Claims
- 1. A magneto-optical head for transmission of light along an optical path located between a source and a storage location, comprising:
- a slider body, wherein said slider body comprises a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end disposed at said periphery, and a corner disposed at said second end, and wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed to be closer to said second end than said first end and at said corner, and wherein said at least one optical element comprises a steerable mirror.
- 2. A magneto-optical head for transmission of light along an optical path located between a source and a storage location comprising:
- a slider body, wherein said slider body comprises, a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end disposed along said periphery, and a central axis, wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end, and wherein said central axis is disposed so as to generally bisect said slider body in a direction from said first end to said second end; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said light passes from said source along said optical path in a direction from said first end to said second end, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed to be closer to said second end than said first end and offset from said central axis, and wherein said at least one optical element comprises an optical fiber.
- 3. A magneto-optical head for transmission of light along an optical path located between a source and a storage location, comprising:
- a slider body, wherein said slider body comprises a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end along said periphery, and a central axis, wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end, and wherein said central axis is disposed so as to generally bisect said slider body in a direction from said first end to said second end; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said light passes from said source along said optical path in a direction from said first end to said second end, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed to be closer to said second end than said first end and offset from said central axis, and wherein said at least one optical element comprises a steerable mirror.
- 4. The head as recited in claim 3, wherein said steerable mirror comprises a micro-machined steerable mirror.
- 5. An optical head for use in an optical path located between a source and a magneto-optical storage location, comprising:
- a slider body, wherein said slider body comprises a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end disposed along said periphery, wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end, and wherein said source provides a light that passes along said optical path in a direction from said first end to said second end;
- a magnetic coil, wherein said magnetic coil is coupled to said body; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, and wherein said at least one optical element is disposed to be closer to said second end than first end, and wherein said at least one optical element comprises a steerable mirror.
- 6. The optical head as recited in claim 5, wherein said steerable mirror comprises a micro-machined steerable mirror.
- 7. An optical head for use in an optical path located between a source and a magneto-optical storage location, comprising:
- a slider body, wherein said slider body comprises a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end disposed along said periphery, a corner disposed at said second end, and a central axis, wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end, and wherein said central axis is disposed so as to generally bisect said slider body in a direction from said first end to said second end;
- a magnetic coil, wherein said magnetic coil is coupled to said body; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed to be closer to said second end than said first end, at said corner, and offset from said central axis, and wherein said at least one optical element comprises an optical fiber.
- 8. The optical head as recited in claim 7, wherein said optical fiber comprises a polarization maintaining optical fiber.
- 9. An optical head for use in an optical path located between a source and a magneto-optical storage location, comprising:
- a slider body, wherein said slider body comprises a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end disposed along said periphery, a corner disposed at said second end, and a central axis, wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end, and wherein said central axis is disposed so as to generally bisect said slider body in a direction from said first end to said second end;
- a magnetic coil, wherein said magnetic coil is coupled to said body; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed to be closer to said second end than said first end, at said corner, and offset from said central axis, and wherein said at least one optical element comprises a steerable mirror.
- 10. The optical head as recited in claim 9, wherein said mirror comprises a micro-machined steerable mirror.
- 11. A magneto-optical system for transmission of a light along an optical path located between a source and at least one magneto-optical storage disk, comprising:
- at least one flying magneto-optical head, wherein said at least one flying magneto-optical head comprises a slider body, wherein said slider body comprises, a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end disposed along said periphery, and a central axis, wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end, wherein said central axis is disposed so as to generally bisect said slider body in a direction from said first end to said second end, and wherein said light passes from said source along said optical path in a direction from said first end to said second end; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed at said periphery; and wherein said at least one optical element is selected from a group consisting of a reflective substrate, an optical fiber, an objective element, and a quarter waveplate.
- 12. A magneto-optical system for transmission of a light along an optical path located between a source and at least one magneto-optical storage disk, comprising:
- at least one flying magneto-optical head, wherein said at least one flying magneto-optical head comprises:
- a slider body, wherein said slider body comprises, a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end disposed along said periphery, and a central axis, wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end, and wherein said central axis is disposed so as to generally bisect said slider body in a direction from said first end to said second end; and wherein said light passes from said source along said optical path in a direction from said first end to said second end; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed offset from said central axis, and wherein said at least one optical element is selected from a group consisting of a reflective substrate, an optical fiber, an objective element, and a quarter waveplate.
- 13. A magneto-optical head for directing a light beam using at least one component disposed between a magneto-optical storage medium, and a source, said optical head comprising:
- a slider body defined by a first edge, a second edge, an under surface, and an upper surface, and
- a plurality of channel patterns, wherein at least one of said channel patterns defines an optical path to said light beam, wherein at least one of said channel patterns accommodates and positions said at least one component within said body.
- 14. A magneto-optical head for directing a light beam using at least one component disposed between a magneto-optical storage medium, and a source, said optical head comprising:
- a slider body defined by a first edge, a second edge, an under surface, and an upper surface, and a channel pattern, said channel pattern formed for accommodating an positioning said at least one component within said body, wherein said at least one optical component comprises an optical fiber.
- 15. A magneto-optical head for transmission of light along an optical path located between a source and a storage location, comprising:
- a slider body, wherein said body comprises a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, and a second end disposed along said periphery, and wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed to be closer to said second end than said first end, and wherein said at least one optical element comprises a micro-machined steerable mirror.
- 16. A magneto-optical head for transmission of light along an optical path located between a source and a storage location, comprising:
- a slider body, wherein said body comprises a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, and a second end disposed along said periphery, and wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed to be closer to said second end than said first end, and wherein said at least one optical element comprises an optical fiber.
- 17. The magneto-optical head as recited in claim 16, wherein said optical fiber comprises a polarization maintaining optical fiber.
- 18. An optical head for use in an optical path located between a source and a magneto-optical storage location, comprising:
- a slider body, wherein said slider body comprises a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end disposed along said periphery, a corner disposed at said second end, and wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end;
- a magnetic coil, wherein said magnetic coil is coupled to said body; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed to be closer to said second end than said first end and at said corner, wherein said at least one optical element comprises a steerable mirror.
- 19. The optical-head as recited in claim 18, wherein said steerable mirror comprises a micro-machined steerable mirror.
- 20. An optical head for use in an optical path located between a source and a magneto-optical storage location, comprising:
- a slider body, wherein said slider body comprises a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end disposed along said periphery, a corner disposed at said second end, and wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end;
- a magnetic coil, wherein said magnetic coil is coupled to said body; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed to be closer to said second end than said first end and at said corner, wherein said at least one optical element comprises an optical fiber.
- 21. The optical-head as recited in claim 20, wherein said optical fiber comprises a polarization maintaining optical fiber.
- 22. An optical head for use in an optical path located between a source and a magneto-optical storage location, comprising:
- a slider body, wherein said slider body comprises a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, and a second end disposed along said periphery, wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end, and wherein a light passes from said source along said optical path in a direction from said first end to said second end;
- a magnetic coil, wherein said magnetic coil is coupled to said body; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed to be closer to said second end than said first end, and wherein said at least one optical element comprises an optical fiber.
- 23. The head as recited in claim 22, wherein said optical fiber comprises a polarization maintaining optical fiber.
- 24. An optical head for use in an optical path located between a source and a magneto-optical storage location, comprising:
- a slider body, wherein said slider body comprises a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end disposed along said periphery, a corner disposed at said second end, and a central axis, wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end, and wherein said central axis is disposed so as to generally bisect said slider body in a direction from said first end to said second end;
- a magnetic coil, wherein said magnetic coil is coupled to said body; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed to be closer to said second end than said first end, at said corner, and offset from said central axis, and wherein said at least one optical element comprises an optical fiber.
- 25. The head as recited in claim 24, wherein said optical fiber comprises a polarization-maintaining optical fiber.
- 26. A magneto-optical system for transmission of a light along an optical path located between a source and at least one magneto-optical storage disk, comprising:
- at least one flying magneto-optical head, wherein said at least one flying magneto-optical head comprises:
- a slider body, wherein said slider body comprises a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end disposed along said periphery, and a central axis, wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end, wherein said central axis is disposed so as to bisect said slider body in a direction from said first end to said second end, and wherein said light passes from said source along said optical path in a direction from said first end to said second end; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed at said periphery of said body, and wherein said at least one optical element comprises a polarization maintaining optical fiber.
- 27. A magneto-optical system for transmission of a light along an optical path located between a source and at least one magneto-optical storage disk, comprising:
- at least one flying magneto-optical head, wherein said at least one flying magneto-optical head comprises:
- a slider body, wherein said slider body comprises a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end disposed along said periphery, and a central axis, wherein said first end is disposed opposite said second end, wherein said central axis is disposed so as to generally bisect said slider body in a direction from said first end to said second end, and wherein said light passes from said source along said optical path in a direction from said first end to said second end; and
- at least one optical element for directing said light, wherein said at least one optical element is coupled to said body and aligned in said optical path, wherein said at least one optical element is disposed offset from said central axis, and wherein said at least one optical element comprises a polarization maintaining optical fiber.
- 28. A method for delivering a light along an optical path located between a source and a magneto-optical storage location, comprising the steps of:
- providing a flying magneto-optical head, said flying magneto-optical comprising a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end disposed along said periphery, a corner disposed at said second end, and a central axis wherein said first end is opposite said second end, wherein said central axis is disposed so as to generally bisect said flying magneto-optical head in a direction from said first end to said second end; and
- directing said light to said storage location using a micro-machined steerable mirror disposed at a location on said flying magneto-optical head that is closer to said second end than said first end.
- 29. A method for delivering a light along an optical path located between a source and a magneto-optical storage location, comprising the steps of:
- providing a flying magneto-optical head, said flying magneto-optical comprising a periphery, a first end disposed along said periphery, a second end disposed along said periphery, a corner disposed at said second end, and a central axis wherein said first end is opposite said second end, wherein said central axis is disposed so as to generally bisect said flying magneto-optical head in a direction from said first end to said second end; and
- directing said light to said storage location using a polarization maintaining optical fiber disposed at a location on said flying magneto-optical head that is closer to said second end than said first end.
