Claims
- 1. A stent for placement in a bifurcated body lumen having a main branch and a side branch, the stent comprising:a radially expandable generally cylindrical stent body having proximal and distal opposing ends with a body wall having a surface extending therebetween, said stent body having a plurality of cells and a side opening therethrough, said side opening being larger than each of the cells and configured to allow access to a side branch upon expansion of the stent body; and an expandable portion surrounding said side opening, wherein said expandable portion is expandable independently of the stent body, said expandable portion comprises: a plurality of elements, each of said elements having two ends, wherein one of said two ends is integrally formed with the stent body and wherein another of said two ends is unattached to the stent body prior to deployment, and wherein the elements are outwardly deflectable relative to the surface of the stent body so as to extend into the side branch while the stent body is within the main branch.
- 2. A stent as in claim 1, wherein the side opening is surrounded by radiopaque markers.
- 3. A stent as in claim 1, wherein the side opening is symmetrical.
- 4. A stent as in claim 1, wherein the side opening is positioned closer to the proximal end than the distal end.
- 5. A stent as in claim 1, wherein the side opening is generally circular.
- 6. A stent for placement in a bifurcated body lumen having a main branch and a side branch, the stent comprising:a radially expandable generally cylindrical stent body having proximal and distal opposing ends with a body wall having a surface extending therebetween, said body wall comprising a plurality of cells comprised of struts and a side opening therethrough, said side opening being larger than each of the cells upon expansion of the stent body; and an expandable portion surrounding said side opening, said expandable portion having a different configuration than said struts, the configuration being suitable for expansion into said side opening, wherein said expandable portion is expandable independently of the stent body, said expandable portion comprises: a plurality of elements, each of said elements having two ends, wherein one of said two ends is integrally formed with the stent body and wherein another of said two ends is unattached to the stent body prior to deployment, and wherein said unattached ends are outwardly deflectable relative to the surface of the stent body.
- 7. A stent as in claim 6, wherein the side opening is surrounded by radiopaque markers.
- 8. A stent as in claim 6, wherein the side opening is symmetrical.
- 9. A stent as in claim 6, wherein the side opening is positioned closer to the proximal end than the distal end.
- 10. A stent as in claim 6, wherein the side opening is generally circular.
- 11. A stent for placement in a bifurcated body lumen having a main branch and a side branch, the stent comprising:a radially expandable generally cylindrical stent body having proximal and distal opposing ends with a body wall having a surface extending therebetween, said body wall comprising a plurality of cells comprised of struts, and a side opening through said stent body, said side opening being larger than each of the cells and configured to allow access to a side branch upon expansion of the stent body; and an expandable portion surrounding said side opening, said expandable portion having a different configuration than said struts, the configuration being suitable for expansion into said side opening, wherein said expandable portion is expandable independently of the stent body, said expandable portion comprises: a plurality of elements, each of said elements having two ends, wherein one of said two ends is integrally formed with the stent body and wherein another of said two ends is unattached to the stent body prior to deployment, and wherein the elements are outwardly deflectable relative to the surface of the stent body.
- 12. A stent as in claim 11, wherein the side opening is surrounded by radiopaque markers.
- 13. A stent as in claim 11, wherein the side opening is symmetrical.
- 14. A stent as in claim 11, wherein the side opening is positioned closer to the proximal end than the distal end.
- 15. A stent as in claim 11, wherein the side opening is generally circular.
- 16. A stent as in claim 1, wherein said expandable portion is metal.
- 17. A stent as in claim 6, wherein said expandable portion is metal.
- 18. A stent as in claim 11, wherein said expandable portion is metal.
- 19. A stent as in claim 1, wherein the side opening is oval.
- 20. A stent as in claim 6, wherein the side opening is oval.
- 21. A stent as in claim 11, wherein the side opening is oval.
