Claims
- 1. A device for inspecting a component comprising:
a flexible sensor that is placed against a component surface; at least one elastic support member that locates the sensor proximate to the component surface; and at least one chamber in the at least one elastic support member, the flexible sensor being pressed against the component surface when the chamber is pressurized.
- 2. The device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the sensor is an eddy current sensor.
- 3. The device as claimed in claim 2 wherein the sensor is an eddy current sensor array.
- 4. The device as claimed in claim 1 further comprising a plurality of outer support members positioned between the at least one elastic support and the sensor.
- 5. The device as claimed in claim 4 wherein the outer support members are rigid cylinders.
- 6. The device as claimed in claim 4 wherein the outer support members are elastic and conform to the shape of the component surface when the chamber is pressurized.
- 7. The device as claimed in claim 1 further comprising at lease one rigid support which positions the at least one elastic support member near the component.
- 8. The device as claimed in claim 7 wherein the rigid support is a cylindrical core and is surrounded by a plurality of elastic support members.
- 9. The device as claimed in claim 1 further comprising a compressible support layer placed between the sensor and the support members.
- 10. A device for inspecting a component comprising:
at least one flexible sensor that is placed against a component surface; at least one elastic member containing a chamber, the flexible sensor being pressed against the component surface when the chamber is pressurized; and at least one rigid support member for maintaining the sensor position proximate to the component surface.
- 11. The device as claimed in claim 10 wherein the sensor is an eddy current sensor.
- 12. The device as claimed in claim 11 wherein the sensor is an eddy current sensor array.
- 13. The device as claimed in claim 10 wherein the at least one rigid support member approximates the shape of the component surface.
- 14. The device as claimed in claim 13 further comprising a compressible support layer placed between the sensor and the at least one rigid support member.
- 15. The device as claimed in claim 10 wherein the at least one elastic member is placed behind the sensor, between the sensor and the at least one rigid support member.
- 16. The device as claimed in claim 15 further comprising a spring on the side of the at least one rigid support member opposite the at least one elastic member, and a flexible ring encircling the elastic member, rigid support, and spring.
- 17. The device as claimed in claim 16 wherein the at least one rigid support member is removable.
- 18. The device as claimed in claim 10 wherein the at least one rigid support member includes a body and an actuated portion on the side of the body opposite the sensor that translates when the at least one elastic member is pressurized, and is held in place with a spring.
- 19. The device as claimed in claim 18 wherein the at least one elastic member is placed behind the body and the actuated portion.
- 20. The device as claimed in claim 19 wherein the shape of the component surface is concave, and the actuated portion presses against component surface.
- 21. The device as claimed in claim 20 wherein the actuated portion has a roller to ease relative motion between the inspection device and the component.
- 22. The device as claimed in claim 10 wherein the at least one rigid support member forms a central core that is surrounded by a plurality of elastic members.
- 23. The device as claimed in claim 10 wherein the at least one rigid support member is placed between the pressurized chamber and the sensor.
- 24. A device for inspecting a component comprising:
at least one flexible sensor that is placed against a component surface; a compressible support layer placed behind the sensor; at least one elastic member containing a chamber, the flexible sensor being pressed against the component surface when the chamber is pressurized; and a rigid insert that approximates the shape of the component surface.
- 25. The device as claimed in claim 24 wherein the sensor is an eddy current sensor.
- 26. The device as claimed in claim 25 wherein the sensor is an eddy current sensor array.
- 27. The device as claimed in claim 24 wherein the shape of the component surface is concave, and the insert includes convex tabs to prevent contact between the insert and the component surface.
- 28. The device as claimed in claim 24 wherein the component is an engine disk slot.
- 29. The device as claimed in claim 28 wherein the inspection involves measurement of surface roughness or damage.
- 30. The device as claimed in claim 29 wherein the surface damage is fretting.
- 31. A device for inspecting a component comprising:
at least one flexible sensor that is placed against a component surface; a rigid support member that approximates the shape of the component surface; at least one first elastic member containing a chamber and placed between the sensor and rigid support member, the flexible sensor being pressed against the component surface when the chamber is pressured; and a means for supplying pressure to the chamber of the elastic member.
- 32. The device as claimed in claim 31 wherein the sensor is an eddy current sensor.
- 33. The device as claimed in claim 32 wherein the sensor is an eddy current sensor array.
- 34. The device as claimed in claim 31 further comprising a spring on the side of the rigid support member opposite the at least one first elastic member and a flexible ring encircling the elastic member, rigid support, and spring.
- 35. The device as claimed in claim 34 wherein the rigid support member is removable.
- 36. The device as claimed in claim 31 further comprising at least one second elastic member containing a chamber that is configured to be pressurized, and is mechanically connected to and sealed to the at least one first elastic member, wherein compression of the second elastic member supplies pressure to the first elastic member.
- 37. A device for inspecting a component comprising:
a flexible sensor that is placed against a component surface; a support member for adjusting the sensor position; an elastic member containing a chamber, the flexible sensor being pressed against the component surface when the chamber is pressurized; and means for supplying pressure to the chamber of the elastic member.
- 38. The device as claimed in claim 37 wherein the sensor is an eddy current sensor.
- 39. The device as claimed in claim 38 wherein the sensor is an eddy current sensor array.
- 40. The device as claimed in claim 37 wherein the support member is rigid, encloses the elastic member, and has an opening that is covered by the sensor so that pressurization of the elastic member presses the sensor against the component surface.
- 41. The device as claimed in claim 37 wherein the support member is at least one cable placed on a side of the elastic member and held in place by a flexible film, and the elastic member is positioned behind the sensor.
- 42. The device as claimed in claim 37 wherein the support member is rigid and further comprising a second rigid support positioned between the sensor and the elastic member and a flexible ring encircling the elastic member, the second rigid support, and sensor.
- 43. The device as claimed in claim 42 further comprising a compressible support layer placed between the second rigid support and the sensor.
