Claims
- 1. An electronic verification machine for use with a document having conductive material located thereon, comprising:a frame structure; a sensor head tensionably secured to said frame structure to form a document channel in which the document is positioned at a predetermined position relative to said sensor head; a signal generator connected to said sensor head and configured to apply an excitation signal to the document; and a detector connected to said sensor head and configured to detect an electrical signature representing the presence of the conductive material on the document; and a document transporter secured to said frame structure and configured to move the document in said document channel past said sensor head.
- 2. The machine of claim 1 further including a sensor head tensioning guide affixed to said sensor head and a plurality of tensioning fasteners secured to said tensioning guide and spanning between said tensioning guide and said frame structure.
- 3. The machine of claim 2 wherein said tensioning guide is substantially rigid.
- 4. The machine of claim 1 wherein said document transporter includes a roller secured to said frame proximate said document channel and supporting the document against said sensor head.
- 5. The machine of claim 4 wherein said document transporter further includes a stepper motor operatively connected to said roller.
- 6. The machine of claim 1 further including document position detectors operatively coupled to said document transporter and configured to detect the position of the document within said document channel.
- 7. The machine of claim 6 wherein said document position detectors include a first edge detector and a second edge detector located proximate said roller on opposite sides of said roller.
- 8. The machine of claim 7 wherein said first edge detector includes a transmitter and a receiver.
- 9. The machine of claim 8 wherein said transmitter is a light emitting diode and said receiver is a phototransistor.
- 10. The machine of claim 9 wherein said transmitter is secured to said frame structure and said receiver is secured to said sensor head.
- 11. The machine of claim 9 wherein said receiver is embedded within an infrared transparent material.
- 12. An electronic verification machine for use with a document having conductive material located thereon, comprising:a frame structure; a sensor head including an excitation plate and a plurality of sensor plates, said sensor head being tensionably secured to said frame to form a document channel for positioning the document at a predetermined position relative to said sensor head; a signal generator adapted to apply an excitation signal to the document, said signal generator being operatively connected to said excitation plate wherein said excitation plate and said sensor plates protrude from an outer surface of said sensor head by a predetermined amount; and a detector adapted to detect an electrical signature representing the presence of the conductive material on the document, said detection means being operatively connected to said plurality of sensor plates.
- 13. The machine of claim 12 wherein said plurality of sensor plates is linearly aligned and is spaced apart from said excitation plate by a predetermined distance.
- 14. The machine of claim 13 wherein said sensor head further includes a ground strap positioned intermediate said excitation plate and said plurality of sensor plates.
- 15. The machine of claim 12 wherein said excitation plate and said sensor plates are substantially flush with an outer surface of said sensor head.
- 16. The machine of claim 12 wherein said excitation plate and said plurality of sensor plates include a conductive material.
- 17. The machine of claim 16 wherein said excitation plate and said plurality of sensor plates include a layer of copper and a layer of nickel overlying said layer of copper.
- 18. The machine of claim 17 wherein said excitation plate and said plurality of sensor plates are initially formed with a thin layer of gold overlying said layer of nickel.
