Claims
- 1. A method of recording audio signals on a motion picture film having at least left-channel and right-channel digital sound tracks extending along a film running direction, comprising the steps of:
- recording left-channel and right-channel audio data on the sound tracks;
- wherein the temporally same left and right channel audio signals are recorded respectively on the left-channel and right channel digital sound tracks with a spatial shift of a pre-set distance along the film running direction.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein compensation data for compensating said right-channel audio data are recorded on a recording area provided in said left-channel digital soundtrack, and wherein compensation data for compensating said left-channel audio data are recorded on a recording area provided in said right-channel digital soundtrack.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein level ratio data indicating the level ratio between the compensation data and the audio data compensated by said compensation data is recorded in the recording area along with the compensation data.
- 4. An apparatus for recording audio signals on a motion picture film having at least left-channel and right-channel digital sound tracks extending along a film running direction, and left-channel and right-channel audio data recorded on the sound tracks, comprising:
- means for recording the left-channel audio data on the left-channel digital sound track; and
- means for recording the right channel audio data which is temporally the same as the left channel audio data on the right channel digital sound track with a spatial shift of a pre-set distance along the film running direction.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4, further comprising means for recording pictures as a series of picture frames in a picture area of said film, and wherein said pre-set distance is 17.8 picture frames.
- 6. An apparatus for recording pictures and audio signals on a motion picture film having a picture recording area and at least left-channel and right-channel digital sound tracks extending along a film running direction, comprising:
- means for recording pictures frame-by-frame in the picture recording area;
- means for recording left-channel and right-channel audio data on the sound tracks; and
- wherein temporary coincident pictures and audio data are recorded along the film running direction at approximately coincident physical positions in at least a first of said two digital sound tracks and the picture recording area, wherein audio data of a second of said two digital soundtracks is recorded at a position which is shifted a predetermined distance along the film running direction with respect to said first digital soundtrack.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein said predetermined distance is 17.8 picture frames.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 6, further comprising means for recording an analog sound track in an analog sound track area of said film, and wherein said analog sound track is separated by approximately 20.5 frames from temporally coincident pictures.
- 9. A method for encoding motion picture film with digital audio, comprising the steps of:
- printing a plurality of picture frames arranged along a direction of film travel;
- recording a digitally encoded audio signal on said film in a first location relative to a temporally coincident picture frame;
- recording said digitally encoded audio signal in a second location relative to said temporally coincident picture frame with a predetermined spatial separation between said first and second locations along said direction of film travel.
- 10. The method of claim 9, wherein said predetermined spatial separation is 17.8 picture frames.
- 11. An apparatus for encoding motion picture film with digitally encoded audio comprising in combination:
- means for receiving a plurality of audio signals including center, subwoofer, left, right, left center, right center, left surround and right surround audio signals;
- a left mixer for mixing said left, left surround and left center audio signals to produce a left audio compensation signal;
- a right mixer for mixing said right, right surround, and right center audio signal to produce a right audio compensation signal;
- a left multiplexer for multiplexing said center audio signal, left audio signal, left center audio signal, left surround audio signal, subwoofer audio signal and said right audio compensation signal;
- a right multiplexer for multiplexing said center audio signal, right audio signal, right center audio signal, right surround audio signal, subwoofer audio signal and said left audio compensation signal;
- means for recording an output of said left multiplexer on an optical film strip as a first digital audio track; and
- means for recording an output of said right multiplexer on an optical film strip as a second digital audio track, with said second digital audio track separated by said first digital audio track by a predetermined distance along a direction of film travel.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising level ratio data generating means for generating left level ratio data indicating the relative signal levels between said left compensation audio signal and said left, left center and left surround audio signals, and for generating right level ratio data indicating the relative signal levels between said right compensation data and said right, right center and right surround audio signals.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12, wherein said left and right level ratio data generated by the level data generating means are recorded along with said left and right compensation data on said optical film strip.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising:
- a first level analyzer receiving said left, left center, and left surround audio signals and said left audio compensation signal for analyzing the level ratio between said left audio compensation signal, and said left, left center, and left surround audio signals, and providing left level ratio data indicating the level ratio thereof; and,
- a second level analyzer receiving said right, right center, and right surround audio signals and said right compensation audio signal for analyzing the level ratio between said mixed right audio signal, and said right, right center, and right surround audio signals, and providing right level ratio data indicating the level ratio thereof.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14, further comprising a plurality of left coders and right coders for receiving at least one of said plurality of audio signals and respectively providing left and right coded audio signals to said left and right multiplexers.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein said left and right coders code said audio signals by high compression coding including sub-band coding and orthogonal transform coding.
- 17. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising first and second modulators for respectively modulating said left and right coded audio signals.
- 18. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising an error correction code generator for generating error correction code and appending it to said output of said left and right multiplexers for recording as a part of said left and right digital audio tracks.
