Claims
- 1. A ceramic filter comprising a plurality of end-plugged honeycomb structures which in combination act to trap and combust diesel exhaust particulates.
- 2. The ceramic filter of claim 1 wherein exhaust gas flows substantially equally through the plurality of end-plugged honeycombs.
- 3. The ceramic filter of claim 2 wherein the end-plugged honeycomb structures comprises a plurality of alternatingly end-plugged cell channels extending from an inlet face to an outlet face.
- 4. The ceramic filter of claim 1 wherein the filter comprises two end-plugged honeycomb structures.
- 5. The ceramic filter of claim 4 wherein the two honeycomb structures are parallel to the flow of exhaust gas.
- 6. The ceramic filter of claim 5 wherein the filter further comprise:
an enclosure provided with an inlet cone and an outlet cone, wherein the enclosure houses the two honeycomb structures, wherein the two honeycomb structures are mounted off-center within the enclosure; means for separating the unfiltered exhaust gas entering the filter from the exhaust gas filtered by the two honeycomb structures.
- 7. The ceramic filter of claim 6 wherein two honeycomb structures are circular in cross-section.
- 8. The ceramic filter of claim 4 wherein the two honeycomb structures are perpendicular to the flow of exhaust gas.
- 9. The ceramic filter of claim 8 wherein the filter further comprises:
an enclosure provided with an inlet cone and an outlet cone, wherein the enclosure houses the two honeycomb structures, wherein the two honeycomb structures are centrally positioned and mounted side-by-side within the enclosure; means for separating the unfiltered exhaust gas entering the filter from the exhaust gas filtered by the two honeycomb structures.
- 10. The ceramic filter of claim 7 wherein the two end-plugged honeycombs are square in cross-section.
- 11. A diesel exhaust particulate filter comprising:
an enclosure provided with an inlet cone and an outlet cone, wherein exhaust gas flows through the inlet cone and out the outlet cone; a first end-plugged honeycomb structure positioned adjacent the inlet cone, and a second end-plugged honeycomb structure positioned adjacent the outlet cone, wherein the first end-plugged honeycomb structure and the second end-plugged honeycomb structure are parallel to the flow of exhaust gas; wherein the first end-plugged honeycomb structure and the second end-plugged honeycomb structure are mounted off-center within the enclosure; means for separating the unfiltered exhaust gas entering the filter from the exhaust gas filtered by the first end-plugged honeycomb structure and the second end-plugged honeycomb structure.
- 12. The diesel exhaust particulate filter of claim 11 wherein both end-plugged honeycomb structures are made of cordierite.
- 13. The diesel exhaust particulate filter of claim 12 wherein both end-plugged honeycomb structures are circular in cross-section.
- 14. The diesel exhaust particulate filter of claim 13 wherein the diesel particulate filter has a length of at least 20.32 cm (8 inches).
- 15. A diesel exhaust particulate filter comprising:
an enclosure provided with an inlet cone and an outlet cone, wherein exhaust gas flows through the inlet cone and out the outlet cone; a first end-plugged honeycomb structure positioned adjacent the inlet cone, and a second end-plugged honeycomb structure positioned adjacent the outlet cone, wherein the first end-plugged honeycomb structure and the second end-plugged honeycomb structure are perpendicular to the flow of exhaust gas; wherein the first end-plugged honeycomb structure and the second end-plugged honeycomb structure are centrally positioned and mounted side-by-side within the enclosure; means for separating the unfiltered exhaust gas entering the filter from the exhaust gas filtered by the first end-plugged honeycomb structure and the second end-plugged honeycomb structure.
- 16. The diesel exhaust particulate filter of claim 15 wherein both end-plugged honeycomb structures are made of cordierite.
- 17. The diesel exhaust particulate filter of claim 16 wherein both end-plugged honeycomb structures are square in cross-section.
- 18. The diesel exhaust particulate filter of claim 17 wherein diesel particulate filter has a length of at least 20.32 cm (8 inches).
