Claims
- 1. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a plurality of light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective colors; a background area adjacent to said display area, said background area including a plurality of light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective colors; a bus system to which said light emitting diodes are coupled in accordance with the location of said light emitting diodes either in said display segments or in said background area, and in accordance with their colors, for being forwardly biased upon selective activation of said bus system; and means for selectively activating said bus system for illuminating a selected display unit, on certain of said display segments, in a first selective color, and for illuminating said background area in a second selective color.
- 2. The display device of claim 1 wherein said background area is illuminated in a uniform color.
- 3. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a plurality of light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective colors; a background area adjacent to said display area, said background area including a plurality of light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective colors; a plurality of display buses to which said light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled in accordance with their colors, for being forwardly biased upon selective activation of said display buses; means for selectively activating said display buses for illuminating a selected display unit, on certain of said display segments, in a first selective color; a plurality of background buses to which said light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled in accordance with their colors, for being forwardly biased upon selective activation of said background buses; and means for selectively activating said background buses for illuminating said background area in a second selective color.
- 4. The display device of claim 3 wherein the number of said display buses is the same as the number of said background buses.
- 5. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a first light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a first color, a second light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a second color, and a third light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a third color; a background area adjacent to said display area, said background area including a plurality of light emitting diodes arranged in triads, each said triad including a first light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a first color, a second light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a second color, and a third light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a third color; a first display bus to which all said first light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon activation of said first display bus; a second display bus to which all said second light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon activation of said second display bus; a third display bus to which all said third light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon activation of said third display bus; means for selectively activating said first display bus, said second display bus, and said third display bus, for illuminating a selected display unit, on certain of said display segments, in a first selective color; a first background bus to which all said first light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon activation of said first background bus; a second background bus to which all said second light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon activation of said second background bus; a third background bus to which all said third light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon activation of said third background bus; and means for selectively activating said first background bus, said second background bus, and said third background bus, for illuminating said background area in a second selective color.
- 6. The display device of claim 5 wherein said first color in said display area is the same as said first color in said background area, said second color in said display area is the same as said second color in said background area, and said third color in said display area is the same as said third color in said background area.
- 7. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a plurality of light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective colors, said display area having a substantially flat top surface; a background area substantially surrounding said display area, said background area including a plurality of light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective colors, said background area having a substantially flat top surface aligned with said top surface of said display area; a plurality of display buses to which said light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled in accordance with their colors, for being forwardly biased upon selective activation of said display buses; a display color control for selectively activating said display buses for illuminating a selected display unit, on certain of said display segments, in a first selective color; a plurality of background buses to which said light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled in accordance with their colors, for being forwardly biased upon selective activation of said background buses; and a background color control for selectively activating said background buses for illuminating said background area in a second selective color.
- 8. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a first light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a first color, a second light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a second color, and a third light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a third color, said display area having a substantially flat top surface; a background area substantially surrounding said display area, said background area including a plurality of light emitting diodes arranged in triads, each said triad including a first light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a first color, a second light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a second color, and a third light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a third color, said background area having a substantially flat top surface aligned with said top surface of said display area; a first display bus to which all said first light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon activation of said first display bus; a second display bus to which all said second light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon activation of said second display bus; a third display bus to which all said third light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon activation of said third display bus; a display color control for selectively activating said first display bus, said second display bus, and said third display bus, for illuminating a selected display unit, on certain of said display segments, in a first selective color; a first background bus to which all said first light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon activation of said first background bus; a second background bus to which all said second light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon activation of said second background bus; a third background bus to which all said third light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon activation of said third background bus; and a background color control for selectively activating said first background bus, said second background bus, and said third background bus, for illuminating said background area in a second selective color.
- 9. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a plurality of display light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective display colors; a background area adjacent to said display area, said background area including a plurality of background light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective background colors; a bus system for distributing display color control signals to said display light emitting diodes, in accordance with said display colors, and for distributing background color control signals to said background light emitting diodes, in accordance with said background colors; and means for selectively activating said bus system for illuminating a selected display unit, on certain of said display segments, in a first selective color, and for illuminating said background area in a second selective color.
- 10. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a plurality of display light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective display colors; a background area adjacent to said display area, said background area including a plurality of background light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective background colors; a plurality of display buses, equal in number to the number of said display colors, for distributing display color control signals to said display light emitting diodes, in accordance with their colors, for forwardly biasing said display light emitting diodes; means for selectively applying said color control signals to said display buses, for illuminating a selected display unit, on certain of said display segments, in a first selective color; a plurality of background buses, equal in number to the number of said background colors, for distributing background color control signals to said background light emitting diodes, in accordance with their colors, for forwardly biasing said background light emitting diodes; means for selectively applying said background color control signals to said background buses, for illuminating said background area in a second selective color.
- 11. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a first light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a first color, a second light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a second color, and a third light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a third color; a background area adjacent to said display area, said background area including a plurality of light emitting diodes arranged in triads, each said triad including a first light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a first color, a second light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a second color, and a third light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a third color; a first display bus for distributing a first display color control signal to said first light emitting diodes in said display segments, for forwardly biasing them when said first display color control signal is applied to said first display bus; a second display bus for distributing a second display color control signal to said second light emitting diodes in said display segments, for forwardly biasing them when said second display color control signal is applied to said second display bus; a third display bus for distributing a third display color control signal to said third light emitting diodes in said display segments, for forwardly biasing them when said third display color control signal is applied to said third display bus; means for selectively applying said first display color control signal to said first display bus, said second display color control signal to said second display bus, and said third display color control signal to said third display bus, for illuminating a selected display unit, on certain of said display segments, in a first selective color; a first background bus for distributing a first background color control signal to said first light emitting diodes in said background area, for forwardly biasing them when said first background color control signal is applied to said first background bus; a second background bus for distributing a second background color control signal to said second light emitting diodes in said background area, for forwardly biasing them when said second background color control signal is applied to said second background bus; a third background bus for distributing a third background color control signal to said third light emitting diodes in said background area, for forwardly biasing them when said third background color control signal is applied to said third background bus; means for selectively applying said first background color control signal to said first background bus, said second background color control signal to said second background bus, and said third background color control signal to said third background bus, for illuminating said background area in a second selective color.
- 12. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a plurality of display light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective display colors, said display area having a substantially flat top surface; a background area substantially surrounding said display area, said background area including a plurality of background light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective background colors, said background area having a substantially flat top surface aligned with said top surface of said display area; a plurality of display buses, equal in number to the number of said display colors, for distributing display color control signals to said display light emitting diodes, in accordance with their colors, for forwardly biasing said display light emitting diodes; a display color control for selectively applying said display color control signals to said display buses for illuminating a selected display unit, on certain of said display segments, in a first selective color; a plurality of background buses, equal in number to the number of said background colors, for distributing background color control signals to said background light emitting diodes, in accordance with their colors, for forwardly biasing said background light emitting diodes; and a background color control for selectively applying said color control signals to said background buses for illuminating said background area in a second selective color.
- 13. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a first light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a first color, a second light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a second color, and a third light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a third color, said display area having a substantially flat top surface; a background area substantially surrounding said display area, said background area including a plurality of light emitting diodes arranged in triads, each said triad including a first light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a first color, a second light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a second color, and a third light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a third color, said background area having a substantially flat top surface aligned with said top surface of said display area; a first display bus for distributing a first display color control signal to said first light emitting diodes in said display segments, for forwardly biasing them when said first display color control signal is applied to said first display bus; a second display bus for distributing a second display color control signal to said second light emitting diodes in said display segments, for forwardly biasing them when said second display color control signal is applied to said second display bus; a third display bus for distributing a third display color control signal to said third light emitting diodes in said display segments, for forwardly biasing them when said third display color control signal is applied to said third display bus; a display color control for selectively applying said first display color control signal to said first display bus, said second display color control signal to said second display bus, and said third display color control signal to said third display bus, for illuminating a selected display unit, on certain of said display segments, in a first selective color; a first background bus for distributing a first background color control signal to said first light emitting diodes in said background area, for forwardly biasing them when said first background color control signal is applied to said first background bus; a second background bus for distributing a second background color control signal to said second light emitting diodes in said background area, for forwardly biasing them when said second background color control signal is applied to said second background bus; a third background bus for distributing a third background color control signal to said second light emitting diodes in said background area, for forwardly biasing them when said third background color control signal is applied to said third background bus; a background color control for selectively applying said first background color control signal to said first background bus, said second background color control signal to said second background bus, and said third background color control signal to said third background bus, for illuminating said background area in a second selective color.
- 14. The display device of claim 13 wherein:
said first display bus, said second display bus, and said third display bus include respective display color control inputs for receiving said first display color control signal, said second display color control signal, and said third display color control signal; said display color control applies said display color control signals to said display color control inputs, respectively; said first background bus, said second background bus, and said third background bus include respective background color control inputs for receiving said first background color control signal, said second background color control signal, and said third background color control signal; and said background color control applies said background color control signals to said background color control inputs, respectively.
- 15. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a plurality of light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective colors; a background area adjacent to said display area, said background area including a plurality of light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective colors; a plurality of display buses to which said light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled in accordance with their colors, for being forwardly biased upon selective application of display color control signals to said display buses; means for selectively applying said display color control signals to said display buses for illuminating a selected display unit, on certain of said display segments, in a first selective color; a plurality of background buses to which said light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled in accordance with their colors, for being forwardly biased upon selective application of background color control signals to said background buses; and means for selectively applying said background color control signals to said background buses for illuminating said background area in a second selective color.
- 16. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a first light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a first color, a second light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a second color, and a third light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a third color; a background area adjacent to said display area, said background area including a plurality of light emitting diodes arranged in triads, each said triad including a first light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a first color, a second light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a second color, and a third light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a third color; a first display bus to which all said first light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon application of a first display color control signal to said first display bus; a second display bus to which all said second light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon application of a second display color control signal to said second display bus; a third display bus to which all said third light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon application of a third display color control signal to said third display bus; means for selectively applying said first display color control signal to said first display bus, said second display color control signal to said second display bus, and said third display color control signal to said third display bus, for illuminating a selected display unit, on certain of said display segments, in a first selective color; a first background bus to which all said first light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon application of a first background color control signal to said first background bus; a second background bus to which all said second light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon application of a second background color control signal to said second background bus; a third background bus to which all said third light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled, for being forwardly biased upon application of a third background color control signal to said third background bus; and means for selectively applying said first background color control signal to said first background bus, said second background color control signal to said second background bus, and said third background color control signal to said third background bus, for illuminating said background area in a second selective color.
- 17. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a plurality of light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective colors, said display area having a substantially flat top surface; a background area substantially surrounding said display area, said background area including a plurality of light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective colors, said background area having a substantially flat top surface aligned with said top surface of said display area; a plurality of display buses to which said light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled in accordance with their colors, each said display bus having a display color control input, responsive to a display color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said light emitting diodes coupled to said display bus when said display color control signal is active; a display color control for selectively applying active display color control signals to said display color control inputs for illuminating a selected display unit, on certain of said display segments, in a first selective color; a plurality of background buses to which said light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled in accordance with their colors, each said background bus having a background color control input, responsive to a background color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said light emitting diodes coupled to said background bus when said background color control signal is active; a background color control for selectively applying active background color control signals to said background color control inputs for illuminating said background area in a uniform color different from said first selective color.
- 18. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a first light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a first color, a second light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a second color, and a third light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a third color, said display area having a substantially flat top surface; a background area substantially surrounding said display area, said background area including a plurality of light emitting diodes arranged in triads, each said triad including a first light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a first color, a second light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a second color, and a third light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a third color, said background area having a substantially flat top surface aligned with said top surface of said display area; a first display bus to which all said first light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled, said first display bus having a first display color control input, responsive to a first display color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said first light emitting diodes when said first display color control signal is active; a second display bus to which all said second light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled, said second display bus having a second display color control input, responsive to a second display color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said second light emitting diodes when said second display color control signal is active; a third display bus to which all said third light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled, said third display bus having a third display color control input, responsive to a third display color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said third light emitting diodes when said third display color control signal is active; a display color control for applying a first display color control signal to said first display color control input, a second display color control signal to said second display color control input, and a third display color control signal to said third display color control input, one of said display color control signals being active, for illuminating a selected display unit, on certain of said display segments, in a first selective color; a first background bus to which all said first light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled, said first background bus having a first background color control input, responsive to a first background color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said first light emitting diodes when said first background color control signal is active; a second background bus to which all said second light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled, said second background bus having a second background color control input, responsive to a second background color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said second light emitting diodes when said second background color control signal is active; a third background bus to which all said third light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled, said third background bus having a third background color control input, responsive to a third background color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said third light emitting diodes when said third background color control signal is active; a background color control for applying a first background color control signal to said first background color control input, a second background color control signal to said second background color control input, and a third background color control signal to said third background color control input, one of said background color control signals being active, for illuminating said background area in a uniform color different from said first selective color.
- 19. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a plurality of display light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective colors, said display area having a substantially flat top surface; a background area substantially surrounding said display area, said background area including a plurality of background light emitting diodes for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of respective colors, said background area having a substantially flat top surface aligned with said top surface of said display area; said colors of said display light emitting diodes being respectively the same as said colors of said background light emitting diodes; a plurality of display buses to which said light emitting diodes in said display segments are commonly coupled in accordance with their colors, each said display bus having a display color control input, responsive to a display color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said light emitting diodes coupled to said display bus when said display color control signal is active; a plurality of background buses to which said light emitting diodes in said background area are commonly coupled in accordance with their colors, each said background bus having a background color control input, responsive to a background color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said light emitting diodes coupled to said background bus when said background color control signal is active; wherein the number of said display buses is the same as the number of said background buses; a display color control for applying to said display color control inputs a selective combination of display color control signals, one of them being active, for causing the corresponding display light emitting diodes to illuminate; a background color control for applying to said background color control inputs a selective combination of background color control signals, one of them being active, for causing the corresponding background light emitting diodes to illuminate; wherein the active display color control signal is for a different color than the active background color control signal.
- 20. A display device comprising:
a display area including a plurality of display segments arranged in a pattern for selectively exhibiting a plurality of display units, each said display segment including a first display light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a first color, a second display light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a second color, and a third display light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a third color, said display area having a substantially flat top surface; a background area substantially surrounding said display area, said background area including a plurality of light emitting diodes arranged in triads, each said triad including a first background light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a first color, a second background light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a second color, and a third background light emitting diode for emitting, when forwardly biased, light signals of a third color, said background area having a substantially flat top surface aligned with said top surface of said display area; a first display bus to which all said first display light emitting diodes are commonly coupled, said first display bus having a first display color control input, responsive to a first display color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said first display light emitting diodes when said first display color control signal is active; a second display bus to which all said second display light emitting diodes are commonly coupled, said second display bus having a second display color control input, responsive to a second display color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said second display light emitting diodes when said second display color control signal is active; a third display bus to which all said third display light emitting diodes are commonly coupled, said third display bus having a third display color control input, responsive to a third display color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said third display light emitting diodes when said third display color control signal is active; a display color control for applying to said first display color control input, to said second display color control input, and to said third display color control input a selective combination of display color control signals, wherein one of them is active, for causing the corresponding display light emitting diodes to illuminate; a first background bus to which all said first background light emitting diodes are commonly coupled, said first background bus having a first background color control input, responsive to a first background color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said first background light emitting diodes when said first background color control signal is active; a second background bus to which all said second background light emitting diodes are commonly coupled, said second background bus having a second background color control input, responsive to a second background color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said second background light emitting diodes when said second background color control signal is active; a third background bus to which all said third background light emitting diodes are commonly coupled, said third background bus having a third background color control input, responsive to a third background color control signal, for forwardly biasing all said third background light emitting diodes when said third background color control signal is active; a background color control for selectively applying to said first background color control input, to said second background color control input, and to said third background color control input a selective combination of background color control signals, wherein one of them is active, for causing the corresponding background light emitting diodes to illuminate; wherein the active display color control signal is for a different color than the active background color control signal.
