Claims
- 1. A liquid rinse added or solid particulate rinse added fabric softening composition capable of reducing the transfer of dyes during subsequent wash cycles, comprising:
- I. from about 3% to about 90% of fabric softening agent; and
- II. from about 0.03% to about 80% of water-soluble polymeric dye transfer inhibitor, selected from the group consisting of:
- (A) polymers, which are not enzymes, with one or more monomeric units containing at least one .dbd.N--C(.dbd.O)-- group having an average molecular weight of from about 500 to about 100,000;
- (B) polymers with one or more monomeric units containing at least one N-oxide group having an average molecular weight of from about 500 to about 1,000,000;
- (C) polymers containing both .dbd.N--C(.dbd.O)-- and N-oxide groups of (A) and (B);
- (D) mixtures thereof; and
- wherein the composition is essentially free of aerosol propellant, bleach, sachets containing an active ingredient, and anionic surfactant; and additionally when the composition is a liquid composition, and the fabric softening agent is methyl-1-oleylamidoethyl-2-oleylimidazolinium methosulfate, or analogous agent, the composition is essentially free of large amounts of highly ethoxylated material, propylated material, or mixtures thereof.
- 2. The fabric softening composition according to claim 1 wherein said dye transfer inhibitor is polyvinylpyrrolidone.
- 3. The fabric softening composition according to claim 1 wherein said dye transfer inhibitor is poly(4-vinylpyridine N-oxide).
- 4. Liquid rinse-added composition according to claim 1 comprising:
- I. from about 3% to about 50% fabric softening agent; and
- II. from about 0.03% to about 25% of said dye transfer inhibitor.
- 5. The liquid composition according to claim 4 wherein said dye transfer inhibitor is (A) having an average molecular weight of from about 500 to about 40,000.
- 6. The liquid composition according to claim 5 wherein said dye transfer inhibitor has an average molecular weight of from about 1,000 to about 30,000.
- 7. The liquid composition according to claim 4 wherein said dye transfer inhibitor is polyvinylpyrrolidone.
- 8. The liquid composition according to claim 4 wherein said dye transfer inhibitor is (B) having an average molecular weight of from about 1,000 to about 100,000.
- 9. The liquid composition according to claim 8 wherein said dye transfer inhibitor has an average molecular weight of from about 2,000 to about 100,000.
- 10. The liquid composition according to claim 4 wherein said dye transfer inhibitor is poly(4-vinylpyridine N-oxide).
- 11. The process of making the liquid composition of claim 4 comprising the following steps:
- (a) Adding dye transfer inhibitor to the water seat, the water seat having a temperature of from about 100.degree. F. to about 190.degree. F.;
- (b) Adding the fabric softening agent into the water seat with agitation;
- (c) Optionally adding a viscosity control agent; and
- (d) Cooling the composition.
- 12. The process of claim 11 in the dye transfer inhibitor is added after Step (b) but before Step (c).
- 13. The solid particulate composition according to claim 1 comprising:
- I. from about 20% to about 90% fabric softening agent; and
- II. from about 0.1% to about 80% said dye transfer inhibitor.
- 14. The solid particulate composition according to claim 13 wherein the fabric softening agent is from about 30% to about 70% and said dye transfer inhibitor is from about 0.5% to about 25%.
- 15. The solid, particulate composition according to claim 13 wherein said dye transfer inhibitor is (A) having an average molecular weight of from about 500 to about 40,000.
- 16. The solid, particulate composition according to claim 15 wherein said dye transfer inhibitor has an average molecular weight of from about 1,000 to about 30,000.
- 17. The solid, particulate composition according to claim 13 wherein said dye transfer inhibitor is polyvinylpyrrolidone.
- 18. The solid, particulate composition according to claim 13 wherein said dye transfer inhibitor is (B) having an average molecular weight of from about 1,000 to about 100,000.
- 19. The solid, particulate composition according to claim 18 wherein said dye transfer inhibitor has an average molecular weight of from about 2,000 about 100,000.
- 20. The solid, particulate composition according to claim 18 wherein said dye transfer inhibitor is poly(4-vinylpyridine N-oxide).
