- 7. The combination of claim 1, wherein the annular gasket and annular support are cast in the wall defining an opening.
- 8. The combination of claim 1, wherein the projection for anchoring the base within the wall comprises at least one anchoring projection which extends from the base.
- 9. The combination of claim 1, wherein the annular base of the gasket has a plurality of anchoring projections extending therefrom.
- 10. The combination of claim 9, wherein the annular base of the gasket has a width which is substantially equal to the depth of the opening in the wall.
- 11. A concrete manhole structure, comprising:
- a wall defining an annular opening through which a pipe can pass so that a joint is defined between the wall and the pipe;
- a annular gasket positioned within the annular opening and including:
- an annular base,
- a projection for anchoring the base within the wall so that the annular base lies adjacent the wall,
- an annular first web,
- an annular second web intermediate the base and the first web, the first web being coupled to the second web and the second web being coupled to the base so that the first and second webs are movable between a folded position adjacent one another and an unfolded position in which the first and second webs form a sleeve around an outer surface of the pipe; and
- an annular support, the annular support being positioned within the annular gasket and compressing the annular gasket radially outward, the annular support comprising a helical strip which can be stripped apart to remove the annular support from within the annular gasket.
- 12. The concrete manhole structure of claim 11, wherein the helical strip of the annular support is defined by perforations, scored lines, notches, or grooves formed in the annular support.
- 13. The concrete manhole structure of claim 11, wherein the first web is integral with the second web and the second web is integral with the base.
- 14. The concrete manhole structure of claim 11, wherein the first web is laterally adjacent the second web when compressed by the annular support and the second web is laterally adjacent the base and first web when compressed by the annular support.
- 15. The concrete manhole structure of claim 11, further comprising an abutment on the first web for retaining a clamp on the sleeve.
- 16. The concrete manhole structure of claim 15, wherein the abutment includes a bead adjacent a free end of the first web.
- 17. The concrete manhole structure of claim 11, wherein the annular gasket and annular support are cast in the wall.
- 18. The concrete manhole structure of claim 11, wherein the projection for anchoring the base within the wall comprises at least one anchoring projection which extends from the base.
- 19. A method of sealing a joint between a wall defining an annular opening in a first member and an annular outer surface of a second member, comprising:
- providing a folded annular gasket in the annular opening;
- providing an annular support within the folded annular gasket, the annular support causing radial outward compression of the annular gasket;
- inserting the second member in the annular support; and
- removing the annular support so that the annular gasket provides a seal between the annular opening and the second member.
- 20. The method of claim 19, wherein the annular support comprises a helical strip that can be stripped apart, and the method comprises removing the annular support by pulling the helical strip apart.
- 21. The method of claim 20, wherein pulling the helical strip causes the annular gasket to become inverted.
- 22. The method of claim 21, further comprising clamping an end of the inverted gasket to the second member.
- 23. The method of claim 22, wherein the annular gasket is provided with an abutment to prevent lateral movement of a clamp.
- 24. The method of claim 21, wherein the annular gasket becomes inverted before the annular support is removed.
- 25. The method of claim 21, wherein the annular gasket inverts as the annular support is removed.
- 26. The method of claim 21, wherein the first member is a manhole and the second member is a pipe.
- 27. In a sealable joint between an opening in a wall and a pipe which includes an annular gasket between the opening and the pipe, the improvement comprising:
- a folded annular gasket; and
- a strippable annular support for receiving a pipe therethrough, for compressing the folded annular gasket radially outward so that the pipe can be inserted into the folded annular gasket as the pipe is received in the annular support, and for unfolding the folded annular gasket.
- 28. The sealable joint of claim 27, wherein the annular support further inverts the folded gasket to invert from its folded position.
- 29. The sealable joint of claim 27, wherein the annular support includes a helical strip that can be stripped apart to remove the annular support from within the annular gasket.
- 30. The sealable joint of claim 28, wherein the annular support includes a helical strip that can be stripped apart to remove the annular support from within the annular gasket.
