Claims
- 1. A flame retardant polymer latex coating composition comprising ring-brominated aromatic monomer units of the formula (I): ##STR7## and alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer units of the formula (II): ##STR8## in which X=1 to 4, R.sub.1 is --H or --CH.sub.3, R.sub.2 is --H or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and R.sub.3 is an alkyl group having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, said ring-brominated aromatic monomer units including an average of at least about 1.5 bromines per unit, said flame retardant polymer latex coating composition having a glass transition temperature of between -33.4.degree. C. and 25.4.degree. C., and in which the ring-brominated aromatic monomer units are present in an amount to provide from 7 to 20 percent bromine by weight of the overall composition.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 in which the ring-brominated aromatic monomer units include monobrominated units and polybrominated units, and in which no more than about 20% of the ring-brominated aromatic monomer units are monobrominated units.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 in which the ratio of monobrominated and polybrominated units is such that the corresponding mixture of the unsaturated ring-brominated aromatic monomers is liquid at room temperature.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 in which the ring-brominated monomer units are present in an amount to provide from about 9 weight percent bromine to about 18 weight percent bromine in the flame retardant polymer latex coating composition.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 and consisting essentially of the ring-brominated aromatic monomer units and the alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer units.
- 6. A flame retardant polymer latex coating composition comprising ring-brominated aromatic monomer units of the formula (I): ##STR9## and alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer units of the formula (II): ##STR10## and further comprising third monomer units selected from the group consisting of:
- (a) acid ester monomer units of the formula (III): ##STR11## (b) non-brominated aromatic monomer units of the formula (IV): ##STR12## and (c) carboxylic or dicarboxylic acid monomer units of the formula (V): ##STR13## in which X=1 to 4, R.sub.1 is --H or --CH.sub.3, R.sub.2 is --H or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and R.sub.3 is an alkyl group having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and R.sub.4 is an alkyl group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, said ring-brominated aromatic monomer units including an average of at least about 1.5 bromines per unit, said flame retardant polymer latex coating composition having a glass transition temperature of between -33.4.degree. C. and 25.4.degree. C., and in which the ring-brominated aromatic monomer units are present in an amount to provide from 7 to 20 percent bromine by weight of the overall composition.
- 7. The composition of claim 6 and consisting essentially of the ring-brominated aromatic monomer units, the alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer units and the third monomer units selected from the group consisting of: (a) acid ester monomer units, (b) non-brominated aromatic monomer units and (c) carboxylic or dicarboxylic acid monomer units.
- 8. The composition of claim 6 in which the ring-brominated monomer units are present in an amount to provide from 9 to 18 weight percent bromine.
- 9. The composition of claim 6 in which the ratio of monobrominated and polybrominated units is such that the corresponding mixture of the unsaturated ring-brominated aromatic monomers is liquid at room temperature.
- 10. The composition of claim 6 and consisting essentially of the ring-brominated aromatic monomer units, the alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer units and the third monomer units selected from the group consisting of: (a) acid ester monomer units, (b) non-brominated aromatic monomer units and (c) carboxylic or dicarboxylic acid monomer units.
- 11. A flame retardant polymer latex coating composition comprising ring-brominated aromatic monomer units of the formula (I): ##STR14## and alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer units of the formula (II): ##STR15## non-brominated aromatic monomer units of the formula (IV): ##STR16## and carboxylic or dicarboxylic acid monomer units of the formula (V): ##STR17## in which X=1 to 4, R.sub.1 is --H or --CH.sub.3, R.sub.2 is --H or an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and R.sub.3 is an alkyl group having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, said ring-brominated aromatic monomer units including an average of at least about 1.5 bromines per unit, said flame retardant polymer latex coating composition having a glass transition temperature of between -33.4.degree. C. and 25.4.degree. C., and in which the ring-brominated aromatic monomer units are present in an amount to provide from 7 to 20 percent bromine by weight of the overall composition.
- 12. The composition of claim 11 in which the ring-brominated aromatic monomer units include monobrominated units and polybrominated units, and in which no more than about 20% of the ring-brominated aromatic monomer units are monobrominated units.
- 13. The composition of claim 11 in which the ratio of monobrominated and polybrominated units is such that the corresponding mixture of the unsaturated ring-brominated aromatic monomers is liquid at room temperature.
- 14. The composition of claim 11 and consisting essentially of the ring-brominated aromatic monomer units, the alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer units, the non-brominated aromatic monomer units and the carboxylic or dicarboxylic acid monomer units.
