Claims
- 1. A method of treatment of a vertebrate animal so as to increase the secretion of FSH therein, which method comprises administering an effective amount of a protein which is a dimer of two polypeptide subunits linked together by disulfide bonding, each subunit having a formula selected from the formulae (a) ##STR5## or a naturally-occurring mammalian homolog thereof, and (b) ##STR6## wherein R.sub.26 is Ser or Asn, or a naturally-occurring mammalian homolog thereof.
- 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein both of said subunits of said protein have the formula: ##STR7##
- 3. A method according to claim 1 wherein both of said subunits of said protein have the formula: ##STR8## wherein R.sub.26 is Ser or Asn.
- 4. A method of treatment according to claim 1 wherein said protein is a heterodimer in which one subunit has the formula: ##STR9## and the other subunit has the formula: ##STR10##
- 5. A method of treatment according to claim 1 wherein R.sub.26 is Ser.
- 6. A method of treatment according to claim 3 wherein R.sub.26 is Ser.
- 7. A method of treatment according to claim 4 wherein R.sub.26 is Ser.
- 8. A method of treatment according to claim 1 wherein R.sub.26 is Asn.
- 9. A method of treatment according to claim 3 wherein R.sub.26 is Asn.
- 10. A method of treatment according to claim 4 wherein R.sub.26 is Asn.
- 11. A pharmaceutical composition which comprises a pharmaceutically-acceptable carrier plus an amount, effective to cause an increase in fertility in a male or female vertebrate animal, of a substantially pure protein which is a homodimer or a heterodimer of two polypeptide subunits linked together by disulfide bonding, each subunit having a formula selected from the formulae: ##STR11##
- 12. A pharmaceutical composition in accordance with claim 11 wherein said protein is a homodimer of two subunits having the same formula.
- 13. A pharmaceutical composition in accordance with claim 11 wherein said protein is a heterodimer wherein one subunit has the formula: (a) ##STR12## ##STR13## wherein R.sub.26 is Ser or Asn.
- 14. A pharmaceutical composition in accordance with claim 11 wherein R.sub.26 is Ser.
- 15. A pharmaceutical composition in accordance with claim 13 wherein R.sub.26 is Ser.
- 16. A pharmaceutical composition in accordance with claim 1 wherein R.sub.26 is Asn.
- 17. A pharmaceutical composition in accordance with claim 13 wherein R.sub.26 is Asn.
- 18. A pharmaceutical composition in accordance with claim 12 wherein both of said subunits of said protein have the formula: ##STR14##
- 19. A pharmaceutical composition in accordance with claim 12 wherein both of said subunits of said protein have the formula: ##STR15##
