Claims
- 1. A method of forming polymerized soil plugs for growing plants therein comprising the steps of providing at least two sets of mold elements that when joined form a set of mold cavities, moving said sets of mold elements along a first path with said mold elements joined to form said set of mold cavities and thereafter moving said sets of mold elements along the second path wherein said mold elements are separated to facilitate the removal of molded soil plugs therefrom and to facilitate cleaning thereof, filling of each of said mold cavities along the first portion of said first path with a slurry of foam-forming synthetic organic resin and a quantity of particles of soil mix, separating said sets of mold elements at the exit from said first path to remove the molded soil plugs therefrom, cleaning said sets of mold elements during the first portion of movement along said second path, and thereafter applying a non-phytotoxic resin release agent at least to the surfaces of the mold elements forming said mold cavities.
- 2. The method of forming soil plugs set forth in claim 1, wherein the mold cavities are open at the upper ends thereof, and further comprising the step of striking the excess of slurry from the upper end of said mold cavities subsequent to filling thereof so as to control the length of the soil plugs thus formed.
- 3. A molding system for forming polymerized soil plugs for growing plants therein comprising at least two mold element conveyors arranged to operate continually, at least two sets of mold elements respectively mounted upon said conveyors, said sets of mold elements during one portion of the path of travel of said conveyors joining to form a set of mold cavities for soil plugs and during another portion of the path of travel of said conveyors being separated to facilitate removal of the molded soil plugs therefrom and to facilitate cleaning thereof, filling means adjacent to said conveyors just beyond the point where said mold elements join to form said mold cavities for inserting into the mold cavities formed by the joined mold elements a slurry of foam-forming synthetic organic plastic resin and a quantity of particles of soil mix, a cleaning station adjacent to said conveyors at the beginning of said another portion of the path of travel thereof and substantially immediately after the separation of said mold elements for cleaning said sets of mold elements, and a release agent applying station along said another portion of the path of travel of said conveyors beyond said cleaning station for applying a non-phytotoxic resin release agent at least to the surfaces of said mold elements forming said mold cavities.
- 4. The molding system for forming soil plugs set forth in claim 3, wherein the upper ends of the mold cavities formed by said mold are open, and further comprising a striker member adjacent to said conveyors and downstream from said filling means for removing excess slurry from the upper ends of said mold cavities.
- 5. A molding system for forming an interconnected array of polymerized soil plugs for growing plants therein comprising at least two mold element conveyors arranged to operate continually, at least two sets of mold elements respectively mounted upon said conveyors, said sets of mold elements during one portion of the path of travel of said conveyors joining to form a set of mold cavities for soil plugs and during another portion of the path of travel of said conveyors being separated to facilitate removal of the mold soil plugs therefrom and to facilitate cleaning thereof, strip supplying means adjacent to said conveyors at the beginning of said one portion of the path of travel thereof for inserting a strip between said sets of mold elements and into the mold cavities formed thereby, filling means adjacent to said conveyors just beyond the point where said mold elements join to form mold cavities for inserting into the mold cavities formed by the joined mold elements and around the portion of said strip in the mold cavity a slurry of foam-forming synthetic organic resin and a quantity of particles of soil mix, a cleaning station adjacent to said conveyors at the beginning of said another portion of the path of travel thereof and substantially immediately after the separation of said mold elements for cleaning said sets of mold elements, and a release agent applying station along said another portion of the path of travel of said conveyors beyond said cleaning station for applying a non-phytotoxic resin release agent at least to the surfaces of said mold elements forming said mold cavities.
- 6. A molding system for forming polymerized soil plugs with seeds therein comprising at least two mold element conveyors arranged to operate continually, a set of bottom mold elements and at least one set of side mold elements respectively mounted upon said conveyors, said sets of bottom and side mold elements during one portion of the path of travel of said conveyors joining to form a set of mold cavities for soil plugs and during another portion of the path of travel of said conveyors being separated to facilitate removal of the molded soil plugs therefrom and to facilitate cleaning thereof, each of said bottom mold elements having an air passage therethrough and a seed pocket disposed in communication both with said air passage, a seed box adjacent to the exit end of said another portion of the path of travel of said bottom mold element conveyor for receiving said seed pocket and placing seed in contact with the seed pocket on said bottom mold elements, a source of vacuum in communication with said air passage while each of said seed pockets is in said seed box and continuing until said bottom mold element is positioned with said seed pocket at the upper end thereof, filling means adjacent to said conveyors just beyond the point where said mold elements join to form said mold cavities for inserting therein and around the seed in said seed pocket a slurry of foam-forming synthetic organic plastic resin and a quantity of particles of soil mass, a cleaning station adjacent to said conveyors at the beginning of said another portion of the path of travel thereof and substantially immediately after the separation of said mold elements for cleaning said sets of mold elements, and a release agent applying station along said another portion of the path of travel of said conveyors beyond said cleaning station for applying a non-phytotoxic resin release agent at least to the surfaces of said mold elements forming said mold cavities.
- 7. A molding system for forming polymerized soil plugs for growing plants therein comprising at least two mold element conveyors arranged to operate continually, a set of bottom mold elements and at least one set of side mold elements respectively mounted upon said conveyors, said sets of bottom and side mold elements during one portion of the path of travel of said conveyors joining to form a set of mold cavities for soil plugs and during another portion of the path of travel of said conveyors being separated to facilitate removal of the molded soil plugs therefrom and to facilitate cleaning thereof, each of said bottom mold elements having an air passage therethrough and a seed pocket disposed in communication with said air passage, a seeding station adjacent to said conveyors and comprising a non-magnetic plate having a magnet disposed therebelow and adapted to carry thereon seeds having a coating of magnetizable dust thereon so as to cause such seed to stand upright upon said plate over said magnet, a source of vacuum in communication with said air passage while each of said seed pockets is over said plate and continuing until said bottom mold element is positioned with said seed pocket at the upper end thereof, filling means adjacent to said conveyors just beyond the point where said mold elements join to form said mold cavities for inserting therein and around the seed in said seed pocket a slurry of foam-forming synthetic organic plastic resin and a quantity of particles of soil mass, a cleaning station adjacent to said conveyors at the beginning of said another portion of the path of travel thereof and substantially immediately after the separation of said mold elements for cleaning said sets of mold elements, and a release agent applying station along said another portion of the path of travel of said conveyors beyond said cleaning station for applying a non-phytotoxic resin release agent at least to the surfaces of said mold elements forming said mold cavities.
- 8. A molding system for forming polymerized soil plugs for growing plants therein comprising at least two mold element conveyors arranged to operate continually, at least two sets of mold elements respectively mounted upon said conveyors, said sets of mold elements during one portion of the path of travel of said conveyors joining to form a set of mold cavities for soil plugs and during another portion of the path of travel of said conveyors being separated to facilitate removal of the molded soil plugs therefrom and to facilitate cleaning thereof, at least one of said mold elements having a mold member thereon for molding a seed recess in each soil plug formed in said mold cavities, filling means adjacent to said conveyors just beyond the point where said mold elements join to form said mold cavities for inserting into the mold cavities formed by the joined mold elements a slurry of foam-forming synthetic organic plastic resin and a quantity of particles of soil mix, a cleaning station adjacent to said conveyors at the beginning of said another portion of the path of travel thereof and substantially immediately after the separation of said mold elements for cleaning said sets of mold elements, a release agent applying station along said another portion of the path of travel of said conveyors beyond said cleaning station for applying a non-phytotoxic resin release agent at least to the surfaces of said mold elements forming said mold cavities, an inverting station for inverting said soil plugs as they are removed from said mold elements to place the seed recesses therein disposed upwardly, and a gravity seeder for feeding a seed into each of said seed recesses as said soil plugs leave said mold elements.
- 9. A molding system for forming a group of polymerized soil plugs for growing plants therein comprising a conveyor arranged to operate essentially continually, an upper mold element for molding at least the side walls of a group of soil plugs, a lower mold element for molding the upper ends of a group of soil plugs and including mold surfaces forming a seed recess in the upper end of each soil plug, means for mounting said mold elements on said conveyor for movement therewith and to form mold cavities for molding a group of soil plugs, a position control mechanism for moving said mold elements toward and away from each other during the molding operation, filling means adjacent to said conveyor for inserting into the mold cavities formed by said mold elements a slurry of foam-forming synthetic organic plastic resin and a quantity of particles of soil mix when said control mechanism has said mold elements in an intermediate position, striking mechanism adjacent to the upper ends of the upper mold element with said control mechanism in a retracted position of said mold elements to permit expansion of the polymerized soil plugs and removal of the excess material from the upper ends of the mold cavities, and a separating station for separating the group of soil plugs from said lower mold element.
- 10. The molding system set forth in claim 9, and further comprising a resin curing station disposed between said striking mechanism and said separating station further to cure the resin in said soil plugs.
- 11. The molding system set forth in claim 9, and further comprising an inverting station beyond said separating station for inverting the group of soil plugs, and a seeding station for depositing at least one seed in each of the seed recesses of the now upper ends of said soil plugs.
- 12. The molding system set forth in claim 9, and further comprising mechanism for inserting between said mold elements an interlocking grid of strips, whereby to mold said plugs around said strips to provide an interconnected mat of soil plugs.
- 13. A molding system for forming polymerized soil plugs for growing plants therein comprising at least three mold element conveyors arranged to operate continually, at least three sets of mold elements respectively mounted upon said conveyors and including a set of bottom mold elements and at least two sets of side mold elements, said sets of mold elements during one portion of the path of travel of said conveyors joining to form a set of mold cavities for soil plugs and during another portion of the path of travel of said conveyors being separated to facilitate removal of the molded soil plugs therefrom and to facilitate the cleaning thereof, said bottom mold elements each having a mold member for forming a seed recess in one end of the soil plug molded in the mold cavity, filling means adjacent to said conveyors just beyond the point where said mold elements join to form said mold cavities for inserting into the mold cavities formed by the joined mold elements a slurry of foam-forming synthetic organic resin and a quantity of particles of soil mix, a cleaning station adjacent to said conveyors at the beginning of said another portion of the path of travel thereof and substantially immediately after the separation of said mold elements for cleaning said set of mold elements, and a release agent applying station along said another portion of the path of travel of said conveyors beyond said cleaning station for applying a non-phytotoxic resin release agent at least to the surfaces of said mold elements forming said mold cavities.
