Claims
- 1. A display element, comprising:a disk having a rotation axis generally transverse to a viewing direction, the disk having a bright side and an opposite dark side; means for rotating said disk between two limiting positions wherein the bright side or the dark side is displayed in the viewing direction; an illumination means individual to the element and having a radiation axis, said radiation axis being orientated transversely of the viewing direction, so that rays from said illumination means surrounding said radiation axis will directly illuminate one side of said disk when said one side is displayed in the viewing direction; and means for limiting the divergence of said rays away from the radiation axis.
- 2. A display element as claimed in claim 1 wherein said illumination means comprises a light emitting diode.
- 3. A display element as claimed in claim 2 wherein said disk rotates 160°-180° between limiting positions.
- 4. A display element as claimed in claim 2 wherein said rays illuminate the disk bright side.
- 5. A display element as claimed in claim 2 wherein said disk masks in the viewing direction radiation from said light emitting diode when the disk dark side is displayed in the viewing direction.
- 6. A display element as claimed in claim 1 wherein said disk rotates 160°-180° between limiting positions.
- 7. A display element as claimed in claim 1, wherein said illumination means comprises a light emitting diode chip and a lens, and wherein the means for limiting the divergence of said rays is a housing containing said diode chip and lens, the housing having an aperture to allow said rays to be radiated in a cone about said radiation axis so that, in one of said limiting positions the disk is illuminated by the rays.
- 8. A display element as claimed in claim 7 wherein said disk masks said housing aperture to the viewer when the disk dark side is displayed in the viewing direction.
- 9. A display element for selectively displaying a surface thereon in a direction of viewing, said display element comprising a rotor and a stator, said rotor comprising a disk having a bright surface on one side and a dark surface on the other side, said stator including means for moving said disk between a first position wherein said bright surface is oriented to be displayed in the direction of viewing and a second position wherein said bright surface is oriented so as not to be displayed in the direction of viewing, said means for moving including means on said stator for supporting said disk for movement about a rotational axis which extends approximately transversely to the direction of viewing, between said first and second positions, a light emitting diode individual to said element and mounted in the stator to direct rays about an illumination axis oriented transversely of the viewing direction to directly illuminate said bright surface when said disk is in said first position, and a housing containing the light emitting diode, the housing having an aperture to allow said rays to be emitted in a cone centered about said radiation axis.
- 10. A display element as claimed in claim 9 where said stator is square when viewed in the viewing direction.
- 11. A display element as claimed in claim 10 wherein said rotational axis is approximately diagonal relative to the stator.
- 12. A display element as claimed in claim 9 wherein said disk, in the second position, masks, in the viewing direction, radiation from said light emitting diode.
- 13. A display element for selectively displaying a surface thereof in a direction of viewing, said display element comprising: a rotor and a stator, said rotor comprising a disk having a bright surface on one side and a dark surface on the other side, said stator including means for moving said disk between an ON position wherein said bright surface is oriented to be displayed in the direction of viewing and an OFF position wherein said bright surface is oriented so as not to be displayed in the direction of viewing, means for supporting said disk for movement between ON and OFF positions about a rotational axis which extends approximately transverse to the direction of viewing, and a light emitting diode individual to said element mounted forwardly of at least a portion of said disk in the direction of viewing when said disk is in said ON position, said light emitting diode being oriented to emit light along a radiation axis which is transverse to the direction of viewing and which is directed generally at said bright surface of said disk when said disk is in said ON position.
- 14. A display element as claimed in claim 13 wherein said light emitting diode is contained in a housing.
- 15. A display element as claimed in claim 14 wherein said light emitting diode emits a cone of rays and wherein said housing acts as a shroud to limit the size of the cone of rays from said light emitting diode.
- 16. A display element as claimed in claim 15 wherein said disk rotates through an angle of between 160° and 180°.
- 17. A display element as claimed in claim 14 wherein said disk rotates through an angle of between 160° and 180°.
- 18. A display element as claimed in claim 13 wherein said light emitting diode is mounted on a printed circuit board.
- 19. A display element as claimed in claim 13 wherein said disk rotates through an angle of between 160° and 180°.
- 20. A display element as claimed in claim 13 wherein said disk, in the OFF position, masks, in the viewing direction, radiation from said light emitting diode.
