Claims
- 1. An endoscopic needle system comprising:an outer tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen, wherein the outer tube is at least partially formed by a coiled structure; an inner tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; a needle connected to and in fluid communication with the distal end of the inner tube, wherein the inner tube and needle are slidably disposed within the outer tube; means for moving the inner tube and needle relative to the outer tube; first means for limiting movement of the needle relative to the outer tube positioned within the lumen of the outer tube; and second means for limiting movement of the needle relative to the outer tube attached to a portion of said needle.
- 2. The endoscopic needle system of claim 1, wherein the first means for limiting movement of the needle includes at least one distal stopping structure positioned within the lumen of the outer tube to engage said second means for limiting movement of the needle.
- 3. The endoscopic needle system of claim 2, wherein the at least one distal stopping structure includes a distally positioned distal stopping structure and a proximally positioned distal stopping structure for preventing forward and reverse motion, respectively, of the second means for limiting movement of the needle and the portion of the needle connected to the second means for limiting movement of the needle beyond the distal stopping structures.
- 4. The endoscopic needle system of claim 3, wherein the distally positioned distal stopping structure prevents a tip of the needle from extending beyond a distal stopping location.
- 5. The endoscopic needle system of claim 4, wherein the distal stopping location is between about 4 mm and about 6 mm beyond a distal end of the endoscopic needle system.
- 6. The endoscopic needle system of claim 3, wherein the proximally positioned distal stopping structure prevents a tip of the needle from retracting into a distal portion of the endoscopic needle system beyond a distal stopping location.
- 7. The endoscopic needle system of claim 6, wherein the proximal stopping location is approximately 1 mm from the distal end of the endoscopic needle system.
- 8. The endoscopic needle system of claim 2, wherein the at least one distal stopping structure is a star washer.
- 9. The endoscopic needle system of claim 2, wherein the at least one distal stopping structure includes barbs on an outer surface thereof for engaging an inner surface of the outer tube.
- 10. The endoscopic needle system of claim 2, wherein the at least one distal stopping structure is configured to permit irrigation.
- 11. The endoscopic needle system of claim 10, wherein the at least one distal stopping structure has an “x” shaped cross section to permit irrigation.
- 12. The endoscopic needle system of claim 1, wherein the second means for limiting movement of the needle includes at least one band attached to a portion of the needle.
- 13. The endoscopic needle system of claim 12, wherein the at least one band includes a distal band and a proximal band for preventing forward and reverse motion, respectively, of the band and the portion of the needle connected to the band beyond the point at which the band engages the first means for limiting movement of the needle.
- 14. The endoscopic needle system of claim 13, wherein the distal band prevents a tip of the needle from extending beyond a distal stopping location.
- 15. The endoscopic needle system of claim 14, wherein the distal stopping location is between about 4 mm and about 6 mm beyond the distal end of the endoscopic needle system.
- 16. The endoscopic needle system of claim 13, wherein the proximal band prevents a tip of the needle from retracting into a distal portion of the endoscopic needle system beyond a proximal stopping location.
- 17. The endoscopic needle system of claim 16, wherein the proximal stopping location is approximately 1 mm from the distal end of the endoscopic needle system.
- 18. The endoscopic needle system of claim 1, wherein the outer tube is a catheter.
- 19. The endoscopic needle system of claim 1, wherein an annular space between the outer tube and the inner tube and needle defines an irrigation channel.
- 20. The endoscopic needle system of claim 1, wherein the means for moving the inner tube and needle relative to the outer tube is a handle connected to the proximal end of the inner tube.
- 21. The endoscopic needle system of claim 20, wherein the handle includes an irrigation port.
- 22. The endoscopic needle system of claim 1, further comprising an endoscope, wherein the outer tube is configured to pass through said endoscope.
- 23. The endoscopic needle system of claim 1, wherein the first means for limiting movement of the needle limits proximal and distal movement of the needle.
- 24. The endoscopic needle system of claim 1, wherein the second means for limiting movement of the needle limits proximal and distal movement of the needle.
- 25. The endoscopic needle system of claim 1, wherein the first means for limiting movement of the needle relative to the outer tube includes a stopping structure positioned in the lumen of the outer tube such that a portion of the stopping structure is placed between coils of the coiled structure.
- 26. An endoscopic surgical system, comprising:an outer sheath at least partially formed by a coiled structure and including a lumen; a surgical instrument capable of being inserted into said outer sheath, said surgical instrument having at least one end effector; an inner sheath having a proximal end and a distal end; the end effector of the surgical instrument being connected to the distal end of the inner sheath; an actuator connected to the proximal end of the inner sheath to actuate the end effector; and a range of motion controller to limit the range of motion of said end effector of the surgical instrument relative to said outer sheath.
- 27. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 26, wherein the range of motion controller includes first means for limiting movement of the end effector relative to the outer sheath positioned within the lumen of the outer sheath.
- 28. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 27, wherein the range of motion controller further includes second means for limiting movement of the end effector relative to the outer sheath attached to a portion of the end effector.
- 29. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 28, wherein the first means for limiting movement of the end effector includes at least one distal stopping structure positioned within the lumen of the outer sheath to engage said second means for limiting movement of the end effector.
- 30. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 29, wherein the at least one distal stopping structure includes a distally positioned distal stopping structure and a proximally positioned distal stopping structure for preventing forward and reverse motion, respectively, of the second means for limiting movement of the end effector and the portion of the end effector connected to the second means for limiting movement of the end effector beyond the distal stopping structures.
- 31. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 28, wherein the second means for limiting movement of the end effector includes al least one band attached to a portion of the end effector.
- 32. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 31, wherein the at least one band includes a distal band and a proximal band for preventing forward and reverse motion, respectively, of the band and the portion of the end effector connected to the band beyond the point at which the band engages the first means for limiting movement of the end effector.
- 33. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 26, wherein the range of motion controller includes at least one stationary stopping structure having proximal and distal contact surfaces and at least one moveable stop having proximal and distal contact surfaces, which when in contact with the contact surfaces of the stationary stopping structure, serve to limit the range of motion of the end effector by providing proximal and distal stopping locations for the end effector.
- 34. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 33, wherein the at least one moveable stopping structure includes at least one band attached to and movable with a portion of the end effector.
- 35. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 34, wherein the at least one stationary stopping structure includes at least one distal stopping structure for engaging the at least one band and preventing motion of the at least one band and the portion of the needle attached to the at least one band beyond the distal stopping structure.
- 36. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 34, wherein the at least one band includes a distal band and a proximal band for preventing forward and reverse motion, respectively, of one of the bands and the portion of the end effector connected to the band beyond the point at which the band engages the stationary stopping structure.
- 37. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 26, wherein the range of motion controller includes at least one distal stopping structure positioned within the lumen of the outer sheath, and the at least one distal stopping structure is a star washer.
- 38. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 26, wherein the range of motion controller includes at least one distal stopping structure positioned within the lumen of the outer sheath, and the at least one distal stopping structure includes barbs on an outer surface thereof for engaging an inner surface of the outer sheath.
- 39. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 26, wherein the range of motion controller includes at least one distal stopping structure positioned within the lumen of the outer sheath, and the at least one distal stopping structure has an “x” shaped cross section to permit irrigation.
- 40. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 26, wherein the range of motion controller limits proximal and distal movement of the end effector of the surgical instrument relative to the outer sheath.
- 41. The endoscopic surgical system of claim 26, wherein the range of motion controller includes a stopping structure positioned in the lumen of the outer sheath such that a portion of the stopping structure is placed between coils of the coiled structure.
- 42. An endoscopic needle system comprising:an outer tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; an inner tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; a needle connected to and in fluid communication with the distal end of the inner tube, wherein the inner tube and needle are slidably disposed within the outer tube; means for moving the inner tube and needle relative to the outer tube; first means for limiting movement of the needle relative to the outer tube positioned within the lumen of the outer tube; and second means for limiting movement of the needle relative to the outer tube attached to a portion of said needle, wherein the first means for limiting movement of the needle includes at least one distal stopping structure positioned within the lumen of the outer tube to engage said second means for limiting movement of the needle, and the at least one distal stopping structure is a star washer.
- 43. An endoscopic needle system comprising:an outer tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; an inner tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; a needle connected to and in fluid communication with the distal end of the inner tube, wherein the inner tube and needle are slidably disposed within the outer tube; means for moving the inner tube and needle relative to the outer tube; first means for limiting movement of the needle relative to the outer tube positioned within the lumen of the outer tube; and second means for limiting movement of the needle relative to the outer tube attached to a portion of said needle, wherein the first means for limiting movement of the needle includes at least one distal stopping structure positioned within the lumen of the outer tube to engage said second means for limiting movement of the needle, and the at least one distal stopping structure includes barbs on an outer surface thereof for engaging an inner surface of the outer tube.
- 44. An endoscopic needle system comprising:an outer tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; an inner tube having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen; a needle connected to and in fluid communication with the distal end of the inner tube, wherein the inner tube and needle are slidably disposed within the outer tube; means for moving the inner tube and needle relative to the outer tube; first means for limiting movement of the needle relative to the outer tube positioned within the lumen of the outer tube; and second means for limiting movement of the needle relative to the outer tube attached to a portion of said needle, wherein the first means for limiting movement of the needle includes at least one distal stopping structure positioned within the lumen of the outer tube to engage said second means for limiting movement of the needle, and the at least one distal stopping structure has an “x” shaped cross section to permit irrigation.
