- a parallel port to enable connection to an external printer;
- means within said external bay for enabling said external I/O device installed within said external bay and devices connected to said parallel port to communicate with said personal computer; and
- means for sensing the type of I/O device installed within the external flexible bay and detecting the charge status of a battery pack installed within the bay and generating a charge signal in response to a low charge level.
- 2. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 1, wherein said one or more predetermined I/O devices includes a battery pack.
- 3. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 2, further including means for sensing when said external flexible bay is coupled to a personal computer whose power is on.
- 4. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 3, further means for controlling battery charging of said battery pack installed within said external flexible bay when said external flexible bay is coupled to source of external electrical power.
- 5. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 4, wherein said personal computer includes a battery pack and wherein said controlling means includes means for charging the battery pack within said personal computer under predetermined conditions.
- 6. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 5, wherein said controlling means includes means for prioritizing the battery charging of said battery pack installed within said external flexible bay and said personal computer.
- 7. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 6, wherein said prioritizing means includes means for determining the charge level of said battery pack installed within said external flexible bay.
- 8. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 7, wherein said prioritizing means includes means for enabling the battery pack within the personal computer to be charged only after the battery pack installed within the external flexible bay is charged above a predetermined level.
- 9. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 5, wherein said controlling means includes means for disabling charging of said battery pack installed within personal computer when said battery pack installed within said external flexible bay is being charged.
- 10. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 5, wherein said controlling means includes means for disabling charging of said battery pack installed within said external flexible bay when said battery pack within said personal computer is being charged.
- 11. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 1, wherein said one or more predetermined I/O devices includes a predetermined disk drive.
- 12. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 11, wherein said predetermined disk drive is a floppy disk drive.
- 13. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 1, wherein said predetermined I/O device is a printer.
- 14. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 1, further including means for detecting when an external I/O device is connected to said external flexible bay.
- 15. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 14, further including means for disabling the external I/O device installed within said external flexible bay under predetermined conditions.
- 16. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 15, wherein said predetermined conditions include a condition when a disk drive is installed within said external flexible bay.
- 17. An external flexible bay system as recited in claim 1, further includes means for providing a predetermined first mode of operation for enabling external devices connected to said parallel port on said external I/O devices installed within said external flexible bay and a second mode of operation for enabling predetermined external I/O devices installed within said external flexible bay and disabling predetermined external I/O devices connected to said parallel port on said external flexible bay.
- 18. An external flexible bay as recited in claim 1, wherein said predetermined I/O device are sized and configured to be installed in a personal computer.
- 19. An external flexible bay system for a personal computer comprising:
- an external bay adapted to be detachably connected to a personal computer;
- one or more predetermined input-output (I/O) devices, having a common form defined by said external bay, adapted to be removably and interchangeably received within said external bay;
- a peripheral device port to enable connection to external peripheral devices not received within said external bay;
- circuitry within said external bay for enabling said external I/O devices installed within said external bay, and devices attached to said peripheral device port, to communicate with said personal computer; and
- circuitry for detecting when an external I/O devices is connected to said external flexible bay.
- 20. An external flexible bay as recited in claim 19, wherein said one or more connectors are sized and configured to correspond to one or more connectors in a personal computer.
- 21. An external bay system for a computer comprising:
- an external bay adapted to connect to said computer and to interchangeably receive a predetermined plurality of input-output (I/O) device types, each of said I/O device types, having a common form defined by said external bay, and being capable of providing a functionality distinct from that of other of said I/O device types;
- a peripheral device port to enable connection to external peripheral devices not received within said external bay;
- an input-output (I/O) device selected from said predetermined I/O device types and adapted to be removably received within said external bay; and
- circuitry within said external bay permitting said I/O device bay, and devices attached to said peripheral device port to communicate with said computer.
- 22. The external bay system of claim 21, wherein said predetermined I/O device types include I/O devices selected from the group consisting of a battery pack and a disk drive.
