Claims
- 1. A refrigeration system comprising:
- a sorber having a metallic tubular housing defining an outer conductor and first and second ends which are sealed to define an enclosure within the outer conductor;
- a sorbate/sorbent compound located within the enclosure;
- the sorber including at least one port through which a sorbate may be communicated into and out of the enclosure;
- a metallic inner conductor extending into the outer conductor and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the sorber;
- means for coupling the inner and outer conductors to an electromagnetic wave generator;
- wherein electromagnetic waves transmitted by the electromagnetic wave generator are propagated through the enclosure by the inner and outer conductors to desorb the sorbate from the sorbate/sorbent compound;
- a condenser connected to the port downstream of the sorber;
- an evaporator connected between the condenser and the port; and
- a controllable valve interposed between the condenser and the evaporator;
- wherein sorbate which is desorbed in the sorber is condensed in the condenser and then controllably released into the evaporator to create a cooling effect, after which it is drawn back into the sorber.
- 2. A refrigeration system capable of providing cooling during at least a portion of a repeatable refrigeration cycle, the refrigeration system comprising:
- at least one sorber having a housing forming an enclosure;
- a sorbent located within the enclosure;
- wherein the sorber includes at least one port through which a sorbate may be communicated to the sorbent;
- wherein the sorbate is adsorbed by the sorbent to form a sorbate/sorbent compound;
- an electromagnetic wave generator coupled to the sorber for providing electromagnetic waves to the sorber;
- wherein during a desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle electromagnetic waves transmitted by the electromagnetic wave generator are propagated through the enclosure to desorb the sorbate from the sorbate/sorbent compound;
- wherein the sorbate/sorbent compound is not heated by the electromagnetic waves to a degree sufficient to thermally desorb the sorbate from the sorbate/sorbent compound;
- a condenser connected to the sorber;
- an evaporator connected between the condenser and the port; and
- a controllable valve interposed between the condenser and the evaporator;
- wherein sorbate which is desorbed in the sorber is condensed in the condenser and then, during an adsorb portion of the refrigeration cycle, controllably evaporated in the evaporator to create a cooling effect and drawn back into the sorber;
- a controller coupled to the electromagnetic wave generator and the valve for controlling the operation of the electromagnetic wave generator and the valve in response to preprogrammed instructions;
- wherein the desorb and adsorb portions of the refrigeration cycle may be selectively regulated to provide a desired cooling effect.
- 3. The refrigeration system of claim 2, wherein the sorber comprises a hollow outer conductor and an inner conductor extending coaxially into the outer conductor, the inner and outer conductors being sized and spaced to form a waveguide for the electromagnetic waves.
- 4. A refrigeration system capable of providing cooling during at least a portion of a repeatable refrigeration cycle, the refrigeration system comprising:
- at least one sorber having a housing forming an enclosure;
- a sorbent located within the enclosure;
- an evaporator in fluid communication with the enclosure;
- wherein a sorbate is evaporated in the evaporator to provide a cooling effect and then adsorbed by the sorbent;
- an electromagnetic wave generator coupled to the sorber;
- wherein during a desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle the sorbate is desorbed from the sorbent by the electromagnetic waves generated by the electromagnetic wave generator;
- wherein the desorption of the sorbate from the sorbent is primarily isothermal; and
- a controller for controlling the operation of the electromagnetic wave generator;
- wherein the electromagnetic wave generator is selectively activated and deactivated to initiate and terminate, respectively, the desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle.
- 5. The refrigeration system of claim 4 further comprising a condenser in fluid communication with both the enclosure and the evaporator, wherein during the desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle, the sorbate is condensed in the condenser after being desorbed from the sorbent.
- 6. The refrigeration system of claim 5, further comprising:
- a power regulator responsive to the controller for regulating the power transmitted to the electromagnetic wave generator from a source of electrical power;
- wherein the power transmitted to the electromagnetic wave generator is gradually increased to initiate the desorption of the sorbate from the sorbent and thereby increasing pressure in the enclosure at the beginning of that the desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle.
- 7. The refrigeration system of claim 6, wherein the power regulator comprises a mosfet.
- 8. The refrigeration system of claim 5, further comprising:
- a temperature sensor connected to the controller and configured to sense the temperature of the electromagnetic wave generator;
- wherein the electromagnetic wave generator is deactivated to thereby terminate the desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle when the temperature rises by a predetermined amount.
- 9. The refrigeration system of claim 5, further comprising:
- a controllable valve in fluid communication with the evaporator and responsive to the controller;
- wherein the evaporation of the sorbate is controlled by the controller.
- 10. The refrigeration system of claim 9, wherein the controller actuates the valve prior to the initiation of the desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle to thereby increase the pressure in the enclosure at the beginning of the desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle.
- 11. A refrigeration system capable of providing cooling during at least a portion of a repeatable refrigeration cycle, the refrigeration system comprising:
- at least one sorber having a housing forming an enclosure;
- a sorbent located within the enclosure;
- an evaporator in fluid communication with the enclosure;
- a condenser in fluid communication with both the enclosure and the evaporator;
- wherein a sorbate is evaporated in the evaporator to provide a cooling effect and then adsorbed by the sorbent;
- an electromagnetic wave generator coupled to the sorber;
- wherein during a desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle the sorbate is desorbed from the sorbent by the electromagnetic waves and then condensed in the condenser;
- a controller for controlling the operation of the electromagnetic wave generator;
- wherein the electromagnetic wave generator is selectively activated and deactivated to initiate and terminate, respectively, the desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle; and
- a power regulator coupled to the electromagnetic wave generator, the controller and a source of electrical power, wherein the power regulator is configured to regulate power transmitted to the electromagnetic wave generator from the source of electrical power in response to the controller;
- wherein the power transmitted to the electromagnetic wave generator is gradually increased to initiate the desorption of the sorbate from the sorbent and thereby increase the pressure in the enclosure at the beginning of the desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle.
- 12. The refrigeration system of claim 11, wherein the power regulator comprises a mosfet.
- 13. A refrigeration system capable of providing cooling during at least a portion of a repeatable refrigeration cycle, the refrigeration system comprising:
- at least one sorber having a housing forming an enclosure;
- a sorbent located within the enclosure;
- an evaporator in fluid communication with the enclosure;
- a condenser in fluid communication with both the enclosure and the evaporator;
- wherein a sorbate is evaporated in the evaporator to provide the cooling effect and then adsorbed by the sorbent;
- a electromagnetic wave generator coupled to the sorber;
- wherein during a desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle the sorbate is desorbed from the sorbent by the electromagnetic waves generated by the electromagnetic wave generator and then condensed in the condenser;
- a controller for controlling the operation of the electromagnetic wave generator;
- wherein the electromagnetic wave generator is selectively activated and deactivated to initiate and terminate, respectively, the desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle; and
- a controllable valve in fluid communication with the evaporator and responsive to the controller;
- wherein the evaporation of the sorbate is controlled by the controller and wherein the controller actuates the valve prior to the initiation of the desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle to thereby increase the pressure in the enclosure at the beginning of the desorb portion of the refrigeration cycle.
