Claims
- 1. A process involving endothermic gasification reactions for recovering chemical products and energy from spent liquor by steam gasifying said spent liquor without producing smelt, said process comprising the steps of:
- (a) forming a bed of solids in a reaction vessel having heating conduits therein by providing solid alkali salts to said reaction vessel so that said heating conduits are immersed in said bed of solids;
- (b) supplying heat for said endothermic gasification reactions by indirectly heating said bed of solids in said reaction vessel to a temperature below the smelting temperature of said solid alkali salts in order to avoid the information of smelt, said heat being transferred to said bed from said heating conduits immersed in said bed of solids;
- (c) introducing said spent liquor into said reaction vessel so that said spent liquor contacts a portion of said solid alkali salts within said bed and an acidic product gas is formed within said reaction vessel; and
- (d) withdrawing said acidic product gas from said reaction vessel.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein said acidic product gas is further processed to obtain clean product gas and recover process chemicals of said spent liquor.
- 3. The process of claim 2 wherein said processing of said acidic product gas comprises scrubbing said acidic product gas with an alkaline solution to recover sulfur and form green liquor.
- 4. The process of claim 3 further comprising the step of adding lime to said green liquor to form sodium hydroxide and sodium sulfide.
- 5. The process of claim 3 further comprising the steps of separating entrained particles from said product gas before scrubbing said acidic product gas, dissolving said entrained particles to recover inorganic salts and carbon residue and form a sodium carbonate solution, and using said sodium carbonate solution for scrubbing said acidic product gas.
- 6. The process of claim 3 further comprising the steps of withdrawing a portion of said solid alkali salts from said bed of solids; dissolving said solid alkali salts to recover inorganic salts and carbon residue and form sodium carbonate solution; and using said sodium carbonate solution for scrubbing said product gas.
- 7. The process of claim 1, wherein said solid alkali salts comprise solid sodium salts.
- 8. The process of claim 7, wherein said solid sodium salts comprise sodium carbonate.
- 9. The process of claim 1, wherein said bed of solids in said reaction vessel is heated to a temperature in the range of from about 950.degree. F. to about 1350.degree. F.
- 10. The process of claim 1, further comprising the step of injecting fluid into said bed of solids in said reaction vessel so that said bed of solids is maintained in an agitated state.
- 11. The process of claim 10 wherein said fluid comprises a portion of said acidic product gas which is withdrawn from said reaction vessel.
- 12. The process of claim 10, wherein said fluid is injected into said bed of solids in said reaction vessel at a rate sufficient to produce a velocity in the range of from about 1 to about 10 ft/sec within said bed.
- 13. The process of claim 10, wherein said fluid comprises steam.
- 14. The process of claim 1, wherein said clean product gas has a heating value in the range of from about 250 to about 450 BTU/ft.sup.3.
- 15. The process of claim 1, wherein said heating conduits comprise one or more tubes of one or more pulsating combustors.
- 16. The process of claim 1, wherein said spent liquor comprises spent liquor from a Kraft pulping process.
- 17. The process of claim 1, wherein said spent liquor comprises spent liquor from a sulfite pulping process.
- 18. The process of claim 1, wherein said heating conduits comprise one or more steam tube heaters.
- 19. The process of claim 1 further comprising the step of forming a solid product in said reaction vessel when said acidic product gas is formed within said reaction vessel.
- 20. The process of claim 19 wherein said solid product comprises char.
- 21. The process of claim 19 further comprising the step of forming a liquid product in said reaction vessel when said acidic product gas is formed within said reaction vessel.
- 22. The process of claim 21 wherein said liquid product comprises tar.
- 23. The process of claim 21 further comprising the step of withdrawing said solid product and said liquid product from said reaction vessel.
- 24. A process for steam gasifying spent liquor without producing smelt, said process comprising the steps of:
- (a) forming a bed of solids in a reaction vessel having a resonance tube of a pulse combustor therein by providing solid alkali salts to said reaction vessel so that said resonance tube is immersed in said bed of solids;
- (b) injecting fluid into said bed of solids in said reaction vessel so that said bed of solids is maintained in an agitated state;
- (c) indirectly heating said bed of solids in said reaction vessel to a substantially uniform temperature below the smelting temperature of said solid alkali salts heat by transferring heat from said resonance tubes immersed in said bed of solids;
- (d) introducing said spent liquor into said reaction vessel so that said spent liquor contacts a portion of said solid alkali salts within said bed and an acidic product gas is formed within said reaction vessel; and
- (e) withdrawing said acidic product gas from said reaction vessel.
- 25. A process involving endothermic gasification reactions for recovering chemical products and energy from spent liquor by steam gasifying said spent liquor without producing smelt, said process comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a mass of solid alkali salts to a reaction vessel having heating conduits located therein so that a bed of solids surrounding said conduits is formed in said reaction vessel;
- (b) providing the heat for said endothermic gasification reactions by supplying a fluid medium through said heating conduits in said reaction vessel so that said bed of solids in said reaction vessel is indirectly heated to a temperature below the smelting temperature of said solid alkali salts in order to avoid the production of smelt;
- (c) introducing said spent liquor into said reaction vessel so that said spent liquor comes into contact with solid alkali salts and an acidic product gas is formed within said reaction vessel; and
- (d) withdrawing said acidic product gas from said reaction vessel.
- 26. The process of claim 25, further comprising the step of injecting fluid into said bed of solids in said reaction vessel to maintain said bed of solids in an agitated state.
- 27. A process involving endothermic gasification reactions for recovering chemical products and energy from spent liquor by steam gasifying said spent liquor without producing smelt, said process comprising the steps of:
- (a) forming a bed of solids in a reaction vessel having shielded electric heaters therein by providing solid alkali salts to said reaction vessel so that said shielded electric heaters are immersed in said bed of solids;
- (b) supplying the heat for said endothermic gasification reactions by indirectly heating said bed of solids in said reaction vessel to a temperature below the smelting temperature of said solid alkali salts in order to avoid the formation of smelt, said heat being transferred to said bed from said shielded electric heaters immersed in said bed of solids;
- (c) introducing said liquor into said reaction vessel so that said spent liquor contacts a portion of said solid alkali salts within said bed and an acidic product gas is formed within said reaction vessel; and
- (d) withdrawing said acidic product gas from said reaction vessel.
