Claims
- 1. A fiber optic clamp assembly for precisely aligning a fiber bundle with a laser diode in a sealable enclosure, comprising:
a housing for receiving a fiber bundle, a gasket seal positionable between said housing and said enclosure; and a pressure collar, said pressure collar for urging said seal against said enclosure, said collar being free to move within said housing when said housing is made up to said enclosure after alignment of said bundle with said laser diode.
- 2. A fiber optic clamp assembly according to claim 1 wherein said fiber bundle is clamped to said housing.
- 3. A fiber optic clamp assembly according to claim 1 wherein said gasket seal is compressible by said collar.
- 4. A fiber optic clamp assembly according to claim 3 wherein said gasket seal has an O-ring cross-section.
- 5. A fiber optic clamp assembly according to claim 1 wherein said housing has a recess and wherein said pressure collar is slidably mounted within said recess.
- 6. A fiber optic clamp assembly for use with an ultra-precision translation stage to align a fiber optical bundle with a laser diode mounted in a sealable enclosure, comprising:
a housing for receiving a fiber bundle, said housing being movable by said translation stage relative to said sealable enclosure; a compressible seal positionable between said housing and said enclosure; and a pressure collar, said pressure collar for urging said seal against said enclosure, said collar being freely movable within said housing so as not to load said translation stage when said housing is being moved by said translation stage to align said bundle with said laser diode, said collar being free to move within said housing to compress said flexible seal when said housing is made up to said enclosure after alignment of said bundle with said laser diode.
- 7. A fiber optic clamp assembly according to claim 6, wherein said fiber bundle is clamped to said housing.
- 8. A fiber optic clamp assembly according to claim 6, wherein said compressible seal is an O-ring gasket.
- 9. A fiber optic clamp assembly according to claim 8, wherein said translation stage is lockable after said bundle is aligned with said laser diode and wherein said compression collar compresses said O-ring at least 15% when said collar is moved after said translation stage is locked without disturbing the alignment.
- 10. A fiber optic clamp assembly according to claim 6, wherein said compression collar compresses said compressible seal at least 20%.
