Claims
- 1. A system for emitting volatile materials, said system comprising:
an article of manufacture that contains at least one volatile material, said article of manufacture comprising a cover; a device for emitting volatile materials from said article of manufacture, said device comprising a housing, wherein a portion of said housing and at least a portion of the cover of said article of manufacture together define an air flow path for emitting said volatile materials from said device.
- 2. A device for emitting volatile materials, said device comprising:
a heater comprising a heating element comprising a heated surface and a spring in mechanical communication with said heated surface, wherein said heated surface is moveable in a first direction away from a force exerted on said heated surface as a result of compression of said spring, and is moveable in a second direction which is opposite to said first direction upon removal of a force exerted on said heated surface.
- 3. The device of claim 2 wherein said spring is oriented in a vertical direction so that said first direction is downward and said second direction is upward.
- 4. The device of claim 2 wherein said spring has an axis and said heated surface is disposed in a pivoting relationship relative to said spring so that said heated surface can also be tilted relative to the axis of said spring.
- 5. A device for emitting volatile materials, said device comprising:
a housing, said housing comprising a cover joined to a portion of said housing, said cover having an open position and a closed position, wherein said housing comprises an area into which an article of manufacture comprising at least one volatile composition is inserted, and said device comprises an activation mechanism that is configured to require an article of manufacture be inserted into said housing and said cover is moved to its closed position before said activation mechanism is activated.
- 6. The device of claim 5 wherein said cover is hingedly joined to said portion of said housing.
- 7. The device of claim 5 wherein said area into which an article of manufacture is inserted comprises a recess.
- 8. The device of claim 5 wherein said activation mechanism comprises a switch.
- 9. The device of claim 8 wherein said switch is connected at least indirectly to a spring, and said spring requires the article of manufacture be inserted into the housing, and the cover of the housing closed in order to activate the activation mechanism.
- 10. The device of claim 9 wherein the closing of the cover of the housing contacts the article of manufacture which is in contact with the activation mechanism, and exerts an additional force on the activation mechanism.
- 11. The device of claim 9 wherein said spring exerts a force on said article of manufacture to assist in ejecting said article of manufacture from said device when said cover is opened.
- 12. A device for emitting volatile materials, said device comprising:
a heating system comprising a heating element for heating volatile materials, a power supply, and a temperature control system, wherein said temperature control system comprises one or more devices that measure the temperature of the heating element and adjust the power supplied to the heating element by the power supply to maintain the heating element at a desired temperature.
- 13. The device of claim 12 wherein said temperature control system is a closed loop feedback system.
- 14. The device of claim 12 wherein said temperature control system comprises a temperature measuring device that is electrically connected to a temperature adjusting device.
- 15. The device of claim 12 wherein said temperature measuring device comprises at least one of the following: a thermocouple, a thermister, and a resistance temperature detector; and said temperature adjusting device comprises a control circuit.
- 16. A device for emitting volatile materials and placement instructions for use of said device, wherein said device comprises a discharge outlet, and said placement instructions comprise:
an instruction to place the device in a location where the discharge outlet faces the center of the area in which the device is placed, wherein said placement instructions are provided on at least one of the following: on said device; on packaging for said device; and in separate materials provided with said device.
- 17. The device and instructions of claim 16 wherein said instructions further comprise an instruction to place the device on a hard surface between about 2 and about 4 feet above the floor of a room.
- 18. A device for emitting volatile materials and placement instructions for use of said device, wherein said device comprises a discharge outlet, said placement instructions comprising:
an instruction to place the device in a location wherein the direction of airflow from the discharge outlet of the device is in the same general direction as the natural air flow in the space in which the device is placed, wherein said placement instructions are provided on at least one of the following: on said device; on packaging for said device; and in separate materials provided with said device.
- 19. An article of manufacture that contains at least one volatile material, said article of manufacture comprising a cover with a rotating container inside said cover, said rotating container containing said at least one volatile material, said cover having a hole therein, said article of manufacture further comprising a locking element that engages said rotating container to prevent the same from rotating while it is outside a device for emitting volatile materials from the article of manufacture, wherein said locking element is accessible through the hole in said cover.
- 20. A system for emitting volatile materials, said system comprising:
an article of manufacture that contains at least one volatile material, said article of manufacture comprising a cover with a rotating container inside said cover, said rotating container containing said at least one volatile material, said cover having a hole therein, said article of manufacture further comprising a locking element that engages said rotating container to prevent the same from rotating while it is outside a device for emitting volatile materials from the article of manufacture, wherein said locking element is accessible through the hole in said cover; a device for emitting volatile materials from said article of manufacture, said device comprising a housing, and a component within said housing that is configured to exert a force on said locking element through said hole, wherein said force exerted by said component disengages the locking element from said rotating container.
- 21. The system of claim 20 wherein said locking element comprises a cantilever structure joined to a portion of said cover.
- 22. An article of manufacture that contains at least one volatile material, said article of manufacture comprising a cover with a rotatable container inside said cover, said rotatable container containing said at least one volatile material, said cover having a hole therein that exposes a portion of said rotatable container comprising a hub having an axis about which said rotatable container can rotate, wherein said hub is accessible through the hole in said cover.
- 23. The article of manufacture of claim 22 wherein said hub projects from the hole in said cover.
- 24. The article of manufacture of claim 22 wherein said hub has an asymmetric configuration about said axis.
