- 1. A dye having the formula:

- 4. The dye according to claim 1, wherein n=1, R1=H, R2=R=CH2CH2OAc, X=S, and B− is Br−.
- 5. The dye according to claim 2, wherein n=1; X=S; R1=CH2CH2OH; R2=R4=R5=H; R3=CO.CH3; and B− is Br−.
- 6. The dye according to claim 2, wherein n=1; X=S; R1=CH2CH2OH; R2=R4=R5=H; R3=CO.CH3; and B− is Br−.
- 7. The dye according to claim 2, wherein n=1; X=S; R1=CH2CH2OH; R2=R3=R4=R5=H; and B− is Br−.
- 8. The dye according to claim 2, wherein n=1; X=S; R1=CH2CH2OH; R2=R3=R4=H; R5=B(OH)2; and B− is I−.
- 9. A dye composition for staining blood cells comprising the compound of claim 1, wherein the blood cells are nucleated red blood cells.
- 10. A dye composition for staining blood cells comprising the compound of claim 2, wherein the blood cells are nucleated red blood cells.
- 11. A dye composition for staining blood cells comprising the compound of claim 1, wherein the blood cells are reticulocytes.
- 12. A dye composition for staining blood cells comprising the compound of claim 2, wherein the blood cells are reticulocytes.
- 13. The dye composition for staining reticulocytes according to claim 9, further comprising a surfactant.
- 14. The dye composition according to claim 1, further comprising a detergent in an amount of about 0% up to about 1%.
- 15. The dye composition for staining reticulocytes according to claim 2, further comprising a surfactant.
- 16. The dye composition according to claim 2, further comprising a detergent in an amount of about 0% up to about 1%.
- 17. The dye composition according to claim 1, further comprising a sulfonic acid or a salt thereof.
- 18. The dye composition according to claim 2, further comprising a sulfonic acid or a salt thereof.
- 19. A method for staining nucleic acid comprising the step of contacting a blood cell sample containing nucleic acid with the dye according to claim 1.
- 20. The method according to claim 19, wherein said blood cell sample is contacted by the dye in the presence of a surfactant.
- 21. The method according to claim 20, wherein said blood cell sample is contacted by the dye after lysing mature red blood cells and reticulocytes, but preserving nucleated red blood cells in the blood cells sample.
- 22. The method according to claim 21, wherein the mixture of the blood cell sample and dye is incubated for up to about one minute.
- 23. A method for analysis of reticulocytes comprising the steps of:
(a) contacting a blood cell sample containing reticulocytes with a compound according to claim 1 such that the reticulocytes are stained by the said compound; and (b) analyzing the stained reticulocytes by flow cytometry to detect the presence of reticulocytes.
- 24. The method according to claim 23, wherein said analysis by flow cytometry includes measurement of one fluorescence parameter and at least one parameter selected from the group consisting of light scatter, axial light loss, DC electrical impedance, and radio frequency (RF) conductivity and combinations thereof.
- 25. A method for staining nucleic acid comprising the step of contacting a blood cell sample containing nucleic acid with the dye according to claim 2.
- 26. The method according to claim 25, wherein said blood cell sample is contacted by the dye in the presence of a surfactant.
- 27. The method according to claim 26, wherein said blood cell sample is contacted by the dye after lysing mature red blood cells and reticulocytes, but preserving nucleated red blood cells in the blood cells sample.
- 28. The method according to claim 27, wherein the mixture of the blood cell sample and dye is incubated for up to about one minute.
- 29. A method for analysis of reticulocytes comprising the steps of:
(a) contacting a blood cell sample containing reticulocytes with a compound according to claim 2 such that the reticulocytes are stained by the said compound; and (b) analyzing the stained reticulocytes by flow cytometry to detect the presence of reticulocytes.
- 30. The method according to claim 29, wherein said analysis by flow cytometry includes measurement of one fluorescence parameter and at least one parameter selected from the group consisting of light scatter, axial light loss, DC electrical impedance, and radio frequency (RF) conductivity and combinations thereof.
