Claims
- 1. An electrographic element comprising a transparent, releasable dielectric image receptive layer having a dielectric adhesive activation temperature T.sub.Ad supported on an electrically conductive carrier sheet for use in producing an image on a permanent receptor substrate having a front surface, by a process comprising:
- (a) Applying an adhesive coating to form an adhesive layer on said substrate front surface, the adhesive coating being tacky at a temperature less than the adhesive activation temperature T.sub.Ad of the dielectric layer;
- (b) Producing a toned mirror image of the image on the image receptive layer of the electrographic element
- (c) Contacting the image receptive layer and the toned image thereon, to the adhesive layer and adhering the electrographic element to the substrate; and
- (d) Separating and removing the carrier sheet from the dielectric image receptive layer, whereby the dielectric image receptive layer and the toned image remain on the substrate;
- said releasable dielectric image receptive layer having a bonding force with the carrier sheet which is weaker than the bonding force between the image receptive layer and the adhesive layer at a temperature below said dielectric adhesive activation temperature T.sub.Ad.
- 2. An electrographic element according to claim 1 wherein the dielectric layer supported on the carrier sheet has a glass transition temperature T.sub.g of less than about 100.degree. C. and an imaging surface roughness between about 6 and 12 .mu.m.
- 3. An electrographic element according to claim 2 wherein the dielectric layer supported on the carrier sheet has a back surface in contact with a surface of the carrier sheet, and wherein the carrier sheet surface has a preselected texture, and such texture is imparted on the back surface of said dielectric layer in contact with said carrier sheet.
- 4. The electrographic element according to claim 1 wherein the dielectric layer is coated on the supporting carrier sheet by extrusion coating.
- 5. The electrographic element according to claim 1 wherein the dielectric layer comprises Ethylene Vinyl alcohol.
- 6. An electrographic element according to claim 1 further comprising a transparent release layer between said carrier sheet and said dielectric image receptive layer.
- 7. An electrographic element according to claim 6 wherein the release layer is transparent and has a bonding force with the carrier sheet which is weaker than both the bonding force between the image receptive layer and the release layer and the bonding force between the adhesive layer and the image receptive layer whereby in step (d) following the separating and removing step, the release layer, the dielectric image receptive layer and the toned image remain on the substrate.
- 8. An electrographic element according to claim 6 wherein the release layer is conductive.
- 9. The element according to claim 6, wherein the release layer has a bonding force with the carrier sheet which is stronger than the bonding force between the dielectric layer and the adhesive layer after activation of the adhesive layer whereby in step (d) the release layer is removed from the dielectric layer and remains on the carrier sheet.
- 10. The element according to claim 9, wherein the release layer is non transparent.
- 11. The element according to claim 6 wherein the release layer has been coated onto the carrier sheet by hot melt extrusion.
- 12. The electrographic element according to claim 1 wherein the dielectric layer comprises a Polyvinyl Butyral, an Acrylic resin, and a Polystyrene.
- 13. An image formed on a permanent receptor substrate having a front surface, by a process comprising:
- (a) electrographically producing a toned mirror image of the image on an electrographic element comprising a transparent, releasable dielectric image receptive layer which becomes tacky at an adhesive activation temperature T.sub.Ad, supported on an electrically conductive carrier sheet, the toned image being on said transparent, image receptive releasable dielectric layer;
- (b) applying an adhesive coating on said substrate front surface the adhesive coating being tacky at a temperature T.sub.Aa less than adhesive activation temperature T.sub.Ad ;
- (c) Contacting the image receptive layer and the toned image thereon, to the adhesive layer and adhering the electrographic element to the substrate; and
- (d) Separating and removing the carrier sheet from the dielectric image receptive layer, whereby the dielectric image receptive layer and the toned image remain on the substrate.
- 14. The image formed by the process of claim 13 wherein the electrographic element further comprises a release layer coated between said dielectric layer and said conductive layer whereby in step (d) the release layer together with the dielectric image receptive layer and the toned image remain on the substrate.
- 15. The image formed by the process of claim 13 wherein the electrographic element comprises a transparent, releasable dielectric image receptive layer having a glass transition temperature T.sub.g and a conductive carrier sheet, the dielectric layer having a front image receptive surface and a back surface, the carrier sheet having a front surface, the dielectric layer being supported by the carrier layer, the back surface of the dielectric layer in contact with the front surface of the carrier layer, and wherein the carrier sheet front surface has a preselected texture, and such texture is imparted on the back surface of said dielectric layer, and wherein the toned image is created on the front surface of said transparent, image receptive releasable dielectric layer.
