Claims
- 1. A method of fabricating an organic light-emitting device, comprising the steps of: forming a first electrode over a substrate; forming over the first electrode at least one layer of organic material including at least one light-emitting organic layer; forming over the at least one layer of organic material an uppermost layer of organic material that is more resistant to sputter deposition than an underlying layer of organic material; and forming a second electrode over the uppermost layer of organic material; wherein the second electrode comprises at least one layer, the layer adjacent the uppermost layer of organic material being a sputtered layer.
- 2. A method of fabricating an organic light-emitting device according to claim 1, wherein the step of forming the second electrode comprises the steps of sputtering a first layer of conductive material having a low work function over the uppermost layer of organic material and sputtering a second layer of conductive material over the first layer of conductive material, the first layer of conductive material being substantially thinner than the second layer of conductive material.
- 3. A method of fabricating an organic light-emitting device according to claim 2, wherein the first layer of conductive material has a thickness of at most 20 nm.
- 4. A method of fabricating an organic light-emitting device according to claim 3, wherein the step of forming the second electrode comprises the steps of sputtering a first layer of conductive material having a high work function over the uppermost layer of organic material and sputtering a second layer of conductive material over the first layer of conductive material, the first layer of conductive material being substantially thinner than the second layer of conductive material.
- 5. A method of fabricating an organic light-emitting device according to claim 4, wherein the first layer of conductive material has a thickness of less than 10 nm.
- 6. A method of fabricating an organic light-emitting device according to claim 1, wherein the uppermost layer of organic material is a conjugated polymer.
- 7. A method of fabricating an organic light-emitting device according to claim 2, wherein the uppermost layer of organic material is selected from the group consisting of:a) poly (p-phenylene vinylene) or a copolymer thereof; b) poly (thienylene vinylene), poly (p-phenylene) or poly (naphthylene vinylene); c) polyquinoline, polyquinoxaline, polyhydrazine, polypyridine or poly-naphthylpyridine, or a copolymer thereof; d) polyazomethine; e) poly-pyridyl-vinylene or a copolymer thereof; f) an oxadiazole polymer or a copolymer thereof; g) a rigid rod or a ladder-like polymer; and h) a conducting polymer.
- 8. A method of fabricating an organic light-emitting device according to claim 7, wherein the uppermost layer of organic material is a) or b) with non-conjugated sections.
- 9. A method fabricating an organic light-emitting device according to claim 4, wherein the uppermost layer of organic material is f) and is polybenzobisoxazole (PBO) or polybenzobisthiazole (PBT).
- 10. A method of fabricating an organic light-emitting device according to claim 4, wherein the uppermost layer of organic materials is h) and is polyaniline, polyethylenedioxythiophene or doped poly (p-phenylene vinylene).
- 11. A method of fabricating an organic light-emitting device according to any of claims 7-10, wherein the underlying layer of organic material is a conjugated polymer.
- 12. A method of fabricating an organic light-emitting device according to any of claims 9 to 10, wherein the underlying layer of organic material is a soluble derivative of poly (p-phenylene vinylene) with di-alkoxy side chains.
- 13. A method of fabricating an organic light-emitting device according to claim 12, wherein the underlying layer of organic material is poly [2-methoxy, 5-(2′-ethyl-hexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene].
- 14. A method of fabricating an organic light-emitting device according to any of claims 7 to 10, wherein the underlying layer of organic material is a low molecular weight compound.
- 15. A method of fabricating an organic light-emitting device according to any of claims 7 to 10, wherein the uppermost layer of organic material is substantially thinner than the total thickness of the underlying layer or layers of organic material.
