Claims
- 1. A card-edge connector assembly having a connector adapted to receive a first type of circuit board card having conductive pads in a first array and, also adapted to receive a second type of circuit board card having conductive pads in a second array occupying similar positions on the second type of card as the first array on the first type of card and, also having a third array, the connector comprising:
- a housing having a card-edge receiving area; means for contacting the pads on the circuit board cards including first contact members and second contact members, the first contact members being supported by the housing for electrically connecting to the pads on the first type of card or the second array of conductor pads on the second type of card upon insertion of the first or second types of cards into the receiving area and, the second contact members being supported by the housing for electrically connecting to the pads on the second type of card upon insertion of the second type of card into the receiving area;
- means on the housing for limiting insertion of the first type of card to a first predetermined position in the receiving area for electrically connecting the pads of the first type of card with the first contact members and, for locating the second type of card in a second predetermined position in the receiving area for electrically connecting the pads in the second array to the first contact members and the pads in the third array to the second contact members; and
- a second type of card having a portion in the receiving area and a groove in an edge adapted to pass over the limiting means to enable the second type of card to be inserted into the receiving area beyond the first predetermined position to a second predetermined position wherein its second array of pads is in electrical connection with the first contact members and its third array of pads is in electrical connection with the second contact members.
- 2. A method of assembling a circuit board and connector assembly, the connector being adapted to receive a first type of circuit board card having conductive pads in a first array and also adapted to receive a second type of circuit board card having conductive pads in a second array different from the first array, the method comprising the steps of:
- providing a housing having a card-edge receiving area, first contact members supported by the housing for electrically connecting to the pads on the first type of card upon insertion of the first card into the receiving area, second contact members supported by the housing for electrically connecting to at least some of the pads on the second type of card upon insertion of the second type of card into the receiving area, the second contact members being located in a deeper position in the receiving area than the first contact members, and stop means on the housing for preventing the first type of card from being inserted past a predetermined position in the receiving area such that the pads of the first type of card can be connected with only the first contact members and cannot contact the second contact members;
- inserting a leading edge of the first type of card into the card receiving area and contacting the first contact members; and
- stopping the leading edge of the first type of card from being inserted beyond the predetermined position in the receiving area with the leading edge of the first card being prevented from further insertion by contacting the stop means thereby preventing the first type of card from contacting the second contact members.
- 3. A method of assembling a card-edge connector with a printed circuit board comprising the steps of:
- providing a card-edge connector having a housing with a card edge receiving area, a first series of upper contacts on the housing, a second series of lower contacts on the housing, and at least one card stop having a stop surface in the receiving area in an area between the two series of contacts;
- providing a printed circuit card having a connection portion with a leading edge and a plurality of conductive pads and, the card also having at least one groove for cooperating with the at least one card stop;
- inserting the connection portion of the card into the connector card edge receiving area; and
- enabling the leading edge of the card to be inserted beyond the stop surface of the at least one card stop to allow conductive pads on the card to contact the first and second contacts with the at least one card groove allowing the leading edge of the card to pass beyond the stop surface of the at least one card stop.
