Claims
- 1. A transaction processing system which accepts transactions originating with a user's presentation of a payment device, and coverts the transactions into electronic debits form a checking account, wherein the payment device comprises devices other than paper checks, credit cards or debit cards, the transaction processing system comprising:
one or more computing devices configured to accept transaction requests including MICR data from a check uniquely associated with a payment device other than a check, a credit card or a debit card, presented by a user to a merchant as payment for goods or services; MICR conversion data usable to covert the MICR data into information used by a clearinghouse system to perform electronic check processing; and historical transaction data usable to assess a risk of performing the transaction requests.
- 2. The transaction processing system of claim 1, wherein the one or more computing devices performs settlement processing.
- 3. The transaction processing system of claim 1, wherein the one or more computing devices performs validation processing.
- 4. The transaction processing system of claim 1, wherein the one or more computing devices performs risk assessments.
- 5. The transaction processing system of claim 1, wherein the payment device comprises one of a transponder, a loyalty card, one or more smart cards, a computing device, a personal digital assistant, a wireless telephone, one or more biometric elements, and one or more devices using biometric information.
- 6. The transaction processing system of claim 1, wherein the transaction requests include at least one of user data and MICR data, and wherein the one or more computing devices uses the at least one of user data and MICR data, along with the historical transaction data to perform one or more merchant-selected risk assessments.
- 7. The transaction processing system of claim 6, wherein the merchant-selected risk assessments comprise searching for at least portions of the user data or MICR data in negative databases.
- 8. The transaction processing system of claim 6, wherein the merchant-selected risk assessments comprise searching for at least portions of the user data or MICR data in positive databases.
- 9. The transaction processing system of claim 6, wherein the merchant-selected risk assessments comprise assessing a risk score.
- 10. The transaction processing system of claim 1, wherein the transaction requests include at least one of user data and MICR data, and wherein the one or more computing devices are also configured to perform one or more merchant-selected data validations using the at least one of user data and MICR data.
- 11. The transaction processing system of claim 10, wherein the merchant-selected data validations comprise validating at least portions of the user data as being accurate.
- 12. The transaction processing system of claim 10, wherein the merchant-selected data validations comprise validating the at least portions of the MICR data as being accurate.
- 13. A transaction processor comprising a one or more computing devices which convert MICR data into electronic debits to be settled against a checking account of a user through a clearinghouse system when a user presents to a merchant an alternative payment device as payment for goods or services being purchased, wherein the alternative payment device is other than a paper check, credit card or debit card.
- 14. The transaction processor or claim 13, wherein the one or more computing devices receives transaction requests including user data and the MICR data from the merchant system.
- 15. The transaction processor of claim 14, wherein the one or more computing devices performs one or more risk assessments on at least some of the user data.
- 16. The transaction processor of claim 14, wherein the one or more computing devices performs one or more validations on at least some of the user data.
- 17. The transaction processor of claim 14, wherein the one or more computing devices performs one or more validations on at least some of the MICR data.
- 18. The transaction processor of claim 14, wherein the one or more computing devices assess a risk of a transaction for the merchant and provides the merchant with guarantee services for the transaction.
- 19. A method of enrolling a user in a transaction processing system which provides for payment for goods or services by a user through a payment device associated with a checking account, wherein the payment device is not a paper check, credit card, or debit card, the method comprising:
formatting at least one validation transaction from enrollment data provided by a user, wherein the enrollment data includes data associated with a checking account; processing the at least one validation transaction to a clearinghouse system as an electronic debit or credit to the checking account; receiving confirmation indicating whether the at least one validation transaction was properly settled; and transmitting an indication of the confirmation to be used in the determination of whether to enroll the user in a transaction processing system which provides for payment for goods or services through a payment device other than a paper check, credit card, or debit card, the payment device being associated with the checking account.
- 20. The method of claim 19, further comprising assessing a risk associated with enrolling the user with the transaction processing system.
- 21. The method of claim 19, further comprising transmitting an indication that future transactions related to the user can be guaranteed.
- 22. The method of claim 19, wherein the transaction data includes MICR data.
- 23. A method of processing purchase transactions from a payment device, the method comprising:
converting MICR data from a merchant's transaction request into at least a portion of an electronic debit when the merchant indicates that a user has presented a payment device as payment for goods or services, wherein the payment device is not a paper check, credit card, or debit card and wherein the MICR data is associated with a paper check from a checking account; submitting the electronic debit to the clearinghouse system; and receiving confirmation indicating whether the electronic debit was properly settled.
- 24. The method of claim 23, further comprising assessing a risk measurement associated with authorizing the transaction request.
- 25. The method of claim 24, further comprising authorizing a transaction request when the risk measurement is within predetermined acceptable parameters.
- 26. The method of claim 24, further comprising transmitting the risk measurement to a merchant system submitting the transaction request.
- 27. The method of claim 24, further comprising guaranteeing the payment.
- 28. The method of claim 23, further comprising validating some or all of user data provided in the transaction request.
- 29. A transaction system comprising:
means for receiving a transaction request when a payment device other than a paper check, a credit card, or a debit card is presented as payment of a purchase price for goods or services being purchased, wherein the transaction request includes at least MICR data corresponding to a paper check and associated with a checking account, and the purchase price; means for converting the MICR data into an electronic debit to be submitted for settlement to a clearinghouse system; and means for receiving reports of the settlement.
- 30. The transaction system of claim 29, wherein the transaction request comprises a transaction time.
- 31. The transaction system of claim 29, wherein the transaction request comprises a transaction place.
- 32. The transaction system of claim 29, wherein the transaction request comprises a transaction date.
- 33. The transaction system of claim 29, wherein the transaction request comprises a merchant's identification number.
- 34. The transaction system of claim 29, wherein the transaction request comprises a merchant's location.
