The present invention involves a tool in the form of a handled scoop device configured to remove animal waste from litter.
Owners of domestic cats routinely provide a litter box and often multiple litter boxes if more than one cat resides at a particular household.
Litter boxes can be covered or uncovered and some can also be self cleaning. However, in most instances, in order to avoid unnecessary complexity and result cost, waste is removed from the typical litter box through use of a scoop or similar separating means. This is particularly important recognizing that cats are well known for their sense of hygiene and most will not use a litter box if it is not well maintained. Most cat owners believe that one should scoop any visible waste from the box at least once a day although some cats are so fastidious that they require that their litter box be cleaned after every use.
Scooping waste from a litter box is a reasonably easy task noting that urine clumps into fairly solid chunks of litter and solid waste tends to become coated with the litter material so that it tends not to stick to a scoop removal tool. Nevertheless, prior waste separating tools currently offered are not always ideally suited for the task. For example, typical litter pans are placed on the floor requiring one to bend over to remove waste. Such devices have been configured with fixed handles which if short to facilitate storage, make waste removal difficult due to excessive bending and if long to reduce bending, make storage inconvenient.
It is thus an object of this invention to provide a litter scoop tool improving upon the limitations of the prior art.
These and further objects will become more readily apparent when considering the following disclosure and appended claims.
A tool for separating animal waste from litter. The tool includes a scoop portion having a bottom, sidewalls and handle. The gripping portion of the handle is composed of flexible material providing a comfortable grip that is easy to clean. Silicone and thermoplastic rubber are excellent choices for such material. The handle is made to telescope from the scoop portion for ease of use and storage. The bottom and sidewalls have cut out portions to facilitate the passage of litter but not a substantial amount of animal waste.
Novel features which are characteristic of the invention, as to organization and method of operation, together with further objects and advantages thereof will be better understood from the following description considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated by way of example. It is to be expressly understood, however, that the drawings are for illustration description only and are not intended as definitions of the limits of the invention. A key feature of the present invention is the use of a telescoping handle made of subparts 16 and 17. Users of tools of this nature, it is believed, would prefer a longer handle when employing the tool to separate animal waste from litter but would appreciate a shorter handle when storing such an implement. In meeting these needs, the handle of the present invention can be caused to retract or extend in the direction of arrows 22 by providing a handle having inner shaft 16 and outer sleeve 17. As noted, inner shaft 16 has at least one protrusion 20 while outer sleeve 17 has at least one indent 21, in this case, in the form of an opening, to facilitate the snap-release contact between these elements.
