Claims
- 1. In an apparatus for severing successive longitudinal sections from continuously moving elongated work having a cutting tool movable in a circular path and means for guiding the work in a normal path spaced a short distance from such circular path, the improvement which comprises an eccentric unit having a cam wheel mounted for rotation on a light-weight vertically movable frame and having a pair of parallel eccentric shafts extending through said frame at opposite sides of said cam wheel, a supporting frame having bearing means mounting said shafts for rotation about parallel axes, a pair of blocks having openings to receive said shafts, each shaft having an eccentric portion mounted for rotation in its associated block to cause oscillation of the block in response to rotation of the shaft, means mounting said blocks for horizontal sliding movement on said movable frame, and means mounting said movable frame for vertical movement, whereby the sliding blocks cause the frame to reciprocate vertically in response to rotation of said eccentric shafts, and cause the cam wheel to deflect the work from its normal path into the path of the tool to permit severing of said sections.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 in which said movable frame comprises a generally rectangular sheet metal housing having vertical end walls, and a plurality of guide means are provided on said supporting frame adjacent said end walls to guide the movable frame in a vertical direction.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 in which said housing has vertical sheet metal side walls and horizontal plates mounted thereon for slidably engaging the upper and lower surfaces of said sliding blocks.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1 in which means are provided for pivotally supporting one end of said supporting frame and means are provided for raising and lowering the opposite end of said frame between a retracted position wherein the work remains out of the path of the tool throughout the rotation of the eccentric shafts and a normal position wherein the work is periodically deflected into the path of the tool.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 4 in which said means for raising and lowering the frame comprises toggle means for supporting said opposite end of said frame and reversible motor means for operating said toggle means.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 in which yieldable means are provided for cushioning downward movement of said supporting frame when it is moved to said retracted position.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 4 in which a reversible pneumatic cylinder is provied to raise and lower said opposite end of said frame.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 4 in which said supporting frame comprises parallel longitudinal plates at opposite sides of said movable frame, each having a pair of rollers at opposite ends of said movable frame, said movable frame having four vertical end plates engaging said rollers, whereby the movable frame can move only in a vertical direction.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1 in which said movable frame comprises an elongated generally rectangular sheet metal housing having a width several times its height, said supporting frame comprises a pair of elongated longitudinal plates at opposite sides of said housing and parallel thereto, said plates being pivotally supported at one end to swing about an axis parallel to the axis of said eccentric shafts and being supported at the opposite end by toggle means comprising a pair of toggle levers, bearing means at the top of each of said plates for supporting both of said eccentric shafts for rotation about horizontal axes, rollers on each of said plates for engaging the opposite ends of said housing to guide it vertically and yieldable spring means for each of said plates located near the movable end of the plate for cushioning downward swinging movement thereof.
