Claims
- 1. A system for cooling engine oil for a vehicle engine having a crankcase and a case wall, comprising:
- a water-cooled cooler operative to transfer heat from said engine oil to cooling water, said cooler being mounted on, and extending across, the front side of said case wall;
- means for passing cooling water to said cooler;
- means for supplying engine oil to said cooler including passage means integrally formed in said engine case wall defining an inlet passage on the upstream side of said cooler, an outlet passage extending parallel to said inlet passage on the downstream side of said cooler, and a bypass flow passage containing an orifice interconnecting said inlet and outlet passages exteriorly of said cooler;
- an oil conductor body disposed integrally with said case wall interiorly of said crankcase containing parallel passages defining said oil inlet passage and said oil outlet passage to said cooler;
- means in said oil conductor body forming a bypass connector between said oil inlet and outlet passages; and
- means for connecting said oil inlet passage and said oil outlet passage in said oil conductor body to said cooler, said oil conductor body having a cooler-mounting surface containing first laterally spaced openings, said oil cooler having a surface containing second laterally spaced openings in alignment with said first openings, a base plate containing openings for registering said first openings with said second openings, and connector means for interconnecting said cooler, said base plate and said conductor body.
- 2. The oil cooling system according to claim 1 in which said cooling fluid is water.
- 3. The oil cooling system according to claim 2 in which said vehicle includes a radiator; and means interconnecting said radiator and said oil cooler for the circulation of cooling water between said radiator and said cooler.
- 4. The oil cooling system according to claim 1 in which said vehicle includes a radiator; and means interconnecting said radiator and said oil cooler for the circulation of cooling water between said radiator and said cooler.
- 5. A system for cooling engine oil in a vehicle engine comprising:
- a cooler operative to transfer heat from said engine oil to a cooling fluid;
- wall means on said vehicle engine forming an oil collection reservoir having a front wall fixedly connecting said cooler on a forwardly facing surface on the front wall thereof for exposure to air flowing during vehicle movement whereby said cooling fluid comprises said flowing air;
- means for supplying engine oil to said cooler including inlet and outlet passages extending through said vehicle engine wall means and communicating with said cooler and an upstanding flow conductor positioned interiorly of said engine, an orifice in said flow conductor dividing the interior thereof into an oil inlet portion and an oil outlet portion, and oil flow pipes extending between said wall means and said flow conductor for connecting said oil inlet portion of said conductor to said cooler inlet passage and said oil outlet portion of said conductor to said cooler outlet passage; and
- said oil flow passages are disposed in mutually divergent relation between said flow conductor and said wall means.
- 6. A system for a vehicle engine having a case wall forming an oil collection reservoir for cooling engine oil by heat transfer to a cooling fluid, comprising:
- a water-cooled cooler operative to transfer heat from said engine oil to cooling water mounted on and extending across the forwardly facing surface of said oil collection reservoir, whereby said cooling fluid includes air flowing past said cooler during movement of said vehicle;
- means for passing cooling water to said cooler;
- means for supplying engine oil to said cooler including inlet and outlet oil flow passages integrally formed in and extending through said oil collection reservoir-forming case wall, an upstanding flow conductor having an orifice therein dividing the interior thereof into an oil inlet portion and an oil outlet portion and mutually divergent oil flow pipes extending between said case wall connecting said oil inlet and outlet portions in said flow conductor to said inlet and outlet passages in said case wall.
