Claims
- 1. A driving method for a flat display wherein a display frame comprises an associated plurality of display sub-frames which individually produce respective, different sub-frame display brightness levels and are subject to selection in accordance with display data to provide, as a composite of the selected sub-frame brightness levels, a corresponding brightness level of the associated single display frame, said driving method comprising:
- detecting a value of the display current consumed by the flat display in producing a display in accordance with the display data;
- comparing the detected display current value with a reference current value designating an acceptable brightness level and producing a comparison output when the detected display current value exceeds the reference current value; and
- altering the selection of the plurality of display sub-frames associated with a display frame, as defined by the display data, in response to and in accordance with the comparison output for limiting the brightness level of the display to the acceptable brightness level.
- 2. A driving method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:
- defining plural, different comparison outputs corresponding to plural, different amounts by which the detected display current value exceeds the reference current value and correlating the plural, different comparison outputs to the plurality of display sub-frames associated with a display frame; and
- performing the altering step in accordance with reducing the number of the plurality of display sub-frames selected for an associated display frame in respective relationship to the plural, different comparison outputs for maintaining the display at the acceptable brightness level.
- 3. A driving method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:
- producing an average value of plural display current values detected for respective, plural display frames; and
- using the detected average value as the detected display current value for comparison with the reference current value.
- 4. A driving method for a flat display wherein a single display frame comprises a plurality of associated display sub-frames having respective, plural and different brightness levels produced by corresponding, plural and different display currents of respective, different current values and the brightness level of a single display frame, as specified by respective display data, is determined in accordance with a corresponding selection of one or more of the plurality of associated display sub-frames and a composite of the corresponding component display currents, said driving method comprising:
- producing a display of the display data of each single display frame at a corresponding brightness as defined by the respective display data to provide a composite display current to the flat display having a current value producing the corresponding brightness level;
- detecting the value of the display current supplied to the flat display during each display frame when producing a corresponding display of display data on the flat display;
- defining a reference current value corresponding to a maximum brightness level of a display and comparing the detected display current value with the reference current value and producing a comparison output when the detected display current value exceeds the reference current value; and
- reducing the number of selected, associated sub-frames of a single display frame, in response to and in accordance with the comparison output, for maintaining the display at the acceptable brightness level.
- 5. A driving method as recited in claim 4, further comprising:
- defining plural, different comparison outputs corresponding to successively greater differences between the detected display current value and the reference current value and correlating the plural, different comparison outputs to the plural sub-frames of a single display frame; and
- performing the altering step in accordance with successively limiting the number of the plurality of display sub-frames selected for an associated, single display frame in respective relationship to the plural, different comparison outputs for maintaining the display at the acceptable brightness level.
- 6. A driving method as recited in claim 4, further comprising producing an average value of the detected display current values, for plural single display frames, for comparison with the reference current value.
- 7. A method of brightness level control in a flat display in which each of successive display frames, corresponding respectively to successive scanning lines of the display, is segmented temporally into an associated plurality of successive display sub-frames of respective, different brightness levels and in which a display brightness level in each display frame is specified by display data defining a corresponding selection of the associated plurality of display sub-frames which, as a composite, reproduce the display data of the display frame at the brightness level specified therefor by the display data, the method comprising:
- detecting a value of an addressing current which is consumed by the flat display for producing a display thereon in accordance with the display data;
- comparing the detected addressing current value with a reference current value corresponding to a maximum brightness value of the display and producing a comparison output when the detected addressing current value exceeds the reference current value; and
- selectively disabling display sub-frames of the associated plurality of display sub-frames for each display frame, designated for selection in accordance with the display data, in response to the comparison output and thereby to limit the value of the addressing current supplied to the flat display and correspondingly limiting the brightness level of the display to the maximum brightness value.
- 8. A method as recited in claim 7, further comprising:
- detecting plural, successive address current values in respective and plural, successive frames; and
- producing an average thereof as the address current value.
- 9. A method as recited in claim 7, further comprising:
- defining plural, different comparison outputs corresponding to successively greater differences between the detected display current value and the reference current value and correlating the plural, different comparison outputs to the plural sub-frames of a single display frame; and
- performing the selective disabling step in accordance with successively limiting the number of the plurality of display sub-frames selected for an associated, single display frame in respective relationship to the plural, different comparison outputs for maintaining the display at the acceptable brightness level.
- 10. A method as recited in claim 7, wherein:
- each display frame comprises an addressing period during which at least a plurality of display cells along a corresponding display line is selected and written with display data and a sustaining discharge period during which the selected cells, written with display data, are repeatedly discharged so as to emit light and produce the display and wherein the display sub-frames of the plurality thereof associated with each display frame comprise respective, different numbers of sustaining pulses and produce respective, different display sub-frame current display values; and
- the step of selectively disabling the display sub-frames further comprises altering the selection of display sub-frames so as to alter the total number of sustaining pulses and corresponding sub-frame current values for the associated display frame, thereby to supply a composite display current of a reduced value and producing a corresponding brightness level limited to the maximum brightness value.
- 11. A method of brightness level control in a flat display wherein each of successive, individual display frames, respectively corresponding to successive scanning lines of a display of display data, is segmented temporally into an associated plurality of successive sub-frames defining respective, different addressing frequencies and corresponding display sub-frame addressing currents producing respective, different sub-frame display brightness levels, the display data defining a corresponding display brightness level for each individual display frame in accordance with specifying a selection of the associated display sub-frames, as to which a composite of the respective, different sub-frame display brightness levels thereof produces the corresponding display brightness level of the individual display frame as specified therefor by the display data, the method comprising:
- in each of successive, individual display frames and in accordance with the selection of the associated display sub-frames specified by the display data for each individual display frame, supplying the corresponding display sub-frame addressing currents, the composite of the respective display sub-frame brightness display levels of which produce the corresponding display brightness level of the associated, individual display frame specified by the display data;
- detecting a value of an addressing current supplied to the flat display in producing a display of display data thereon in accordance with, and having a display brightness level as specified by, the display data in relation to each of successive, individual display frames;
- comparing the detected addressing current value with a reference current value corresponding to a maximum brightness level of the display and producing a comparison output when the detected addressing current value exceeds the reference current value; and
- in response to the comparison output and for each individual display frame, selectively disabling a number of the associated display sub-frames specified for selection by the display data and thereby eliminating the corresponding display sub-frame addressing currents such that the composite of the respective display sub-frame brightness levels of the resulting selection of display sub-frame addressing currents is limited to the maximum brightness level.
- 12. A method of brightness control as recited in claim 11, wherein the detecting step further comprises detecting the addressing current value in each of plural successive individual display frames and producing an average thereof for an individual display frame, for use as the detected addressing current value in the comparing step.
- 13. A method as recited in claim 11, further comprising:
- defining plural, different comparison outputs corresponding to successively greater differences between the detected display current value and the reference current value and correlating the plural, different comparison outputs to the plural display sub-frames of an individual display frame; and
- performing the selective disabling step in accordance with successively limiting the number of the plurality of display sub-frames selected for an associated, individual display frame in respective relationship to the plural, different comparison outputs for maintaining the display at the acceptable brightness level.
