Claims
- 1. In a process for the preparation of a mono-ester of an aliphatic, saturated or unsaturated, straight or branched chain, C2-C24 monocarboxylic acid and a polyhydric alcohol which comprises contacting the acid and alcohol, in the presence of an enzyme, the improvement wherein the enzyme is potato lipid acyl hydrolase which is not recombinantly produced whereby the mono-ester is formed with a minimum formation of di- or higher-ester.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein the acid is an aliphatic, saturated, straight chain, C6-C22 monocarboxylic acid.
- 3. A process according to claim 1 wherein the polyhydric alcohol is selected from the group consisting of dihydric alcohols, trihydric alcohols, tetrahydric alcohols, pentahydric alcohols, hexahydric alcohols, sugars, sugar alkyl ethers and mixtures thereof.
- 4. A process according to claim 1 wherein the polyhydric alcohol is glycerol or diglycerol.
- 5. A process according to claim 1 wherein the polyhydric alcohol is an alkylglycoside wherein the alkyl group comprises 1 to 18 carbon atoms.
- 6. A process according to claim 2 wherein the potato lipid acyl hydrolase is patatin.
- 7. A process according to claim 1 wherein the potato lipid acyl hydrolase is present in a protein extract isolated from potato tubers.
- 8. A process according to claim 1 wherein the total water content of the reaction mixture is less than 10% by weight.
- 9. A process according to claim 1 wherein the reaction temperature is one within the range of 10° C. to 90° C. wherein the enzyme is not deactivated.
- 10. In a process for the preparation of a mono-ester of an aliphatic, saturated or unsaturated, straight or branched chain, C2-C24 monocarboxylic acid and glycerol which comprises contacting the acid and glycerol, in the presence of an enzyme, the improvement wherein the enzyme is potato lipid acyl hydrolase whereby the mono-ester of glycerol is formed with a minimum formation of di- or higher-ester.
