Claims
- 1. A fluidized bed combustor, comprising a housing having interior walls defining a chamber therein, plate means extending across the lower end of said housing chamber defining a fluidizable bed area and a reaction area thereabove, means for directing a fluidizing fluid and fuel into said fluidizable bed and reaction area for burning therein, flue means for the offtake of combustion gases connected into the top of said chamber, a plurality of substantially vertically arranged heat exchanger tube assemblies in said fluidizable bed area each including an outer tube having an upper tube closed end and an inner tube arranged within said outer tube and spaced radially inwardly therefrom and spaced below said upper outer tube closed end, supporting means associated with said plate means supporting the lower ends of said inner and outer tubes so that the lower end of said inner tube extends out of said chamber and defines a fluid discharge end and said outer tube is located above said fluid discharge end of said inner tube and defines an inlet flow passage in the space between said outer and inner tubes, a holding member interconnecting said plurality of heat exchanger tube assemblies adjacent said upper outer tube closed end, said holding member being spaced from and independent of said housing interior walls, and means for circulating a heat exchange fluid into the space between said outer and inner tubes through said inlet flow for flow upwardly in the space between said tubes in the fluidizable bed area to the top of said inner tube and then downwardly therethrough to discharge the fluid from said inner tube, said holding member comprising a collar member connected to each of said tube assemblies and a ring member connected to said collar members.
- 2. A fluidizable bed combustor, according to claim 1, wherein said plate means includes a distributor plate extending across the lower end of said chamber having a plurality of fuel and combustion air tuyeres extending therethrough and means for supplying fuel and combustion air to said tuyeres for directing them through said distributor plate below said fluidized bed area.
- 3. A fluidized bed combustor, according to claim 2, including a windbox in said chamber disposed below and spaced vertically from said distributor plate and defining a combustion air space therebetween, and means for directing combustion air into said space, said space communicating with said tuyeres in said distributor plate for the flow of air through said nozzles into the fluidized bed area.
- 4. A fluidized bed combustor according to claim 3, wherein said windbox includes first passageway means extending therethrough, means for directing combustion air through said first passageway means, said means for circulating said heat exchange fluid including second passageway means in said windbox and communicating the inner inlet of said windbox with the inlet between outer and inner heat exchanger tubes.
- 5. A fluidized bed combustor, comprising a housing having a chamber therein, plate means extending across the lower end of said housing chamber defining a fluidizable bed area and a reaction area thereabove, means for directing a fluidizable fluid and fuel into said fluidizing bed and reaction area for burning thereon, flue means for the offtake of combustion gases connected into the top of said chamber a plurality of substantially vertically arranged heat exchanger tube assemblies in said fluidizable bed area each including an outer tube having an upper outer tube closed end and an inner tube arranged within said outer tube and spaced radially inwardly therefrom and spaced below said upper outer tube closed end, supporting means associated with said plate means supporting the lower ends of said inner and outer tubes so that the lower end of said inner tube extends out of said chamber and defines a fluid discharge end and said outer tube is located above said fluid discharge end of said inner tube and defines an inlet flow passage in the space between said outer and inner tubes, and means for circulating a heat exchange fluid into the space between said outer and inner tubes through said inlet for flow upwardly in the space between said tubes in the fluidizable bed area to the top of said inner tube and then downwardly therethrough to discharge the fluid from said inner tube, said plate means including a distributor plate extending across the lower end of said chamber having a plurality of fuel and combustion air tuyeres extending therethrough and means for supplying fuel and combustion air to said tuyeres for directing them through said distributor plate below said fluidizable bed area, a windbox in said chamber disposed below and spaced vertically from said distributor plate and defining a combustion air space therebetween, and means for directing combustion air into said space said space communicating with said tuyeres in said distributor plate for the flow of air through said nozzles into the fluidized bed area, said windbox including a plurality of tube extending therethrough, means for directing combustion air through said tubes, said means for circulating said heat exchange fluid comprising a passageway defined around and between said tubes of said windbox connected to the inlet between said outer and inner heat exchanger tubes.
- 6. A fluidized combustor according to claim 5, including a lower wall closing the lower end of said chamber below said windbox, said inner tube of said heat exchanger tube assemblies including a lower end welded to said lower wall.
- 7. A fluidized bed combustor, comprising a housing having a chamber therein, and having a bottom wall, a windbox distributor plate extending across said chamber adjacent the lower end thereof and defining a solid particulate matter bed area thereabove, a windbox vertically spaced below said distributor plate and defining an air space between said windbox and said distributor plate, a plurality of combustion air tuyeres mounted in said distributor plate and communicating with said air space, said windbox having a plurality of combustion air passage tubes extending therethrough, a plate closing the lower end of said chamber below said windbox and spaced therebelow, means for directing combustion air into the space between said windbox and said plate for flow through the tubes in said windbox to said air space, means for directing coal into the said bed area, the air in said air space flowing through said tuyeres into said bed area, a plurality of bundles of substantially vertically extending heat exchanger tubes extending upwardly into the bed area, each tube comprising an inner tube for the downflow of a fluid having a lower end extending out through said bottom wall of said housing for the discharge of heated fluid and an outer tube surrounding the sides and top of said inner tube and defining a space between said sides and top of said inner tube and said outer tube for the upflow of fluid to the top of said inner tube for flow downwardly therein, said outer tube being spaced from said inner tube and having an open lower end defining an inlet into the spaced between said tubes, and means for directing fluid into the inlet between said tubes for control of the temperature of the bed and the heating of the fluid as it is passed upwardly between the tubes and then downwardly for discharge through the inner tube and through the bottom wall.
- 8. A fluidized bed combustor according to claim 7, including tubular insulation means supporting the lower end of said inner tube comprising an upper hollow tubular insulation member containing insulation therein engaged on a lower hollow tubular insulation member having insulation therein, each of said upper and lower elements having abutting end faces which are oblique so that members may migrate relative to each other to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction.
- 9. A fluidized bed combustor according to claim 8, wherein each of said upper and lower tubular elements comprises a separate section having insulation therein, the lower section having an upwardly and outwardly extending conical end face and the upper section having a downwardly and inwardly extending conical end face engaged on the end face of the lower insulation element, said insulation elements being tack welded together to position them around said inner tube and holding said inner tube to the lower wall of said fluidized bed combustor, said lower wall including a tubular extension, said extension being welded to the lower tubular insulation element and to the lower end of said inner wall and supporting the lower end of said inner wall.
- 10. A fluidized bed combustor according to claim 7, including an adapter connected to the lower end of said outer tube having an upper portion of the same diameter as said outer tube and a lower portion of wider diameter defining a step therebetween, said lower portion also having a shoulder below said step, said windbox including a receiving tubular portion into which said outer tube extends having an offset engageable with said shoulder to support said outer tube therein.
- 11. A fluidizable bed combustor according to claim 10, wherein said outer tube has a ring thereon, disposed above said adapter engageable with the tubular portion of said windbox and insulation disposed between said ring and said step portion.
- 12. A fluidizable bed combustor according to claim 7, wherein said outer tube of said heat exchanger tube bundles each include a top cap having a trunnion extension, a support member for said tube bundles including a portion having an opening therethrough through which said trunnion is engageable, and means for locking said trunnion to said support member.
- 13. A pressurized, fluidized bed according to claim 12, wherein said means for locking said trunnion to said support member comprises a ring engageable through said trunnion and being supported on said support member.
- 14. A pressurized, fluidized bed according to claim 12, wherein said support member includes a plurality of openings therein through which the trunnions of individual tube assemblies are engageable, means for locking each assembly to said support member so that all of said assemblies may be supported from each other.
- 15. A pressurized, fluidized bed combustor according to claim 7, including a shackle connected to the upper end of said heat exchanger tube to permit the lifting thereof.
- 16. A fluidized bed combustor, comprising a housing having a chamber therein, plate means extending across the lower end of said housing chamber defining a fluidizable bed and a reaction area thereabove, means for directing a fluidized fluid and fuel into said fluidizing bed and reaction area for burning therein, flue means for the offtake of combustion gases connected into the top of said chamber, a plurality of substantially vertically arranged heat exchanger tube assemblies in said fluidizable bed area each including an outer tube having an upper outer tube closed end and an inner tube arranged within said outer tube and spaced radially inwardly therefrom and spaced below said upper outer tube closed end, supporting means associated with said plate means supporting the lower ends of said inner and outer tubes so that the lower end of said inner tube extends out of said chamber and defines a fluid discharge end and said outer tube is located above said fluid discharge end of said inner tube and defines an inlet flow passage in the space between said outer and inner tubes, and means for circulating a heat exchange fluid into the space between said outer and inner tubes through said inlet for flow upwardly in the space between said tubes in the fluidizable bed area to the top of said inner tube and then downwardly therethrough to discharge the fluid from said inner tube, said housing having a separable top and bottom shell portions and support means for said housing engageable with one of said support shell portions permitting the other to be disconnected therefrom.
- 17. A fluidized bed combustor according to claim 16, wherein said support means is connected to the top shell portion permitting said bottom shell portion to be moved downwardly therefrom, said bottom shell portion containing said plate means and said support means for said heat exchanger tube assembly so that said tube assemblies may be removed therewith.
- 18. A fluidized bed combustor, comprising a housing having a chamber therein, plate means extending across the lower end of said housing chamber defining a fluidizable bed area and a reaction area thereabove, means for directing a fluidizable fluid and fuel into said fluidizing bed and reaction area for burning therein, flue means for the offtake of combustion gases connected into the top of said chamber, a plurality of substantially vertically arranged heat exchanger tube assemblies in said fluidizable bed area each including an outer tube having an upper outer tube closed end and an inner tube arranged within said outer tube and spaced radially inwardly therefrom and spaced below said upper outer tube closed end, supporting means associated with said plate means supporting the lower ends of said inner and outer tubes so that the lower end of said inner tube extends out of said chamber and defines a fluid discharge end and said outer tube is located above said fluid discharge end of said inner tube and defines an inlet flow passage in the space between said outer and inner tubes, means for circulating a heat exchange fluid into the space between said outer and inner tubes through said inlet for flow upwardly in the space between said tubes in the fluidizable bed area to the top of said inner tube and then downwardly therethrough to discharge the fluid from said inner tube, said supporting means, associated with said plate means, comprising a tubular adapter fitted to the lower end of said outer tube of said heat exchanger tube assemblies, said adapter tube having a stepped portion, said plate means including a distributor plate through which said tube assemblies extend and a windbox located below said distributor plate portion with receiving means for receiving said adapter and supporting said adapter thereon.
