Claims
- 1. A method of applying a powder coating to a part, the part moving with respect to the plurality of powder spray guns, the method comprising the steps of:
- storing a plurality of sets of gun operating parameters in each of a plurality of gun controls, each of the plurality of gun controls operating a respective one of the plurality of powder spray guns;
- detecting the part;
- selecting with at least one of the plurality of gun controls one of the plurality of sets of gun operating parameters as a function of detecting the part; and
- determining with the one of the plurality of gun controls when to selectively trigger the respective one of the plurality of powder spray guns ON and OFF in accordance with the one of the plurality of sets of gun operating parameters to apply a powder coating to the part.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the method further comprises iterating the steps of detecting, selecting and determining as a function of others of the parts moving with respect to the plurality of powder spray guns.
- 3. A method of claim 1 further comprising:
- producing automatically system signals in response to the part moving with respect to the powder spray gun;
- initiating a flow of a cleaning fluid through the powder spray gun in response to the system signals representing motion of the part to a first position with respect to the powder spray gun;
- terminating the flow of the cleaning fluid through the powder spray gun in response to system signals representing motion of the part to a second position with respect to the spray gun;
- initiating automatically a flow of powder through the powder spray gun after terminating the flow of cleaning fluid through the part, thereby applying the powder to the part; and
- terminating the flow of the powder through the powder spray gun in response to system signals representing motion of the part to a third position with respect to the spray gun.
- 4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:
- producing automatically system signals in response to the part moving with respect to the powder spray guns;
- initiating automatically a flow of powder through one of the powder spray guns in response to the system signals representing motion of the part to a first position with respect to the one of the powder spray guns, thereby applying the powder to the part;
- terminating the flow of the powder through the one of the powder spray guns in response to the system signals representing motion of the part to a second position with respect to the one of the spray guns;
- initiating automatically a flow of a cleaning fluid through the one of the powder spray guns after terminating the flow of powder through the one of the powder spray guns; and
- terminating automatically the flow of the cleaning fluid through the one of the powder spray guns.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the step of terminating automatically the flow of the cleaning fluid further comprises the step of terminating automatically the flow of the cleaning fluid after a period of time.
- 6. The method of claim 4 wherein the step of terminating automatically the flow of the cleaning fluid further comprises the step of terminating automatically the flow of the cleaning fluid in response to system signals representing motion of the part to a third position with respect to the one of the powder spray gun.
- 7. The method of claim 4 wherein the cleaning fluid is pressurized air.
- 8. The method of claim 3 wherein the powder spray gun is a tribo gun and the cleaning fluid is pressurized air.
- 9. A method of operating a powder coating control system for bringing selected ones of a plurality of gun controls on-line with a system control, each of the gun controls being connected to one of a plurality of powder spray guns disposed with respect to a part and operating the one of the plurality of powder spray guns to apply a powder coating to the part, each of the plurality of gun controls having a selectable address code and a nonselectable identification code, and the system control providing data to and receiving data from the plurality of gun controls and having a memory for storing the selectable address codes and the nonselectable identification codes for the plurality of gun controls, the method comprising the steps of:
- transmitting a sign-on message from each of the selected ones of the plurality of gun controls to the system control, the sign-on message including a respective selectable address code and a respective nonselectable identification code, and
- sending an on-line message from the system control to each of the selected ones of the plurality of gun controls in response to the system control having previously stored in memory a selectable address code and a nonselectable identification code corresponding to the selectable address code and the nonselectable identification code in the sign-on message.
- 10. The method of claim 9 further comprising the step of writing the nonselectable identification code in the sign-on message into the memory of the system control in response to a first occurrence of the sign-on message and the selectable address code in the sign-on message previously being stored in the memory.
- 11. The method of claim 9 further comprising the step of writing the nonselectable identification code into the memory of the system control in response to the selectable address code in the sign-on message previously being previously stored in the memory but the nonselectable identification code in the sign-on message not being previously stored in the memory.
- 12. The method of claim 9 further comprising the step of writing into the memory of the system control the selectable address code and the nonselectable identification code in the sign-on message in response their not being previously stored in the memory.
- 13. A method of applying powder coatings to parts as a function of the parts moving with respect to the plurality of powder spray guns, the method comprising the steps of:
- storing a plurality of sets of powder spray parameters in a plurality of gun controls, each of the plurality of gun controls operating a respective one of the plurality of powder spray guns, each set of powder spray parameters comprising a set of operating parameters for a respective powder spray gun to apply a powder coating to a part;
- producing a part identification code as a function of a physical characteristic of one of the parts moving with respect to a sensor;
- transmitting the part identification code to the plurality of gun controls;
- selecting with at least one of the plurality of gun controls one of the plurality of sets of powder spray parameters associated with the part identification code; and
- determining with the one of the plurality of gun controls when to selectively trigger the respective one of the plurality of powder spray guns ON and OFF in accordance with the one of the plurality of sets of powder spray parameters to apply a powder coating to the one of the parts.
- 14. A method of applying a powder coating to a part moving with respect to the plurality of powder spray guns, the method comprises the steps of:
- storing a plurality of sets of powder spray parameters in a plurality of gun controls, each of the gun controls operating a respective one of the plurality of powder spray guns, each set of powder spray parameters comprising a set of operating parameters for one of the plurality of powder spray guns to apply a powder coating to the part;
- providing first signals representing incremental displacements of motion of the part;
- detecting a physical characteristic of the part;
- producing a part identification code as a function of the physical characteristic of the part;
- transmitting the first signals and the part identification code to the plurality of gun controls;
- selecting with at least one the plurality of gun controls one of the plurality of sets of powder spray parameters in response to the first signals and the part identification code;
- determining with the one of the plurality of gun controls when to selectively trigger the respective one of the plurality of powder spray guns ON and OFF in accordance with the one of the plurality of sets of powder spray parameters to apply a powder coating on the part; and
- iterating the steps of providing, detecting, producing, transmitting, selecting and operating to select different ones of the plurality of powder spray guns in accordance with different ones of the plurality of sets of powder spray parameters as a function of motion of the part with respect to the plurality of powder spray guns and different physical characteristics of the part.
