Claims
- 1. A display comprising:a plurality of fibers disposed in side-by-side arrangement to define a viewing surface of the display; a plurality of light-emitting elements disposed along a surface of each of said plurality of fibers opposite the viewing surface of the display, each said light-emitting element having at least a first electrode at which an electrical signal is applied to cause said light-emitting element to emit light; and a plurality of at least first electrical conductors coupled to the first electrodes of said plurality of light-emitting elements to apply at least first electrical signals representative of information to be displayed thereto, thereby causing said light-emitting elements to emit light to display the information on the viewing surface.
- 2. The display of claim 1 further comprising a first electrical drive circuit for providing said first information-representative signals.
- 3. The display of claim 1 wherein said plurality of light-emitting elements comprises: a layer of light-emitting material disposed on the surface of each of said plurality of fibers opposite the viewing surface of the display; and wherein the first electrodes of said plurality of light-emitting elements are disposed on said layer of light-emitting material.
- 4. The display of claim 3 wherein said plurality of light-emitting elements further comprises a second electrode in electrical contact with said layer of light-emitting material.
- 5. The display of claim 4 wherein said plurality of at least first electrical conductors further includes second conductors coupling second signals representative of the information to be displayed to the second electrode of said plurality of light-emitting elements.
- 6. The display of claim 5 further comprising a second electrical drive circuit for providing said second information-representative signals.
- 7. The display of claim 1 wherein said plurality of at least first electrical conductors comprises an electrical circuit board including the plurality of first electrical conductors and a plurality of electrical interconnections coupled between respective ones of the plurality of first electrical conductors and respective first electrodes of corresponding ones of the plurality of light-emitting elements.
- 8. The display of claim 7 wherein said electrical circuit board is formed of one of a rigid circuit board material, a ceramic circuit board material, a ceramic circuit board material on a metal base, a flexible circuit board material, and a transparent circuit board material.
- 9. The display of claim 7 wherein said plurality of electrical interconnections are formed of an electrically-conductive adhesive.
- 10. The display of claim 7 wherein said plurality of electrical interconnections couple to said respective first electrodes of corresponding ones of the plurality of light-emitting elements at one of one end of the fiber and at both ends of the fiber.
- 11. A fiber-based display comprising:a plurality of transparent fibers disposed in side-by-side arrangement to define a viewing surface of the fiber-optic display; a plurality of light-emitting elements disposed along a surface of each of said plurality of transparent fibers opposite the viewing surface of the fiber-optic display, each said light-emitting element having first and second electrodes between which an electrical signal is applied to cause said light-emitting element to emit light; a source of first and second electrical signals representative of information to be displayed; and at least one electrical circuit board including: a plurality of first electrical conductors coupled between said source and the first electrodes of said plurality of light-emitting elements of each particular transparent fiber to apply the first electrical signal thereto, and a plurality of second electrical conductors coupled between said source and the respective second electrodes of corresponding ones of said plurality of light-emitting elements of a group of adjacent ones of said plurality of transparent fibers to apply the second electrical signal thereto; thereby causing said light-emitting elements to emit light to display the information on the viewing surface.
- 12. The fiber-based display of claim 1 wherein said source includes at least one first electrical drive circuit on said at least one electrical circuit board for providing said first electrical signals.
- 13. The fiber-based display of claim 11 wherein said the first electrical signal is applied to the first electrodes at one of one end and both ends of each said transparent fiber.
- 14. The fiber-based display of claim 11 wherein said plurality of light-emitting elements comprises: a first electrode disposed along the surface of each of said plurality of fibers opposite the viewing surface of the fiber-based display, a layer of light-emitting material disposed on said first electrode; and a plurality of second electrodes of said plurality of light-emitting elements disposed on said layer of light-emitting material.
- 15. The fiber-based display of claim 11 wherein said source includes at least a second electrical circuit board having the plurality of second electrical conductors disposed thereon, and further comprising a plurality of electrical interconnections coupled between respective ones of the plurality of second electrical conductors and respective second electrodes of corresponding ones of the plurality of light-emitting elements.
- 16. The fiber-based display of claim 15 wherein said source includes at least one second electrical drive circuit on said at least second electrical circuit board for providing said second electrical signals.
- 17. The fiber-based display of claim 15 wherein said plurality of electrical interconnections are formed of an electrically-conductive adhesive.
- 18. The fiber-based display of claim 15 wherein said at least one of said at least one and said at least second electrical circuit boards is formed of one of a rigid circuit board material, a ceramic circuit board material, a ceramic circuit board material on a metal base, a flexible circuit board material, and a transparent circuit board material.
- 19. A display comprising:an electrical circuit substrate having a plurality of data line conductors in a central region of a first surface thereof and having a plurality of select line conductors proximate at least one edge thereof; a plurality of light-emitting transparent fibers disposed on the first surface of said electrical circuit substrate in side-by side relationship over at least the central region thereof, each said light-emitting transparent fiber comprising: a transparent fiber disposed on said first surface to define a viewing surface of the display, and having first and second ends; a plurality of light-emitting elements disposed along a surface of said transparent fiber proximate said electrical circuit substrate and opposite the viewing surface of the display, each said light-emitting element having first and second electrodes at which electrical select and data signals are respectively applied to cause said light-emitting elements to emit light; means for connecting the first electrodes of said light-emitting fibers to said select line conductors and said second electrodes to said data line conductors; a plurality of data line drive circuits responsive to data signals representative of information to be displayed for applying the data signals to said data line conductors; and a plurality of select line drive circuits responsive to select signals representative of information to be displayed for applying select signals to said select line conductors.
- 20. The display of claim 19 wherein said means for connecting includes an electrically-conductive adhesive connections.
- 21. The display of claim 19 wherein said electrical circuit substrate is formed of one of a rigid circuit board material, a ceramic circuit board material, a ceramic circuit board material on a metal base, and a flexible circuit board material, and a transparent circuit board material.
- 22. The display of claim 19 wherein said means for connecting connects said select line conductors to the first electrode at one or both of the first and second ends of said transparent fiber.
- 23. A display comprising:a plurality of light-emitting transparent fibers disposed in side-by side relationship to define a viewing surface of the display, each said light-emitting transparent fiber comprising: an elongated transparent fiber having first and second ends; a plurality of light-emitting elements disposed along a surface of said transparent fiber, each said light-emitting element having first and second electrodes at which electrical select and data signals are respectively applied to cause said light-emitting elements to emit light; a plurality of first electrical circuit boards each having a plurality of data line conductors thereon; at least one second electrical circuit substrate having a plurality of select line conductors thereon; means for connecting the first electrodes of said light-emitting transparent fibers to said select line conductors of said at least one second electrical circuit substrate, and for connecting the second electrodes of said light-emitting transparent fibers to said data line conductors of said plurality of first electrical circuit boards; a plurality of data line drive circuits responsive to data signals representative of information to be displayed for applying the data signals to said data line conductors; and a plurality of select line drive circuits responsive to select signals representative of information to be displayed for applying select signals to said select line conductors.
- 24. The display of claim 23 wherein said means for connecting includes anisotropic electrically-conductive adhesive connections.
- 25. The display of claim 23 wherein said first and second electrical circuit substrates are each formed of one of a rigid circuit board material, a ceramic circuit board material, a ceramic circuit board material on a metal base, a flexible circuit board material, and a transparent circuit board material.
- 26. The display of claim 23 wherein said means for connecting connects said select line conductors to the first electrode at one or both of the first and second ends of said elongated transparent fiber.
