rotational direction is operative to move the one transversely movable stack supporting member in an input direction whereby a stack in engagement with the one transversely movable member is moved towards the document identification device, and wherein rotation of the first guide in the opposed rotational direction is operative to move the one transversely movable stack supporting member in an output direction, whereby a stack in engagement with the one transversely movable stack supporting member is moved towards the opening.
- 38. The apparatus according to claim 37 wherein both of the first and second stack supporting members are movable in generally the transverse direction, and wherein both of the stack supporting members move in the input direction responsive to rotation of the first guide in the first rotational direction and both of the first and second stack supporting members move in the output direction responsive to rotation of the first guide in the opposed rotational direction.
- 39. The apparatus according to claim 33 wherein the first and second stack supporting members are offset from one another wherein when the stack is in the first area the first stack supporting member is enabled to move in a direction relatively toward the second stack supporting member beyond a point wherein the opposed facing surfaces of the first and second stack supporting members bounding the first area are in generally parallel alignment.
- 40. The apparatus according to claim 33 wherein at least one of the first or second stack support surfaces includes a movable belt flight.
- 41. The apparatus according to claim 33 wherein the elevator mechanism is selectively operative to move the first area into generally aligned relation with the opening.
- 42. The apparatus according to claim 33 and further comprising an outer gate movably mounted relative to the housing, wherein the outer gate is selectively movable to open and close the opening, and an inner gate movably mounted relative to the housing, the inner gate disposed between the first area and the document identification device, wherein the inner gate is selectively operative to enable and prevent access between the first area and the document identification device, and further comprising a control system in operative connection with the inner and outer gates, wherein the control system is operative to cause the inner gate to close when the outer gate is open.
- 43. The apparatus according to claim 33 wherein the document handling mechanism comprises:a third stack supporting member and a fourth stack supporting member, wherein the second area is bounded by the third and fourth stack supporting members; and wherein the elevator mechanism is operative to relatively move the third and fourth stack supporting members in generally the first direction, whereby documents routed to the second area are enabled to be held in engaged relation between the third and fourth stack supporting members.
- 44. The apparatus according to claim 43 wherein the elevator mechanism is selectively operative to move the second area into generally aligned relation with the opening in the housing.
- 45. The apparatus according to claim 44 and further comprising a first guide extending in generally the first direction, and wherein the third and fourth stack supporting members are in movably supported connection with the first guide and movable relative to the housing, and wherein at least one of the third and fourth stack supporting members is movable in a transverse direction generally transverse of the first direction, and wherein in the one transversely movable third or fourth stack supporting member is operatively connected to the first guide, wherein rotation of the first guide moves the one transversely movable third or fourth stack supporting member in the transverse direction.
- 46. The apparatus according to claim 45 and further comprising a second guide disposed from the first guide, and wherein the second guide is rotationally movable relative to the housing, and wherein at least one of the first and second stack supporting members is movable in the generally transverse direction relative to the first direction, and wherein the transversely movable first or second stack supporting member is operatively connected to the second guide, wherein rotation of the second guide moves the one transversely movable first or second stack supporting member in the transverse direction.
- 47. The apparatus according to claim 46 wherein both of the first, second, third and fourth stack supporting members are movable generally in the transverse direction, and wherein the first and second stack supporting members are both in operative connection with the second guide and move in the transverse direction responsive to rotation of the second guide, and wherein the third and fourth stack supporting members are both in operative connection with the first guide and move in the transverse direction responsive to rotation of the first guide.
- 48. The apparatus according to claim 47 wherein the first, second, third and fourth stack supporting members include first, second, third and fourth generally transversely movable belt flights, respectively.
- 49. The apparatus according to claim 43 and further comprising a first carriage movable in generally a first direction, and wherein the second and third stack supporting members are in supporting connection with the first carriage.
- 50. The apparatus according to claim 49 wherein the elevator mechanism is operative to move the first carriage in generally the first direction by moving the stack supporting member in the first direction to operatively engage the fourth stack supporting member with the carriage.
- 51. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the opening is adapted to enable a stack including a plurality of documents to be passed therethrough.
- 52. The apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the first area within the housing is adapted to support a stack including a plurality of documents.
- 53. A method comprising the steps of:receiving a deposit stack comprising a plurality of documents through an opening in a housing of an automated banking machine; moving the received stack in a stack handling operation; unstacking documents individually from the moved stack with an unstack arrangement; classifying with a document identification device in the housing each unstacked document as either acceptable or unacceptable to the machine; and routing with a routing mechanism the classified documents wherein unacceptable documents are routed to a first area in the housing and acceptable documents are routed to a second area in the housing.
- 54. The method according to claim 53 and further comprising the step of removing the unacceptable documents in the first area from the housing.
- 55. The method according to claim 54 wherein in the removing step the unacceptable documents are removed from the housing through the opening.
- 56. The method according to claim 53 and further comprising the steps of:calculating with a control system in the housing a number corresponding to the documents routed to the second area in the routing step; and outputting indicia corresponding to the number through an output device of an interface of the machine.
- 57. The method according to claim 56 wherein in the calculating step the number corresponds to a value of the documents routed to the second area.
- 58. The method according to claim 56 and further comprising the steps of:inputting either a first input or a second input to an input device on the customer interface; and alternatively either: a) delivering the documents in the second area out of the housing when the first input is received in the inputting step; or b) transporting the documents in the second area to a third area in the housing responsive to the second input being received in the inputting step.
- 59. The method according to claim 58 wherein the transporting step includes further classifying with the document identification device each of the documents in the second storage area as either acceptable or unacceptable, and further routing documents classified as unacceptable in the further classifying step to the first area with the routing mechanism.
- 60. The method according to claim 58 wherein the transporting step comprises:identifying a type associated with each document with the document identification device; and selectively directing each document to document storage areas in the third area, wherein the third area comprises a plurality of document storage areas, and wherein each document is directed to a selected storage area responsive to the type determined in the identifying step as associated with the document.
- 61. The method according to claim 60 and further comprising the steps of:receiving an account input corresponding to an account through an input device of the interface; and crediting the account an amount corresponding to the number.
- 62. The method according to claim 56 and further comprising the steps of:inputting either a first input, a second input or a third input to an input device on the customer interface; and alternatively either: a) delivering the documents in the first and second areas out of the housing when the first input is received in the inputting step; or b) transporting the documents in the second area to a third area in the housing when the second input is received in the inputting step; or c) repeating the classifying and calculating steps for documents in the first and second areas when the third input is received in the inputting step.
- 63. The method according to claim 53 and further comprising the step of identifying a type associated with each document with the identification device, and calculating with the control system a value associated with the documents classified as acceptable in the classifying step.
- 64. The method according to claim 63 and further comprising the step of outputting with an output device on the interface of the machine indicia representative of the value.
- 65. The method according to claim 63 and further comprising the steps of:again classifying the documents routed to the first area in the routing step with the document identification device; again routing documents classified as acceptable in the again classifying step to the second area; and further calculating with the control system a new value associated with the documents classified as acceptable in the classifying and again classifying steps.
- 66. The method according to claim 60 and prior to the inputting step, further comprising the steps of:preliminarily identifying a preliminary type associated with each document classified as acceptable in the classifying step; and storing preliminary type data for each document in a memory; and wherein the transporting step further comprises the step of comparing the preliminary type for each document determined in the preliminary identifying step to the document type for the document determined in the identifying step.
- 67. The method according to claim 66 wherein documents are further selectively directed to storage areas in the selectively directing steps responsive to whether in the comparing step the preliminary type for the document corresponds to the document type for the document.
- 68. The method according to claim 60 and further comprising the step of storing in a memory associated with a control system data representative of a storage area wherein at least one document of a document type is stored.
- 69. The method according to claim 68 and further comprising the steps of:inputting with an input device of the interface, a dispense input; determining with the control system responsive to the memory data, a document type corresponding to the dispense input; further determining with the control system responsive to the memory data, a storage area wherein the document type is stored; and picking a document of the document type from the storage area with a picking mechanism.
- 70. The method according to claim 69 and further comprising the steps of:re-identifying with the document identification device a document type associated with the picked document; and checking with the control system whether the document type for the picked document determined in the re-identifying step corresponds to the document type determined in the determining step.
- 71. The method according to claim 70 and wherein when in the checking step the picked document type corresponds to the document type determined in the determining step, further comprising the step of delivering the picked document out of the housing.
- 72. The method according to claim 69 and after the picking step further comprising the steps of:sensing with a doubles detector if the document picked in the picking step is a single document; and if in the sensing step the document picked is sensed as not a single document further comprising the steps of: returning the picked document to the storage area; and re-picking a document from the storage area.
- 73. The method according to claim 53 and prior to the classifying step further comprising the step of unstacking the documents in the stack with an unstack device to produce a stream of separated documents, wherein in the classifying step each document in the stream is moved adjacent to the identification device.
- 74. The method according to claim 73 and after the unstacking step and prior to the classifying step, further comprising the step of deskewing with the deskew device each of the documents in the stream, wherein in the deskewing step each of the documents in the stream are angularly aligned.
- 75. The method according to claim 73 and after the unstacking step and prior to the classifying step further comprising the step of aligning with an aligning device each of the documents in the stream.
- 76. The method according to claim 75 wherein the stream moves in a transport path, wherein the transport path includes a path center line, and wherein each document in the stream has a center, and wherein in the aligning step the center of each document engaged with the aligning device is aligned so that the center of the document is generally at the transport center line.
- 77. The method according to claim 75 and after the unstacking step and prior to the classifying step, further comprising the step of turning each document in the stream with a turnover device.
- 78. The method according to claim 53 wherein the machine includes an outer gate adjacent the opening and an inner gate disposed intermediate of the first area and the document identification device, and prior to the receiving step further comprising the steps of:closing the inner gate, whereby the inner gate extends operatively intermediate of the first area and the identification device; and opening the outer gate to enable the stack of documents to be moved through the opening.
- 79. The method according to claim 78 and after the receiving step and prior to the classifying step, further comprising the steps of:closing the outer gate to close the opening; and opening the inner gate.
