Claims
- 1. A testing device for electrical conductors, said conductors having placed thereon, an alternating and/or a direct voltage, comprising, in combination:
- a voltage type sensor for monitoring the type of said voltage and sending a direct voltage signal when said voltage is a direct voltage and an alternating voltage signal when said voltage is an alternating voltage;
- a voltage sensor for receiving said direct and alternating voltage signals and measuring said voltage, said voltage sensor providing a direct voltage measurement signal upon receiving said direct voltage signal and providing an alternating voltage measurement signal upon receiving said alternating voltage signal; and
- a displaying for receiving said alternating and direct voltage signals and responsively displaying said voltage of said conductors.
- 2. A testing device as claimed in claim 1 further comprising a tactile transducer activated when said voltage is an alternating voltage and a power supply having a steady current source in series with said tactile transducer.
- 3. A testing device as claimed in claim 2 further comprising a continuity tester and a pair of leads, said continuity tester including a separate power supply and a separate alarm to indicate electrical continuity between said leads, said continuity tester being substantially electrically independent of said voltage type sensor, voltage sensor, display and steady current source.
- 4. A circuit testing device as claimed in claim 3 wherein said separate alarm comprises a transducer for emitting a sound when continuity is detected.
- 5. A testing device as claimed in claim 2 wherein said alternating voltage defines a peak value and said alternating voltage measurement signal represents less than said peak value.
- 6. A testing device as claimed in claim 2 further comprising a pair of leads interconnected to said voltage sensor and wherein said voltage sensor measures said voltage when said leads are interconnected to said conductors and wherein said device further comprises display hold means for maintaining said display when said leads are removed from said conductors.
- 7. A testing device as claimed in claim 2 further comprising a case substantially encompassing said voltage sensor, said tactile transducer and said steady current source, and wherein said tactile transducer comprises a coil in series with said steady current source and a magnet fixedly attached to said case, adjacent said coil, whereby said magnet and case vibrate at a frequency substantially related to said frequency of said alternating voltage of said electrical conductors.
- 8. A testing device as claimed in claim 2 wherein said device further comprises a positive lead and a negative lead and first and second lights interconnected to said leads, said first light illuminating when said negative lead is interconnected to a ground potential and said second light illuminating when said positive lead is interconnected to a ground potential.
- 9. A testing device as claimed in claim 8 wherein said lights are in series with said steady current source, whereby said lights provide a substantially constant level of illumination.
- 10. A testing device as claimed in claim 2 further comprising:
- a casing for enclosing said voltage type sensor, voltage sensor, display, and steady current source;
- first and second electrical test leads extending from said case and interconnected to said voltage type sensor; and
- clip means, fixedly attached to said case, for releasably holding one of said leads, whereby a technician may hold said testing device and said one of said leads in one hand.
