Claims
- 1. Apparatus for supplying liquid to a body cavity during an endoscopic procedure, which comprises:
- a) liquid supply means whose outflow flow rate is inherently inversely responsive to changes in the body cavity pressure;
- b) means for generating a body cavity pressure signal representing the pressure in said body cavity;
- c) conduit means for communicating said liquid supply means with said body cavity to deliver liquid under pressure to said body cavity;
- d) control means responsive to said body cavity pressure signal for increasing or decreasing the pressure of said liquid delivered by said liquid supply means to thereby maintain said body cavity pressure at a predetermined value;
- e) a liquid outflow cannula for insertion into said body cavity for transporting liquid from said body cavity;
- f) a tool comprising a surgical blade, a motor for operating said blade at a desired speed, and an internal passageway for the flow of liquid through said blade and said tool;
- g) a tool control means connected to said tool for generating first and second output signals representing the surgical blade in the tool and the speed of the tool motor, respectively;
- h) processor means for processing said first and second output signals and for generating a third output signal;
- i) means for transporting liquid from said body cavity via said liquid outflow cannula to and through said blade and said tool; and
- j) means for controlling the flow rate of said liquid flowing through said blade and said tool in response to said third output signal.
- 2. Apparatus for supplying liquid to a body cavity during an endoscopic procedure, which comprises:
- a) liquid supply means inherently capable of supplying liquid at a substantially constant pressure substantially independent of the flow rate of liquid delivered by the liquid supply means within a relatively wide range of flow rate;
- b) pressure sensing means for generating a body cavity pressure signal representing the pressure in said body cavity;
- c) conduit means for communicating said liquid supply means with said body cavity to deliver liquid under pressure to said body cavity;
- d) control means responsive to said body cavity pressure signal for increasing or decreasing the pressure of said liquid delivered by said liquid supply means to thereby maintain said body cavity pressure at a predetermined value;
- e) a liquid outflow cannula for insertion into said body cavity for transporting liquid from said body cavity;
- f) a tool comprising a surgical blade, a motor for operating said blade at a desired speed, and an internal passageway for the flow of liquid through said blade and said tool;
- g) a tool control means connected to said tool for generating first and second output signals representing the surgical blade in the tool and the speed of the tool motor, respectively;
- h) processor means for processing said first and second output signals and for generating a third output signal;
- i) means for transporting liquid from said body cavity via said liquid outflow cannula to and through said blade and said tool; and
- j) means for controlling the flow rate of said liquid flowing through said blade and said tool in response to said third output signal.
- 3. Apparatus for supplying liquid to a body cavity during an endoscopic procedure, which comprises:
- a) a centrifugal inflow pump for supplying liquid under pressure;
- b) means for generating a body cavity pressure signal representing the pressure in said body cavity comprising pressure sensor means in communication with liquid under pressure delivered by said centrifugal inflow pump at a location upstream of said body cavity and pressure signal processing means for calculating the value of the pressure in said body cavity from said sensed pressure and for generating a calculated body cavity pressure signal as said body cavity pressure signal;
- c) conduit means for communicating said centrifugal inflow pump with said body cavity to deliver liquid under pressure to said body cavity;
- d) control means responsive to said body cavity pressure signal for increasing or decreasing the pressure of said liquid delivered by said centrifugal inflow pump to thereby maintain said body cavity pressure at a predetermined value;
- e) a liquid outflow cannula for insertion into said body cavity and a source of suction communicating with said liquid outflow cannula for aspirating liquid from said body cavity via said liquid outflow cannula;
- f) a tool comprising a surgical blade, a motor for operating said blade at a desired speed, and an internal passageway for the flow of liquid through said blade and said tool;
- g) a tool control means connected to said tool for generating first and second output signals representing the surgical blade in the tool and the speed of the tool motor, respectively;
- h) processor means for processing said first and second output signals and for generating a third output signal;
- i) means for transporting liquid from said body cavity via said liquid outflow cannula to and through said blade and said tool; and
- j) means for controlling the flow rate of said liquid flowing through said blade and said tool in response to said third output signal.
- 4. Apparatus for supplying liquid to a body cavity during an endoscopic procedure, which comprises:
- a) liquid supply means for supplying liquid under pressure;
- b) means for generating a body cavity pressure signal representing the pressure in said body cavity comprising pressure sensor means in communication with liquid under pressure delivered by said liquid supply means at a location upstream of said body cavity and pressure signal processing means for calculating the value of the pressure in said body cavity from said sensed pressure as a function of the pressure drops between said liquid supply means to said sensor means and between said sensor means to said body cavity and for generating a calculated body cavity pressure signal as said body cavity pressure signal;
- c) conduit means for communicating said liquid supply means with said body cavity to deliver liquid under pressure to said body cavity;
- d) control means responsive to said body cavity pressure signal for increasing or decreasing the pressure of said liquid delivered by said liquid supply means to thereby maintain said body cavity pressure at a predetermined value;
- e) a liquid outflow cannula for insertion into said body cavity and a suction pump communicating with said outflow cannula for aspirating liquid from said body cavity via said liquid outflow cannula;
- f) a tool comprising a surgical blade, a motor for operating said blade at a desired speed, and an internal passageway for the flow of liquid through said blade and said tool;
- g) a tool control means connected to said tool for generating first and second output signals representing the surgical blade in the tool and the speed of the tool motor, respectively;
- h) processor means for processing said first and second output signals and for generating a third output signal;
- i) means for transporting liquid from said body cavity via said liquid outflow cannula to and through said blade and said tool; and
- j) means for controlling the flow rate of said liquid flowing through said blade and said tool in response to said third output signal.
