Claims
- 1. An apparatus for measuring spectral and temporal fluorescence properties of tissue and cells in vivo comprising:
(a) a primary excitation light source which is directed to a tissue or cell sample, (b) an optical fiber probe which delivers light to the tissue or cell sample and collects resulting fluorescent emissions from said tissue or cell sample wherein said primary excitation light source is directed through the optical fiber probe to the tissue or cell sample; (c) a means of directing the returning fluorescent emissions from the tissue or cell sample to spectral and temporal detection schemes; (d) a spectrometer coupled ICCD which detects fluorescent emissions output from the tissue or cell sample and derives therefrom spectral fluorescence properties of the tissue or cell sample; (e) a photodetector to detect temporal fluorescent emissions output from the tissue or cell sample; and (f) a means for transiently digitizing a signal from the photodetector and deriving temporal fluorescence properties of the tissue or cell sample from the signal, said means being connected to the photodetector.
- 2. A method for measuring spectral and temporal fluorescence properties of tissue or cells simultaneously comprising:
(a) contacting a tissue or cell sample with an excitation light source; (b) exciting the tissue or cell sample with the excitation light source so that fluorescence is emitted; (c) collecting the fluorescence emitted from the sample; and (d) detecting emitted fluorescence accumulation and fluorescence decays with simultaneous spectral and temporal resolution so that spectral and temporal fluorescence properties of the tissue or cells can be determined.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein the tissue or cell sample is in vivo.
- 4. A method for detecting precancerous and cancerous changes in tissues or cells in vivo comprising measuring spectral and temporal fluorescent properties of a tissue or cell sample in vivo simultaneously in accordance with the method of claim 3; and comparing the measured spectral and temporal fluorescent properties of the tissue or cell sample with spectral and temporal fluorescent properties of normal, healthy tissue or cells, wherein changes in endogenous fluorescence of the tissue of cell sample compared to healthy tissue or cells is indicative of a precancerous or cancerous change.
