Claims
- 1. A sealing ring for a fuel injector mounting arrangement in which a fuel injector is mounted for direct injection into a combustion chamber, said ring comprising a first layer of heat insulating material, a second outer layer of a thermally activatable material.
- 2. The ring of claim 1, wherein said heat insulating material is asbestos.
- 3. The ring of claim 1, wherein said thermally activatable material is a thermal set plastic.
- 4. The ring of claim 1, wherein said thermally activatable material comprises resin.
- 5. The ring of claim 1, wherein said second layer substantially encases said first layer.
- 6. The ring of claim 1 further comprising an aperture extending through said sealing ring and an eyelet extending through said aperture.
- 7. The ring of claim 6, wherein said eyelet is made of a malleable material.
- 8. The ring of claim 6, wherein said eyelet is asymmetrical such that said eyelet covers a greater portion of a first side of said ring than a second side of said ring.
- 9. The ring of claim 6, wherein said eyelet is made of a metal.
- 10. The ring of claim 6, wherein said eyelet has a radius surface extending between a first side of said ring and a second side of said ring.
- 11. A method of sealing a fuel injector within a cylinder head of an engine, said method comprising placing at least one sealing ring into a mounting bore of said cylinder head, positioning a fuel injector through said sealing ring, applying a compressive force to secure said fuel injector in position within said mounting bore, and heating said cylinder head to melt a component of said ring.
- 12. The method of claim 11, wherein said sealing ring is placed into said mounting bore after said fuel injector is positioned through said sealing ring.
- 13. The method of claim 11, wherein said compressive force is applied while said fuel injector is being clamped in position on said cylinder head.
- 14. The method of claim 11, wherein said compressive force deforms a portion of said ring into engagement with a portion of said fuel injector.
- 15. The method of claim 14, wherein said portion of said ring comprises an eyelet.
- 16. The method of claim 11 further comprising mounting a cap to said fuel injector and placing said cap in said mounting bore.
- 17. The method of claim 16, wherein said cap is placed in said mounting bore before said cap is mounted to said fuel injector.
- 18. The method of claim 11 further comprising fusing said sealing ring to a second sealing ring.
- 19. The method of claim 11, wherein said cylinder head is heated by operating said engine.
