- 5. The cutting insert according to claim 4, wherein the depth of each channel varies along the length of each of said cutting channels.
- 6. The cutting insert according to claim 5, wherein:
the depth of the cross-section increases along the length of said first cutting channel in each of said peripheral edges; and the depth of the cross-section decreases along the length of said second cutting channel in each of said peripheral edges, so that the deepest point of each of said first peripheral channels is disposed adjacent to the shallowest point of each of said second peripheral channels, and the shallowest point of each of said first peripheral channels is disposed adjacent to the deepest point of each of said second peripheral channels.
- 7. The cutting insert according to claim 1, wherein the body is comprised of a cobalt matrix material.
- 8. The cutting insert according to claim 7, wherein the body comprises an outer coating of titanium aluminum nitride.
- 9. The cutting insert according to claim 1, wherein said insert has a square geometry.
- 10. The cutting insert according to claim 1, wherein each of said grooves has about a 7 degree relief angle.
- 11. A cutting tool for cutting and deburring metal, comprising:
an arm for holding a cutting insert, said arm comprising a substantially square cut-out section for receiving a cutting insert, a substantially square cutting insert, said cutting insert comprising a first and a second cutting channel on each of the peripheral edges of said cutting insert; each of said cutting channels having a substantially elliptical cross-section; and the depth of the cross-section increases along the length of said first cutting channel in each of said peripheral edges; and the depth of the cross-section decreases along the length of said second cutting channel in each of said peripheral edges, so that the deepest point of each of said first-peripheral channels is disposed adjacent to the shallowest point of each of said second peripheral channels, and the shallowest point of each of said first peripheral channels is disposed adjacent to the deepest point of each of said second peripheral channels, so that the cutting insert can be rotated about any of the x, y and z axes and still provide a cutting channel of the same orientation in the arm of the cutting tool.
- 12. A method of cutting and de-burring a metal object, comprising:
providing a cutting tool with a cutting arm; providing a cutting insert having front and back sides and four peripheral edges, each of said peripheral edges comprising first and second cutting channels, each of said first cutting channels being configured to provide a specific cut upon the front on the insert being disposed facing the cutting arm of the cutting tool, and each of said second cutting channels being configured to provide substantially the same cut as the first cutting channels upon the back of the insert being disposed facing the cutting arm of the cutting tool; disposing the cutting insert in the cutting tool with one of the cutting channels in position to cut a piece of metal; cutting a plurality of metal objects with one of said first cutting channels of said cutting insert; removing the cutting insert from the cutting tool; and replacing the cutting insert in the cutting tool with a different one of said cutting channels being in position to cut a piece of metal.
- 13. A cutting insert for a device to cut and de-burr metal, said insert comprising:
a body having a substantially regular geometry, said body having a number of peripheral edges; each of said peripheral edges comprising two cutting channels, with no additional cutting channels being disposed in the peripheral edges of the body.
- 14. The cutting insert according to claim 13, wherein each of said cutting channels has a substantially elliptical cross-section.
- 15. The cutting insert according to claim 13, wherein each of said cutting channels has essentially the same dimensions.
- 16. The cutting insert according to claim 15, wherein:
the depth of the cross-section increases along the length of said first cutting channel in each of said peripheral edges; and the depth of the cross-section decreases along the length of said second cutting channel in each of said peripheral edges, so that the deepest point of each of said first peripheral channels is disposed adjacent to the shallowest point of each of said second peripheral channels, and the shallowest point of each of said first peripheral channels is disposed adjacent to the deepest point of each of said second peripheral channels.
- 17. A cutting insert for a device to cut and de-burr metal, said insert comprising:
a body having a substantially regular geometry, said body having a number of peripheral edges; at least one of said peripheral edges comprising a pair of cutting channels; and said pair of cutting channel each having dimensions substantially identical to the other; wherein each of said cutting channels has a substantially elliptical cross-section and said pair of channels are disposed so that the depth of the first increases in a direction, and the depth of the second decreases in the same direction in which the depth of the first increases.
- 18. The cutting insert according to claim 16, wherein each of said peripheral edges comprises a pair of cutting channels.
