Claims
- 1. A stent for placement in a bifurcated body lumen having a main branch and a side branch, said stent comprising:a radially expandable, generally cylindrical body having a first end, a second end, and a side opening between said ends, wherein a first portion of the body between the first end and the side opening expands in response to a first radially outward pressure and a second portion of the body between the side opening and the second end expands in response to a second radially outward pressure, wherein the first pressure is less than the second pressure, and wherein said first portion and said second portion comprise substantially the same material.
- 2. A stent as in claim 1, wherein the first pressure is in the range from about 1 atmosphere to about 10 atmospheres and the second pressure is in the range from about 2 atmospheres to about 18 atmospheres.
- 3. A stent as in claim 1, wherein the first portion has a first axial spine and wherein the first axial spine expands circumferentially in response to said first radially outward pressure.
- 4. The stent as in claim 3 wherein the second portion has a second axial spine that expands circumferentially in response to a second radially outward pressure.
- 5. A stent as in claim 1, wherein the first portion comprises serpentine rings with a first strut length and the second portion comprises serpentine rings with a second strut length, wherein the first strut length is greater than the second strut length.
- 6. The stent as in claim 1, wherein said stent body comprises a plurality of cells, said side opening being multiple times the size of each of the cells prior to expansion of the stent body.
- 7. A stent as in claim 1, wherein the first portion comprises a first strut pattern and the second portion comprises a second strut pattern, wherein the first strut pattern is different than the second strut pattern.
- 8. The stent as in claim 7 wherein the first portion comprises a first axial spine, said first axial spine comprising a third strut pattern.
- 9. The stent as in claim 1 wherein the first portion comprises a first strut pattern and the second portion comprises a second strut pattern, said first strut pattern being different than said second strut pattern, and wherein the first portion further comprises a first axial spine that expands circumferentially in response to said first radially outward pressure, said first axial spine having a third strut pattern.
- 10. A method for deploying a stent in a bifurcated body lumen, said method comprising:providing a stent having a first portion, a second portion, and a side opening between said portions, said first and second portion comprising substantially the same material and adapted to expand at different pressures; expanding the first portion against a luminal wall segment on one side of the bifurcation; aligning the side opening with an ostium of the branch lumen; and expanding the second portion on the other side of the bifurcation.
- 11. A stent for placement in a bifurcated body lumen having a main branch and a side branch, said stent comprising:a radially expandable generally cylindrical stent body having proximal and distal opposing ends with a body wall having an even surface extending therebetween, said body wall having a plurality of cells, and a side opening therethrough, said side opening being multiple times the size of each of the cells prior to expansion of the stent body; and a deflectable element integrally formed with the stent body, wherein the deflectable element is generally flush with the tubular envelope of the stent body within the side opening prior to expansion of said stent body; wherein said stent body comprises an axial spine, and said deflectable element is generally aligned with said axial spine.
- 12. A method for deploying a stent in a bifurcated body lumen, said method comprising, in order:providing a stent having a first portion, a second portion, and a side opening between said portions; expanding said first portion against a luminal wall segment on one side of the bifurcation; aligning the side opening with an ostium of the branch lumen; and expanding the second portion on the other side of the bifurcation.
- 13. A method for deploying a stent in a bifurcated body lumen, said method comprising, in order:providing a stent having a first portion, a second portion, and a side opening between said portions; aligning the side opening with an ostium of the branch lumen; expanding said first portion against a luminal wall segment on one side of the bifurcation; and expanding the second portion on the other side of the bifurcation.
- 14. A stent for placement in a bifurcated body lumen, said stent comprising:a main tubular body having first and second portions, first and second ends, and a side opening between said ends; said first portion having a first axial spine, said first portion adapted to expand in response to a first radially outward pressure; said second portion having a second axial spine, said second portion adapted to expand in response to a second radially outward pressure; and wherein the first pressure is less than the second pressure.
