Claims
- 1. An oligomer useful in forming advanced composites, comprising:
- a cyclic central hub having at least three substantially identical radiating chains linked about the hub, each chain including at least one image selected from the group consisting of --O--, --CO--, --S--, --SO.sub.2 --, --(CH.sub.3).sub.2 C--, and --(CF.sub.3).sub.2 C--, each chain including a terminal, unsaturated hydrocarbon, crosslinking unit that can be chemically or thermally activated in the oligomer to form a crosslinked composite.
- 2. The oligomer of claim 1 wherein the terminal crosslinking unit includes a radical selected from the group consisting of: ##STR54## wherein Me is methyl:
- j is 0, 1, or 2;
- G is any of --CH.sub.2 --, --S--, --SO.sub.2 --, --O--, --CO--, --SO--, --CH.delta.--, and C.delta..sub.2 --;
- E is allyl or methallyl;
- .delta. is any of hydrogen, lower alkyl, and phenyl; and
- R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, halogen, and mixtures thereof.
- 3. The oligomer of claim 1 wherein the hub is selected form the group consisting of: ##STR55## wherein R.sub.5 is a divalent hydrocarbon residue containing 1-12 carbon atoms;
- wherein R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and methyl and wherein R can be the same or different; and
- wherein the hub is connected to each arm through a linkage selected form the group consisting of ether and ester.
- 4. A polyester or polyether oligomer of the formula: ##STR56## wherein Ar is a trivalent organic radical;
- R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are divalent organic radicals and can be the same or different;
- .alpha..sub.1 is ether or ester;
- .alpha..sub.2 is ether, if .alpha..sub.1 is ether, or is ##STR57## and is ##STR58## n is 0-5; Z is Y.sub.i --.O slashed.--;
- .O slashed. is phenylene;
- i is 1 or 2;
- Y is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR59## X is halogen: j is 0, 1, or 2;
- Me is methyl;
- E is allyl or methally;
- G is --CH.sub.2 --, --O--, --S--, --SO.sub.2 --, --SO--, --CO--, --CHR.sup.1 --, or C(R.sup.1).sub.2 ;
- R.sub.1 is lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, and mixtures thereof; and
- .delta. and R.sup.1 independently are hydrogen, lower alkyl, or phenyl.
- 5. The polyether of claim 4 wherein .alpha..sub.1 is ether.
- 6. The polyester of claim 4 wherein .alpha..sub.1 is ##STR60##
- 7. The polyester of claim 4 wherein .alpha..sub.1 is ##STR61##
- 8. A process for making crosslinkable polyether or polyester oligomers useful in forming advanced composites, comprising the steps of:
- reacting Ar--(OH).sub.3 with ##STR62## or reacting Ar--(X).sub.3 with Z--OH,
- wherein X is halogen,
- Z is ##STR63## Y is ##STR64## .O slashed. is phenylene; n is a small integer from about 1-5;
- i is 1 or 2;
- j is 0, 1, or 2;
- R.sub.1 is lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, halogen, and mixtures thereof;
- G any of --CH.sub.2, --O--, --S--, --SO.sub.2 --, --SO--, --CO--, CH.delta.--, and --C(.delta.).sub.2 --;
- .delta. is hydrogen, lower alkyl, or phenyl;
- Me is methyl
- E is allyl or methallyl, and
- Ar is a trivalent organic radical.
- 9. The polyester of claim 4 wherein R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are independently selected from the group consisting of: ##STR65## wherein D is any of --CO--, SO.sub.2 --, or --(CF.sub.3).sub.2 C--;
- m is an integer;
- Me is methyl; and
- q is an electronegative group being any of --CO--, --S--, --(CF.sub.3).sub.2 C--, or --SO.sub.2 --.
- 10. The process of claim 8 further comprising the step of:
- when Ar--(OH).sub.3 is used, adding a diacid halide of the formula: ##STR66## wherein R.sub.2 is a divalent organic radical and a diol of the formula:
- HO--R.sub.3 --OH
- wherein R.sub.3 is a divalent organic radical to provide an extended chain polyester, or when Ar--(X).sub.3 is used, adding a dihalide of the formula:
- X--R.sub.4 --X
- wherein R.sub.4 is a divalent organic radical and a diol of the formula:
- HO--R.sub.3 --OH
- to provide an extended chain polyether.
- 11. The process of #10 where R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are selected form the group consisting of: ##STR67## wherein D is any of --CO--, SO.sub.2 --, or --(CF.sub.3).sub.2 C--;
- m is an integer;
- Me is methyl; and
- q is an electronegative group being any of --CO--, --S--, --(CF.sub.3).sub.2 --, or --SO.sub.2 --.
- 12. The product of the process of claim 8.
- 13. The product of the process of claim 10.
- 14. The product of the process of claim 11.
