Claims
- 1. An air bag module (20) comprising:
a base plate (30); a toroidal air bag (80) defining a pocket (120), said toroidal air bag (80) being coupled to the base plate (30); and a control module (40) disposed within said pocket (120).
- 2. The module according to claim 1 wherein the control module (40) defines a base (82) and a generally cylindrical portion (86) coupled to the base (82), the control module (40) having a control module cover (90) coupled to said generally cylindrical portion (86).
- 3. The module according to claim 2 wherein said base (82) defines an anti-rotation mechanism (102), said anti-rotation mechanism (102) comprises a retractable member (103) which is configured to couple with notch (83) defined in the cove.
- 4. The module according to claim 3 wherein the notch (83) defines a ramp.
- 5. The module according to claim 3 wherein the retractable member (103) is spring biased in a locking position.
- 6. The module according to claim 2 wherein the cylindrical portion (86) defines a locking mechanism configured to couple the control module cover (90) to the cylindrical portion (86).
- 7. The module according to claim 6 wherein the locking mechanism comprises a locking flange (92), said locking flange (92) being configured to couple to a slot (94) defined in the cover 90.
- 8. The module according to claim 7 wherein the locking slot (94) is L-shaped.
- 9. The module according to claim 1 including an inflator (62) disposed between control module (40) and the base plate (30).
- 10. The module according to claim 2 further comprising a module cover (140), the module cover (140) defining an aperture (146), said aperture being configured to receive the control module cover (90).
- 11. The module according to claim 2 further comprising an electronics module (105) disposed within the control module (40).
- 12. The module defined in claim 11 wherein the electronics module (105) is an anti-theft module (107), the anti-theft module (107) having a processor configured to receive signals indicative of a vehicle identification number upon startup of the vehicle.
- 13. The module according to claim 12 wherein the anti-theft module comprises a processor module (108) which is configured to retrieve a specific identity code upon the coupling of the module to a vehicle, said processor module (108) further configured to store the identity code with a memory storage location (109).
- 14. The module according to claim 12 wherein the anti-theft module having a display configured to transmit a signal indicative of a stolen module.
- 15. An air bag module comprising:
a base plate (30); a toroidal air bag (80) defining a pocket, said toroidal air bag (80) being coupled to the base plate (30); a control module (40) having a base plate portion (82) and a generally cylindrical portion (86) coupled to the base plate portion (92), the control module (40) having a control module cover (90) coupled to said generally cylindrical portion (86).
- 16. The air bag module according to claim 15 wherein the control module (40) defines an anti-rotation mechanism (102), said anti-rotation mechanism (102) comprises a retractable flange (103) which functions to prevent rotation of the control module cover (90).
- 17. The module according to claim 15 wherein the cylindrical portion (86) defines a locking mechanism configured to couple the control module cover (90) to the cylindrical portion (86).
- 18. The module according to claim 17 wherein the locking mechanism comprises a locking flange (92), said locking flange (92) being configured to couple to a locking slot (94) defined in the cover (90).
- 19. The module according to claim 18 wherein the locking slot (94) is L-shaped.
- 20. The module according to claim 15 further comprising an electronics module (105) disposed within the control module.
- 21. The module defined in claim 20 wherein the electronics module (105) is selected from the group of a horn switch, a visual display, lights, a GPS, a cellular phone, vehicle gages, a radio, radio controls, an occupant sensor and an anti-theft device.
- 22. A steering wheel assembly comprising:
a base plate (30) with at least one cover retaining flange (26); a cover (140) defining a retaining aperture (34) configured to receive the cover retaining flange (26); a steering wheel armature (14), wherein the cover (140) is disposed adjacent to the cover retaining flange (26) and; a control module (40) having a base plate portion (82) and a generally cylindrical portion (86) coupled to the base plate portion (92), the control module (40) having a control module cover (90) coupled to said generally cylindrical portion (86).
- 23. The steering wheel assembly of claim 22 wherein the cover (16) defines at least one slot (24) for receipt of the cover retaining flange (26).
- 24. The steering wheel assembly of claim 22 wherein the base plate (30) and the cover (140) define a central opening (50).
- 25. A steering wheel assembly comprising:
a base plate (30) having a plurality of retaining flanges (26); a steering wheel armature (14) defining a plurality of slots (24) for receipt of the flanges (26); a cover (140) including a plurality of retaining apertures (34) for receipt of the plurality of flanges (26) therethrough; and a control module (40) having a base plate portion (82) and a generally cylindrical portion (86) coupled to the base plate portion (92), the control module (40) having a control module cover (90) coupled to said generally cylindrical portion (86); wherein said cover (140) is at least partially between said base plate 30 and said steering wheel armature (14).
