Claims
- 1. A vibration damping constrained layer construction comprising a laminate of one or more stiff substrates and one or more polymeric mixtures produced from a composition of matter comprising a curable mixture comprising 1 to 99 weight percent of a first monomer and an initiator therefor, the first monomer being one of 1) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer or 2) at least one cyanate ester monomer, and 99 to 1 weight percent of a second monomer and an initiator therefor, the second monomer being the member of 1) or 2) that is not selected as the first monomer, wherein an initiator for the cyanate ester is a transition metal-containing organometallic compound curing agent and an initiator for the ethylenically unsaturated monomer is a free-radical generating curing agent or a transition metal-containing organometallic compound, wherein said initiators are independently thermally or photochemically initiated in any combination and in any order to provide a polymeric mixture, said composition when one or more of said monomers has at least commenced curing comprises one or both of an interpenetrating polymer network and a semi-interpenetrating polymer network, said networks comprising a semi-phase separated morphology which includes a continuum of phase compositions.
- 2. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 1 wherein said polymer mixture is the cured reaction product of isooctyl acrylate, isobornyl acrylate, and at least one cyanate ester resin comprising at least one polycycloalipahtic group, and wherein the catalyst is a combination of benzildimethyl ketal and cyclopentadienylirondicarbonyl dimer.
- 3. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 1 wherein said ethylenically unsaturated monomer of said composition of matter is selected from the group consisting of acrylates and methacrylate monomers.
- 4. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 1 wherein said cyanate ester monomer of said composition of matter comprises the formula

- wherein Q comprises at least one of 1) an aromatic hydrocarbon di-, tri-, or tetra-radical containing from 5 to 30 carbon atoms, wherein 1) optionally comprises at least one of (a) one to five aliphatic or polycyclic aliphatic divalent hydrocarbon groups containing 7 to 20 carbon atoms and (b) zero to 10 heteroatoms, and 2) divalent fluorocarbon group having 3 to 12,500 carbon atoms and 5 to 25,000 fluorine atoms, and p is an integer in the range of 2 to b 7.
- 5. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 4 wherein said composition of matter further comprises at least one monofunctional cyanate compound of formula QOCN, wherein Q is as defined in claim 4.
- 6. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 1 wherein said organometallic compound of said composition of matter has the formula

- L.sup.1 represents none, or 1 to 12 ligands contributing pi-electrons that can be the same or different selected from the group consisting of a) acyclic unsaturated and cyclic unsaturated compounds and groups, b) carbocyclic aromatic compounds and groups, and c) heterocyclic aromatic compounds and groups, each capable of contributing 2 to 24 pi-electrons to the valence shell of M;
- L.sup.2 represents none, or 1 to 24 ligands that can be the same or different contributing an even number of sigma-electrons that are selected from mono-, di-, and tri-dentate ligands, each donating 2, 4, or 6 sigma-electrons to the valence shell of M;
- L.sup.3 represents none, or 1 to 12 ligands that can be the same or different, each contributing no more than one sigma-electron each to the valence shell of each M;
- M represents 1 to 6 of the same or different metal atoms selected from the group consisting of the elements of Periodic Groups IVB, VB, VIB, VIIB, and VIII;
- e is an integer having a value of 0, 1 or 2, such that the organometallic portion of the molecule is neutral, cationic or dicationic;
- each X is selected from the group consisting of organic sulfonates, halogenated metals or metalloids, and alkylated or arylated metal or metalloid; and p-toluenesulfonate, p-chlorobenzenesulfonate, BF.sub.4.sup.-, PF.sub.6.sup.-, AsF.sub.6.sup.-, SbF.sub.6.sup.-, FeCl.sub.4.sup.-, SnCl.sub.5.sup.-, SbF.sub.5.sup.-, AlF.sub.6.sup.-, GaCl.sub.4.sup.-, InF.sub.4.sup.-, TiF.sub.6.sup.-, CH.sub.3 SO.sub.3.sup.-, B(C.sub.6 H.sub.5).sub.4.sup.-, C.sub.6 H.sub.5 SO.sub.3.sup.-, CF.sub.3 SO.sub.3.sup.-, SbF.sub.5 OH.sup.-, and SbCl.sub.6.sup.- ;
- f is an integer of 0, 1 or 2, the number of anions required to balance the charge e on the organometallic portion;
- with the proviso that the organometallic compound contains at least one transition metal-carbon bond; and with the proviso that L.sup.1, L.sup.2, L.sup.3, M, e, X, and f are chosen so as to achieve a stable configuration.
- 7. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 6 wherein X of said organometallic compound is a tetraalkyl or tetraaryl borate.
- 8. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 6 wherein X of said organometallic compound is selected from the group consisting of BF.sub.4.sup.-, PF.sub.6.sup.-, AsF.sub.6.sup.-, SbF.sub.6.sup.-, B(C.sub.6 H.sub.5).sub.4.sup.-, CF.sub.3 SO.sub.3.sup.-, and SbF.sub.5 OH.sup.-.
- 9. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 1 wherein said initiators of said composition of matter are independently thermally or photochemically initiated in any combination and in any order to provide a polymeric mixture.
- 10. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 1 wherein said ethylenically unsaturated monomer is present in the range of 70 to 30 weight percent and said at least one cyanate ester monomer is present in the range of 30 to 70 weight percent.
- 11. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 1 wherein said ethylenically unsaturated monomer in said composition of matter is present in the range of 60 to 40 weight percent and said at least one cyanate ester monomer is present in the range of 40 to 60 weight percent.
- 12. The vibration damping constrained layer construction comprising the polymeric mixture according to claim 9.
- 13. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 1 wherein said stiff substrate comprises a metal or alloy.
- 14. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 1 wherein said stiff substrate comprises a polymeric material.
- 15. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 1 wherein said stiff substrate comprises a glass or ceramic material.
- 16. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 1 wherein said stiff substrate comprises a web or sheet.
- 17. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 12 wherein said polymeric mixture is affixed to said substrate.
- 18. The vibration damping constrained layer construction according to claim 12 wherein said polymeric mixture is sandwiched between a panel to be damped and said stiff layer.
