Claims
- 1. A digital transmission system, for transmitting a digital signal comprising a plurality of information signal components including at least a first component, a second component and a first auxiliary component, over a transmission medium from a transmitter to a receiver, wherein
- said transmitter comprises:
- an encoder including analysis means for altering and data-reducing said first component and second component to obtain a number n of sub-signals for each of said first component and second component,
- means for combining said number n of sub-signals for each of said first component and said second component and a signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component to form said digital signal, and
- transmission means for transmitting said digital signal via the transmission medium, and
- said receiver comprises:
- receiving means for receiving said digital signal,
- derivation means for deriving said number n of sub-signals for each of said first component and said second component and said signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component from the received digital signal, and
- a decoder for obtaining respective replicas of the information signal components, said decoder including synthesis means for expanding and combining said sub-signals for said first component and for expanding and combining said sub-signals for said second component.
- 2. A system as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that said analysis means also alters said first auxiliary component to obtain a plurality of auxiliary sub-signals for said first auxiliary component, said plurality of auxiliary sub-signals being said signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component, and
- said synthesis means combines the auxiliary sub-signals to obtain the replica of said first auxiliary component.
- 3. A system as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that said analysis means includes means for data-reducing the first auxiliary component, said signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component being a data-reduced version of the auxiliary component,
- said combining means combines said number n of sub-signals and said data-reduced version to form said digital signal, and
- said synthesis means performs data expansion on the data-reduced version to obtain a non-data-reduced replica of said auxiliary component.
- 4. A system as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that said transmitter further comprises signal generator means for generating a control signal identifying the type of said first auxiliary component,
- said means for combining combines said control signal into said digital signal,
- said receiver further comprises detection means for detecting said control signal, and
- said derivation means is responsive to said control signal in deriving said signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component.
- 5. A digital transmission system, for transmitting a digital signal comprising a plurality of information signal components including at least a first wide-band audio component, a second wide-band audio component and a first auxiliary component, over a transmission medium from a transmitter to a receiver, wherein
- said transmitter comprises:
- an encoder including analysis means for filtering and data reducing said first and second components to obtain subband signals in a number n of subbands for each of said first component and second component,
- means for combining said subband signals and a signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component to form said digital signal, and
- transmission means for transmitting said digital signal via the transmission medium, and
- said receiver comprises:
- receiving means for receiving said digital signal,
- derivation means for deriving said subband signals and said signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component from the received digital signal, and
- a decoder for obtaining respective replicas of the information signal components, said decoder including synthesis means for expanding and combining the subband signals for said first component and expanding and combining the subband signals for said second component.
- 6. A system as claimed in claim 5, characterized in that said first auxiliary component represents user-discernible information,
- said analysis means also alters the first auxiliary component to obtain a plurality of auxiliary sub-signals for said first auxiliary component, said plurality of auxiliary sub-signals being said signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component,
- said means for confining combines said subband signals and said auxiliary sub-signals to form said digital signal, and
- said synthesis means combines the auxiliary sub-signals to obtain a replica of said first auxiliary component.
- 7. A system as claimed in claim 6, characterized in that said first auxiliary signal component is a third digital audio signal component.
- 8. A system as claimed in claim 7, characterized in that said at least a first auxiliary signal component further comprises a fourth digital audio signal component,
- said signal generator means generates a signal type control signal indicating the type of said third and fourth digital audio signal components, and
- responsive to said signal type control signal, said derivation means derives replicas of said third and fourth digital audio signals.
- 9. A system as claimed in claim 8, characterized in that said audio signal components are the four components of a surround sound audio signal.
- 10. A system as claimed in claim 5, characterized in that said first auxiliary component represents user-discernible information,
- said analysis means includes means for data-reducing the first auxiliary component, said signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component being a data-reduced version of the auxiliary component,
- said combining means combines said subband signals and said data-reduced version to form said digital signal, and
- said synthesis means performs data expansion on the data-reduced version to obtain a non-data-reduced replica of said auxiliary component.
- 11. A system as claimed in claim 5, characterized in that said transmitter further comprises signal generator means for generating a control signal identifying the type of said first auxiliary component,
- said means for combining combines said control signal into said digital signal,
- said receiver further comprises detection means for detecting said control signal, and
- said derivation means is responsive to said control signal in deriving said signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component.
- 12. A system as claimed in claim 5, characterized in that said transmitter further comprises signal generator means for generating a signal presence control signal indicating the presence or absence of said first auxiliary component,
- said means for combining combines said signal presence control signal into said digital signal,
- said receiver further comprises detection means for detecting said signal presence control signal, and
- responsive to said signal presence control signal said derivation means derives said signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component.
- 13. A system as claimed in claim 5, characterized in that said means for combining further comprises formatting means for supplying said digital signal at an output as consecutive frames, each frame comprising first, second and third frame portions, the first frame portion comprising synchronizing information and system information, and the second and third frame portions comprising signal information.
- 14. A system as claimed in claim 13, characterized in that the means for data reducing quantizes samples of the respective subband signals,
- the second frame portion of a frame contains allocation information which, for at least a number of subband signals, indicates the number of bits representing the quantized samples, and
- the third frame portion contains the bits representing at least said quantized samples.
- 15. A system as claimed in claim 14, characterized in that the third frame portion also includes bit allocation for the first auxiliary component.
- 16. A system as claimed in claim 14, characterized in that the third frame portion further includes information related to scale factors, a scale factor being associated with at least one of the quantized samples contained in said third frame portion, and
- the scale factor information is included in the third frame portion before the quantized samples.
- 17. A system as claimed in claim 14, characterized in that the third frame portion also includes a scale factor for the first auxiliary component.
- 18. A system as claimed in claim 14, characterized in that, upon reception in the receiver, said quantized samples are applied to said synthesis means in the order in which said quantized samples are inserted in the third frame portion.
- 19. A system as claimed in claim 14, characterized in that the allocation information contained in the second frame portion is inserted in the same order as said quantized samples are inserted in the third frame portion.
- 20. A system as claimed in claim 14, characterized in that said transmitter further comprises signal generator means for generating a control signal identifying the type of said first auxiliary component,
- said means for combining combines said control signal into the third frame portion of said digital signal after the samples of the first and second component,
- said receiver further comprises detection means for detecting said control signal, and
- said derivation means is responsive to said control signal in deriving said signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component.
- 21. A receiver for a digital signal transmitted over a transmission medium, said signal comprising a plurality of information signal components including at least a first and a second wide-band audio component transmitted as subband signals in a number n of subbands and a signal corresponding to a first auxiliary component representing user-discernible information, characterized in that said receiver comprises:
- receiving means for receiving said digital signal,
- derivation means for deriving said subband signals and said signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component from the received digital signal,
- a decoder for obtaining respective replicas of the first and second wide-band audio components and said user-discernible information, said decoder including synthesis means for expanding and combining the subband signals for said first wideband audio component and for expanding and combining the subband signals for said second wide-band audio component.
- 22. A receiver as claimed in claim 21, characterized in that said user-discernible information is an additional audio signal.
- 23. A receiver as claimed in claim 21, characterized in that said user-discernible information is a text signal.
- 24. A receiver as claimed in claim 21, characterized in that said user-discernible information is a picture signal.
- 25. A method of transmitting a digital signal which includes a plurality of information signal components including at least a first component, a second component, and a first auxiliary component, comprising the steps of:
- a) altering said first component and said second component,
- b) data reducing the altered first component and the altered second component to obtain a number n of sub-signals for each of said first component and second component,
- c) combining said number n of sub-signals for each of said first component and said second component and a signal corresponding to said first auxiliary component to form said digital signal, and
- d) transmitting said digital signal.
- 26. A method as claimed in claim 25, wherein the transmitting step comprises recording said digital signal on a magnetic tape record carrier.
- 27. A method as claimed in claim 25, wherein the transmitting step comprises recording said digital signal on a record carrier.
- 28. A record carrier produced by the method of claim 27.
